Torre vs. Baste: PNP chief accepts acting Davao mayor's fistfight challenge
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III on Wednesday accepted the challenge of Davao City Acting Mayor Baste Duterte for a fistfight. Torre said this could be in the form of a "charity boxing match." 'Ang una kong naisip, uy tamang-tama. Maraming kababayan natin ngayon ang nangangailangan ng tulong na naapektuhan ng bagyo at baha. Maybe, this is a very good time para sa isang charity boxing match,' Torre told reporters. (My first thought was, oh, that's good timing. Many of our countrymen are in need of help right now after being affected by the cyclone and floods. Maybe this is a very good time for a charity boxing match.) 'We can do it on Sunday sa Araneta. Actually, puwede. Seriously, it's okay. Maganda yan charity at least makatulong kami ni Mayor Baste sa ating mga kababayang nasalanta yung proceed kung ano man. Sigurado maraming manonood nyan,' he added. (We can do it on Sunday at Araneta. Actually, we can. Seriously, it's okay. That's a good charity and at least Mayor Baste and I can help our countrymen who were affected by the storm in some way. I'm sure there will be many people watching.) In a vlog uploaded on Youtube on Sunday, Duterte mentioned Torre and challenged him for a fistfight. 'Kasi matapang ka lang naman you have the position. Pero kung suntukan tayo alam kong makaya kita. But then you're a coward,' Duterte said. (You're brave because you have the position. But if we fight, I know I can handle you. But then you're a coward.) —VAL, GMA Integrated News

PNP arrests Chinese national for murder
The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday announced the arrest of a Chinese national who is accused of killing an individual in Makati in 2024. PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre said the individual was arrested on July 19 in Tawi-Tawi after returning to the Philippines. 'Ayon sa ating intelligence, natanggap natin na siya ay babalik sa bansa sa pamamagitan ng southern backdoor, ang ruta na pinaghihinalaan natin na ginamit niya sa pag takas,' Torre said in a media briefing. (According to our intelligence, we received information that he will return to the country through the southern backdoor, the route we suspect he used to escape.) According to Torre, the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 59 issued the arrest warrant against the suspect. He said the individual was charged for kidnapping a Chinese acupuncturist in 2022 in Manila. However, he said the case was dismissed. 'Hindi ligtas ang Pilipinas sa mga kriminal na nagtatago rito o gumagawa ng krimen at tatakas papunta sa ibang bansa. Hindi tayo magpapabaya at hindi natin kinokonsinte ang mga sindikatong ito na nang bibiktima ng mga banyaga at nag sasagawa ng krimen dito man o sa ibang bansa,' he said. (The Philippines is not a safe haven for criminals who are hiding here or committing crimes and then fleeing to other countries. We will not be negligent and we do not tolerate these syndicates that victimize foreigners and commit crimes either here or abroad.) Travel warning Meanwhile, Torre slammed as "baseless," China's travel warning urging Chinese students who are considering to enroll in Philippine schools. The Chinese Ministry of Education advisory warned that the "security situation in the Philippines has been unstable recently, with a surge in crimes targeting Chinese nationals." 'At the end of the day nakita niyo naman sa ngayon, maraming propaganda, maraming ang lalabasan mga statements designed to shape a narrative,' Torre said. (At the end of the day you've seen it now, there's a lot of propaganda, many statements will come out that are designed to shape a narrative.) Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs has also protested the warning, saying it "mischaracterizes the situation in the Philippines." —VAL, GMA Integrated News

PNP says case of body found in Cavite already resolved
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III on Monday clarified that the case of the Chinese victim who was found in Cavite has already been resolved. According to Torre, the incident took place in 2022. The victim is a 32-year-old Chinese fugitive who was issued a red notice by the International Criminal Police Organization. He said that the victim is now buried at a public cemetery after his family refused to cooperate with authorities. Torre, meanwhile, slammed critics of the government for digging up the issue. 'Hinuhukay, literal na hinukay sa baul para palabasin lang na para bang bago kasi wala na silang nakitang masama ngayon na kasing sama nu'ng panahon nila,' he said in a briefing. (They're digging up, literally digging from the chest, just to make it seem like it's something new because they can't find anything now that's as bad as what happened during their time.) —KG, GMA Integrated News
