Persona 5 Gacha Players Review Bomb The Game After Accelerated Schedule Comes With Worse Rewards

When it was announced that Persona 5: The Phantom X would be accelerating its story content rollout for the West to catch up to China, which has had the game for over a year, players were wary. As a gacha game with timed events and currency, The Phantom X is a game in which narrative developments and their associated rewards come and go, and that means if you can't get around to playing it for some time, you might miss out on something big. Western players wondered if they might be getting a lesser experience than the original Chinese audience until they were caught up, and while it remains to be seen just how much this new accelerated story will affect things, fans are already noticing they're getting smaller rewards on this faster timeline than The Phantom X's original run. As reported by GamesRadar+, The Phantom X players have been comparing the rewards for the worldwide release with those of the original Chinese one, and while in some cases the western audience is receiving more rewards comparatively (North American players get more character materials in the battle pass, for example), broadly, it appears that the spoils players earn by playing have been nerfed from what they were for Chinese players a year ago. You can read the full breakdown in a shared document that goes through each change. If you're not playing The Phantom X and don't know what all these currencies and points mean, all you really need to know is that these changes will require more grinding and time investment over the course of the game, or for players to make up for that by spending real money. With The Phantom X now being on an accelerated story roadmap, it all amounts to western players having to work with fewer resources and less time. A lot of free-to-play live-service games bank on players feeling a sense of urgency to play and sometimes pay money to not fall behind, but fans argue that these factors make The Phantom X feel unfair, and that western players are 'getting treated like trash.' As such, swaths of players have review-bombed the game on Google Play, where its user rating sits at a low 1.9/5 stars, with its one-star reviews eclipsing all other scores combined. 'Honestly, this is a really fun game so far,' one Google Play review reads. 'But the current greed and lack of compensation while speeding up updates and banners to catch up with the other versions will run the global version of this game into the ground, very, very quickly. I personally wouldn't invest too much if things don't change, cause in a few more updates it might just be time to jump ship.' We've reached out to Atlus for comment on the situation and will update the story if we hear the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Best new mobile games on iOS and Android – July 2025 round-up

July is a bumper month for smartphone games, including the all-new Persona 5: The Phantom X for iOS and Android. Although the summer months are traditionally a period when video game release schedules enter their version of hibernation, on mobile things are still bustling. Supercell in particular have been busy, with a major update for the ailing Boom Beach and an even bigger one for Clash Royale; that adds a new turn-based auto battler game mode based on Clash Mini, a game the developer abandoned last year following a multi-country test launch. Also out this month is the English subtitled version of Persona 5: The Phantom X, which is far from ruined by the addition of light gacha mechanics; the Apple Arcade version of Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance TD; and a fresh outing in the excellent Meteorfall deck builder series, Rustbowl Rumble. iOS, free – full game £4.99 (SMG Studios) Marooning you light years from Earth, No Way Home is a twin stick shooter with role-playing elements, blending exploration and shooting with an addictive drip feed of upgrades for your ship, each of which looks, sounds, and feels satisfyingly consequential. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Appropriately for a game focused on shooting, weapons handling and the feel of piloting your ship are refined and responsive, working perfectly on touchscreen and obviating the need for a Bluetooth controller. Although the majority of missions boil down to flying somewhere and shooting up a bunch of aliens, the wry script and voice acting help provide a solid distraction, in this polished and hugely entertaining mobile port, that was previously only available to Apple Arcade subscribers. Score: 8/10 iOS, free – full game £6.99 (Luke Muscat) Borrowing some of its mechanics from the relatively little known Ocean Keeper: Dome Survival, Feed The Deep has you diving into darkened, procedurally generated 2D cave systems in search of a giant beast, and a morsel to drop into its maw. To do that you'll need to power up your diver, boosting oxygen tanks, swimming speed, and the ability to drag heavier loads of treasure to the surface with you, using bombs to blast new paths through the subterranean water-filled maze. With a gradually escalating sense of difficulty and complexity, the sense of progression, as you tease the secrets out of each labyrinth while making sure you don't accidentally drown or get eaten by squid-like monsters, proves compelling. Score: 8/10 iOS & Android, free (Sega) Already out in open beta for a year in Asia, The Phantom X worldwide release retains the original Japanese voice acting, but now features well translated English subtitles, in a game that retains the style and gameplay of the long running Persona franchise. It effortlessly blends mundane secondary school shenanigans with more fantastical goings on, while maintaining the series' mechanically involved turn-based combat, albeit adding gacha microtransactions, which for once feels relatively inoffensive. The only time its monetisation gets in the way is deliberate level gating that forces you either to pay or endure days of relatively uninspiring grind, a process that's additionally hampered by the slowly regenerating stamina that governs whether you can collect rewards at the end of levels. Still, if you love Persona, this supplies a new set of interesting characters and successfully translates the flair of Persona 5 into a portable format, although it also features cross-save functionality with the PC version. Score: 7/10 iOS & Android, free trial – full game £9.99 (Noodlecake) Originally released on PC nearly a decade ago, the wonderfully named Ultimate Chicken Horse is an absurdist party game for two to four players. Starting on the left of the screen, each player grabs a prop, which could be a door, a platform, a deadly spiked ball, or any number of other comedy objects, to position it on the screen. The aim is to collaborate in building a path to the goal on the right of the screen, while making it as hard as possible for other players to get there with you. Its fast-paced gameplay and cute hand-animated art style emphasise the humour, but playing against online opponents removes the fun and banter of same-screen couch multiplayer. Although local play is possible, all of you will need to buy the game, cranking the cost up to untenable levels. It's a great game but one that's not well suited to mobile. Score: 6/10 iOS, included with Apple Arcade subscription (Ironhide Studios) Ironhide Studios' Kingdom Rush series is the unchallenged king of tower defence games, letting you build and upgrade turrets while also commanding heroes, spells, and support troops that you can guide individually around the battlefield. Outside battle you'll be selecting buffs and new skills for your heroes and towers, and purchasing consumables to get you out of any especially tight spots you might encounter. The only thing that used to rankle about Kingdom Rush: Alliance TD was its insistence on trying to flog you add-ons – including heroes that would otherwise be inaccessible – even though it was already a paid-for game. The Apple Arcade version naturally nixes all that, instantly making it the definite version of the game. Score: 8/10 iOS & Android, £6.99 (Slothwerks) More Trending Rustbowl Rumble is the latest deck builder to emerge in the gradually expanding Meteorfall franchise. Like its predecessors, this is a turn-based card battler, but this time fights involve up to four pugilists on each team. As well as paying careful attention to the turn order, to make sure your attacks, defences, and healing occur in time to be useful, there are also wild cards that change the rules for a single turn, and feats demanded by the crowd, which can bring fairly hefty bonuses if you manage to complete them. There's such a huge range of combinations of brawlers, perks, attacks, status effects, and buffs that you'll keep discovering new approaches to even after many hours of play. A genuinely deep and complex mobile strategy game, with pleasing handcrafted visuals. Score: 8/10 Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Ann Takamaki in Persona 5 The Phantom X: Best weapons, teams, skill priority, and more

