Weather Fact Wednesday: The Science Of Atmospheric Rivers
Everyone knows what a river is, but do you know about the concept of an atmospheric river? The majority of water vapor outside of the tropics is transported via atmospheric rivers, which are comparatively long, narrow areas in the atmosphere that resemble rivers in the sky. Since they are vital to the Earth's climate because they control a majority of the moisture flow from the tropics to the poles, they then have a hugh impact on sea ice, air temperatures, and other climate-related variables, since they have an effect in the growth of clouds. Not all atmospheric rivers are harmful though, as the majority are weak systems that often generate beneficial rain or snow that is necessary for the water supply. Unfortunately, the good also brings with it the bad. For instance, the commonly recognized 'Pineapple Express,' which can carry precipitation from Hawaii to the US West Coast, may bring about mudslides, gridlocked roads, and significant property and personal damage. Like hurricanes, atmospheric rivers are rated, but unlike hurricanes, their ratings take into account the possibility that they may also be helpful. Category 1 (weakest) to Category 5 (outstanding) are the ratings' ranges. Thus, the issue arises: do atmospheric rivers have an effect on D.C. and the surrounding area? Indeed, as atmospheric rivers have affected Washington, D.C. even though most are associated with the West Coast. One recent example was the atmospheric river that created flooding and a lot of rain earlier in May of 2025 along the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Dave Franco brought a 'great vibe' to The Studio, says Seth Rogen
Seth Rogen wrote 'The Studio' with Dave Franco "specifically" in mind for a role. The 39-year-old actor plays a fictionalised version of himself in the TV comedy series, and Seth has revealed that he relished working with his long-time friend. Seth, 43 - who co-created the show - told People: "Honestly, there were very few people that could have filled the roles that the people had filled because we really specifically were catering the stories to certain traits that celebrities have." In the show, Dave's character attends a party in Las Vegas ahead of the studio's big Cinema Con presentation. And Seth was convinced that Dave was perfect for the role. He said: "With Dave, it's like, who do you believe would be in a Ron Howard movie? It's a pretty dramatic movie, who could do that? But also, we knew that he would come back and do this truly ridiculous, stupid thing later in the season." Seth also revealed that Dave brought a great "vibe" to the show's set. The Hollywood star - who previously worked with Dave on 'Superbad', the 2007 comedy film - said: "Dave is the best. "Dave's first, I think, on-camera thing was 'Superbad'." By contrast, James Franco - Dave's brother - previously confessed that his friendship with Seth is "over". The 47-year-old actor enjoyed a hugely successful partnership with Seth for many years, creating movies such as 'Pineapple Express', 'This Is the End' and 'Sausage Party' together - but their friendship collapsed after James was accused of sexually inappropriate behaviour by a number of women. James - who reached a $2 million sexual misconduct settlement in 2021 - told Variety: "I haven't talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it's over. And not for lack of trying. I've told him how much he's meant to me." James has been shunned by Hollywood in recent years. However, the actor appreciates that he's still able to work in the entertainment business. The actor - who has received treatment for sexual addiction - explained: "I'm so grateful to be working. "I did go through a lawsuit, and during that lawsuit I wasn't working. But then COVID hit so everybody wasn't working. So, I don't know, it was all … I mean, we were all kind of in it. So it was sort of like, 'I don't know what I am.' "But I did certainly use the time to, I hope, good purpose. And whatever had been going on with me before, I had to change my whole way of life."

Explainer-What are atmospheric rivers and why do they cause flooding?
(Reuters) -Atmospheric rivers are storms akin to rivers in the sky that dump massive amounts of rain and can cause flooding, trigger mudslides and result in loss of life and enormous property damage. Here's an explanation of how they form, their size and potential impacts. WHAT IS AN ATMOSPHERIC RIVER? The weather system occurs all over the world. It starts when a large amount of water vapor from tropical oceans is carried by a jet stream toward land. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, resulting in rain or snow. They most commonly form in mid-latitude oceans, roughly 30 and 60 degrees north and south, according to NASA. They appear as a trail of wispy clouds that can stretch for hundreds of miles. HOW DO ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS CAUSE FLOODING? Most atmospheric rivers are weak and do not cause damage. In fact, they can provide much-needed rain or snow. Atmospheric rivers can carry up to 15 times the volume of the Mississippi River, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In drought-stricken California, such storms have triggered mudslides, toppled utility poles and blocked roadways, but also helped replenish depleted reservoirs and reduced the risk of wildfires by saturating the state's parched vegetation. In 2019, an atmospheric river nicknamed the "Pineapple Express" hit California. The water vapor from near Hawaii brought rain and triggered mudslides that forced motorists to swim for their lives and sent homes sliding downhill. In 2021, an atmospheric river dumped a month's worth of rain on British Columbia in two days, prompting deadly floods and landslides, devastating communities and severing access to Canada's largest port. HOW WILL CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS? Atmospheric rivers of the kind that drenched California and flooded British Columbia in recent years will become larger - and possibly more destructive - because of climate change, according to scientists. Columns in the atmosphere hundreds of miles (km) long carry water vapor over oceans from the tropics to more temperate regions in amounts more than double the flow of the Amazon River, according to the American Meteorological Society. There are projected to be 10% fewer atmospheric rivers in the future, but they are expected to be 25% wider and longer and carry more water, according to a 2018 research paper. This could make managing water supply much harder as moderate atmospheric rivers, which can be beneficial for water supplies, will be less frequent, and strong ones could become more calamitous.
