Braves Projected to Trade $111 Million All-Star After Chris Sale News

Braves Projected to Trade $111 Million All-Star After Chris Sale News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As has often been the case over the last two seasons, the dynamic Atlanta Braves duo of Marcell Ozuna and Chris Sale struck again on Thursday night. Advertisement Ozuna went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored in Atlanta's 9-3 victory over the rival Philadelphia Phillies. Sale, meanwhile, became the fastest pitcher in MLB history to 2,500 strikeouts with a sixth-inning punchout of Phillies third baseman Edmundo Sosa. If things keep at their current rate, though, the two may not be teammates much longer. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller listed Ozuna among those that the 26-29 Braves could trade this summer, assuming they wave the white flag and pivot to 2026. Ozuna, who turns 35 in November, remains an appealing DH target despite diminished power numbers. The three-time All-Star entered Wednesday hitting .278 with a stellar .428 on-base percentage; only New York Yankees star Aaron Judge (.488) and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith (.457) rank higher. Atlanta Braves designated hitter Marcell OzunaJayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Perhaps more importantly, Ozuna is in the final season of a five-year, $80 million contract. What sounds better than a rental bat who still reaches base at an exceptional pace? Advertisement However, Ozuna only has nine homers through 52 games and is on pace for his fewest home runs since 2022. Ozuna averaged a .552 slugging percentage the last two seasons, though he's only mustered a .464 mark thus far. Any team that would potentially acquire Ozuna, who leads the sport with 47 walks, is doing so knowing he'll likely almost exclusively be the DH. Ozuna has played only 14 outfield innings since the start of 2023, and none in the last two years. We'll see how many more times Sale and Ozuna can lead the Braves to victory, especially with Atlanta now 5.5 games back in the Wild Card chase. Advertisement Yelich is batting .233 this season with a team-leading 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. He had four hits in Saturday's 17-7 win over the Phillies and homered twice Friday night. Brewers LHP Jose Quintana returns from IL to start vs. Phillies

June 1 - The Milwaukee Brewers reinstated left-hander Jose Quintana from the 15-day injured list on Sunday to start the series finale against the host Philadelphia Phillies. Quintana was placed on the injured list with a shoulder impingement on May 14. He last pitched on May 9, allowing three runs (one earned) and five hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 4-3 road loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Brewers signed Quintana as a free agent on March 5, and he's delivered for them. He's 4-1 with a 2.65 ERA in six starts and has given up 12 runs (10 earned) in 34 innings. Quintana, 36, spent last season with the New York Mets, finishing 10-10 with a 3.75 ERA in 170 1/3 innings. In his career, which began in 2012 with the Chicago White Sox, he is 106-104 with a 3.72 ERA with eight teams. Quintana has made 12 starts against the Phillies in his career and is 1-2 with a 3.53 ERA in 66 1/3 innings. Also Sunday, the Brewers designated left-hander Tyler Alexander for assignment. Alexander, 30, posted a 3-5 record with a 6.19 ERA in 21 appearances (four starts) this season. He is 20-33 with a 4.67 ERA in 164 career appearances (56 starts) with the Detroit Tigers, Rays and Brewers. --Field Level Media

Phillies Make Surprise Kyle Schwarber Move After Bryce Harper Injury Update

The Philadelphia Phillies won their recent series with the rival Atlanta Braves, but the victory came with a significant loss as well. In the first inning of the first game, superstar slugger Bryce Harper was struck by a pitch from Spencer Strider in his surgically repaired elbow. He was immediately removed from the game and, while he told reporters he's hopeful he can avoid a trip to the injured list, the Phillies are preparing for an extended absence. "Since Harper has been out, Alec Bohm has seen the bulk of the innings at first base," according to Lochland March of The Philadelphia Inquirer. "But Kyle Schwarber also got some extra infield work taking grounders pregame on Friday." While Bohm has been the go-to substitute at first base for Harper, the move to give Schwarber more reps there is a bigger surprise. He hasn't started a game at that position since 2021 and has only played 11 games there in his 11-year Major League Baseball career. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)The Phillies should also be wary about making any changes that could throw off Schwarber's approach at the plate. He has been the best hitter on the team so far this year, slugging .578 with 19 homers. But the team seems unsure of the next steps for Harper, forcing the surprise decision to consider Schwarber as a defensive replacement. "I think he's ramped it up a little bit, just because of the Harper situation," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said of Schwarber's first base reps, per March. "We don't really know where we're at with that." As Harper works his way back from the scary hit, the Phillies still have reason to hope Schwarber won't need to fill in before he comes back.