(Image via Sega) Ann Takamaki in Persona 5: The Phantom X gameplay is the fiery-hearted Panther who is a fan-favourite. The Phantom Thief is the powerhouse that specializes in devastating fire attacks. With her Carmen Persona, she dominates the battles with some high-damage AoE skills and also burns effects. Veterans and new players alike can harness her potential. Understanding her optimal gear, skill progression, and team synergies is key to dominating Metaverse. Let us dive within building Ann for maximum impact. Best weapons for Ann Takamaki to ignite the battlefield Ann thrives with her fire-boosting weapons, which can enhance her damage output. To equip her right would amplify her strength quite immensely. Her top choice remains 5-star Rosethorn, which can increase fire damage by approximately 24.2%, and she inflicts burn on enemies, too. If La Vie En Rose remains active, fire damage will escalate further as per the burning foes, capping at a max 76% boost. Note: Rosethorn weapon remains accessible early through the Plans tab. It can synergize with her unique mechanics perfectly. For a much more accessible option, the 4-star Masquerade Ribbon of Ann would also raise her attack by 12% and add approximately 23.7% to it when attacking the burning enemies. As Rosethorn remains obtainable early via in-game rewards, it is the preferred pick to maximize her firepower. Complementing the armament is the Strife Revelation Card Set. It can be found in the Words of Feuds domain challenge. The set is tailor-made just for Ann, the Panther, and delivers bonus fire damage and additional attack boost when exploiting the enemy's weaknesses. Give priority to stats like Damage% (Moon), Attack% (Sky), and Crit Rate (Star) on the cards. The combination would ensure her spell would hit with an overwhelming force, melting all enemy defenses. Ann Takamaki's team tactics and skill focus Building around Panther would mean embracing a mono-fire team to achieve peak efficiency. The core lineup here would pair her with Cattle and Key, who have proven to be exceptionally potent. The trio would leverage the fire synergies and enhance team cohesion and damage output. ANNS FLAMES ARE STILL BURNING! UNIT REVISIT! | PERSONA 5: THE PHANTOM X Players who seek more explosive results can swap Cattle with Leon and create a hypercarry setup. It would definitely sacrifice some sustainability but would push Ann's damage ceiling dramatically high. Some Personas of Wonder, like Dionysus (Crit Rate/Damage) or Surt (Defense Down), can further amplify the offensive pressure of the team. To master, Ann needs strategic skill upgrades. Her Persona, Carmen, even offers some potent fire abilities. Ensure priority is given to enhancing Trifire (Skill 3) at first. The potent and single-target burn skill will become more devastating against the weakened foes. Then focus on Skill 1, Crimson Rose. It is Ann's powerful AoE attack that even buffs her own strength. The Thief Tactics would follow, as the Highlight attack can deliver some massive AoE fire damage and offer crucial short-term damage buff. Skill 2, Falling Sun, while it remains useful, rounds out the priority list here. Unlock Ann Takamaki's full potential The unique Passion mechanic and La Vie en Rose (LVR) state of Ann state remain central to her kit. To deal fire damage can build Passion stacks. At 4 stacks, she can enter LVR, quite significantly giving a boost to her attack. To understand the rhythm remains vital. Her awareness level can unlock power enhancements, including party-wide attack buffs during the LVR, some potent follow-up attacks, as it would end, and some substantial damage increase per Passion stack. While the passive boosts come from the duplicates, they do solidify her position as the top fire unit. Ann, in short, is the cornerstone character. To obtain it is quite straightforward, but building her effectively can unlock the path of destruction through mid- and early-game. Also, to equip Rosethorn, use the Strife set and pair Ann with Key and Cattle while giving priority to Trifire and Crimson Rose upgrades; the players could unleash the character's full and fiery fury on any foe who dares to stand within the way of Phantom Thieves. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
