Karthik Subbaraj admits Suriya's 'Retro' carried the responsibility of featuring a big star; plans to make a small-budget indie film

Karthik about next movie Varun, Mrunal & Pooja Turn Heads at London Retro Screening Creative aspects of 'Retro' About Suriya's 'Retro' Director Karthik Subbaraj recently collaborated with Suriya for the action thriller 'Retro', which hit theatres on May 1 to lukewarm responses. Although the film was one of the most anticipated in Kollywood following Suriya's setback with 'Kanguva', many audience members and critics were left disappointed. Amidst the underwhelming reception, Karthik has spoken about the pressure of casting a leading star in a known for his realistic and raw storytelling in films like 'Petta' and 'Jigarthanda Double X', revealed that he is ready to return to his roots with an independent film that has long been in the pipeline. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he shared that his next venture could depart from mainstream cinema.'After Jigarthanda Double X, I wanted to make an indie film—just make it and send it to festivals. Maybe after a year, it will release in theatres. I've had that script ready for a long time. But then Retro happened. Now I think I should do that,' he further explained that independent cinema offers a different kind of creative freedom, which was limited in 'Retro' due to Suriya's stardom. 'Retro is also told in my way, but it comes with the responsibility of a big budget and a big star. That indie film doesn't need known artistes or stars. It's a small-budget story I've wanted to make for a long time,' he recently praised Karthik's Retro. The film was initially planned with Rajinikanth before the lead role went to Suriya.'Retro' also featured Pooja Hegde , Joju George, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, and Vidhu in key roles. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film has managed to earn over Rs 80 crore globally.

Talking about his reasons for making an indie film, he said, "Retro is also told in my way, but it comes with the responsibility of a big budget and a big star. Karthik Subbaraj reveals Rajnikanth watched Suriya-starrer Retro: ‘Suriya's performance was super'

Director Karthik Subbaraj took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday to share that 'Superstar' Rajinikanth had watched his latest film Retro — and loved it. The Suriya starrer has received a decent reception from fans and critics. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has collected Rs 48.16 crore in India after 6 days. The post by Karthik read, 'Thalaivar watched Retro, and he loved it. Exact words of Thalaivar: 'What an effort by the whole team. Suriya's performance was super. Last 40 minutes of the film were superb… Laughter touch is fantastic…. God bless. 'Am flying now, love you, Thalaivaaa.' Rajnikanth has worked with Karthik on Petta (2019). In an interview with Galatta Plus before the release of Retro, Karthik Subbaraj dropped a bombshell by revealing that the film was originally pitched to Rajinikanth. He said, 'I wrote it for Thalaivar (Rajinikanth). Since it was written with him (Rajinikanth) in mind, the initial script was filled with a lot of action and mass elements. However, working on it further, I realised there was a strong love story there.' After the script became a love story at its core, Karthik decided to approach Suriya for Retro, and once he gave the go-ahead, certain changes were made to the protagonist's characterisation. 'When Suriya sir read the first draft, he immediately asked me if I'd written it for Rajini sir. Later, we made the protagonist even more vulnerable. However, let me assure you that it doesn't mean the character will not have mass moments or heroism-filled action sequences.' Retro also stars Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Joju George, and Karunakaran. The movie had a strong opening day, earning Rs 19 crore, but its daily collections have been declining since. The weekend numbers were also underwhelming, with the film managing only Rs 16 crore over Saturday and Sunday combined. It seems that Rajnikanth's positive words couldn't have come at a better time for both Karthik and Suriya.
