Pittsburgh Regional Transit to temporarily close portion of Red Line for rail replacement project
Pittsburgh Regional Transit will temporarily close a portion of the Red Line for almost two weeks starting Tuesday, July 8, as crews complete a rail replacement project near Dawn Station. The work is scheduled to continue through Saturday, July 19. Crews will work to replace tracks that have been in service since 1982, according to a media release from PRT. As a result, Red Line service will be suspended between Westfield Station and South Hills Junction throughout the project. A Red Line rail shuttle will operate inbound and outbound between Westfield and Overbrook Junction stations. Riders traveling inbound to Pittsburgh Riders traveling inbound to Downtown Pittsburgh between Overbrook Junction and Westfield stations are advised to take the outbound Red Line shuttle to Overbrook Junction, walk to Willow Station and board any Blue, Silver, or detoured Red Line train into the city. Riders traveling outbound from Pittsburgh to Castle Shannon, Mount Lebanon, Dormont or Beechview Riders should board any outbound Blue, Silver, or Red Line car from Pittsburgh, travel to Willow Station, walk to the inbound platform of Overbrook Junction and ride the inbound Red Line rail shuttle to your destination. Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus route changes go into effect Sunday
If you ride PRT buses in Pittsburgh, there's a chance your route could look different starting Sunday. Pittsburgh Regional Transit will implement a service adjustment that will affect several routes, stop locations, and schedules. It also includes the launch of Downtown service on the University line. which is the 61A, 61B, 61C, and 71B. This has been in the works for months, but some bus riders say they are still not ready. This will be the last time Donna Oguntayo regularly transfers buses at this stop on Liberty Avenue. "I'm sitting here right now, and the 61C is not going to be here tomorrow, you know," Oguntayo said. The stop for one of the buses she takes is being moved to nearby Fifth Avenue, where the station is still closed off. The distance, she says, won't be an inconvenience. "I'll figure it out." "It'll benefit, and I think the whole city will, at large. It is an improved system of traffic," Anthony Williams said. Fredrick Littlejohn came to KDKA-TV looking for his new bus route. "I don't even know how they're going to get through it for tomorrow," he said. "It sucks." One significant change is that the University Line buses will now utilize the newly painted bus-only lanes on Fifth and Sixth Avenues. "It's just safer, it's convenient," Williams said. "I like (the new bus lanes) because it's a lot of cars," Littlejohn said. "And you know, all the changes of the routes and where to catch what, it was confusing at first, but adjustments, that's what adjustments are," Williams added. Oguntayo thinks there should have been announcements on the buses. "I wish we'd known about it sooner," she said. "But I'm okay with it, everything having to change, but I'm worried about senior citizens, it will mess them up," Littlejohn said. Pittsburgh Regional Transit's website offers a map and allows users to enter their specific bus route to see if service has been impacted. To find out if your route has been affected, click here.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit painting new bus lanes across Downtown Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Regional Transit is painting several streets red across Downtown Pittsburgh as part of the University Line bus rapid transit project. Ask PRT bus riders, and many will say that getting from point A to point B on certain routes can be a test of patience. "(I'm) late for appointments because of traffic backups and block-ups and whatnot. I've been through that," said Pittsburgh resident Melvin Bradford. "The hard part is getting into town and getting out of town," Steve Small of McKeesport said. And that's exactly why PRT is painting at least some of its black tops red. "Keeping people on the bus moving faster and making us more reliable," said Amy Silberman of PRT. These new red lanes are for buses and emergency vehicles only; the exception is the striped parts in turning lanes. The lanes on Fifth Avenue to Grant Street on Liberty Avenue are done. Sixth Avenue from Grant Street to Center Avenue is almost complete. Sixth Avenue from Wood Street to Grant is also almost finished. On Wednesday night, crews are going to be finishing up the section from Wood to Grant, but more painting needs to be done. "Next week, we're going to have work on Fifth Avenue, so ultimately, it will be Fifth Avenue to here on Liberty Avenue to Sixth Avenue that will be the full Downtown loop," Silberman said. What routes will use the red lanes? "That's the 61A, 61B, 61C, and 71B," Silberman said. Will it work? The consensus carries cautious optimism. It's a good concept, but I don't know if it's going to work. Let's hope. Let's keep our fingers crossed," said Jason Key of the Hill District.
