Ahlstrom unveils new PMZ5 parchmentiser at Saint-Séverin plant in France

Ahlstrom, a fibre-based speciality materials provider, has inaugurated a new 'parchmentiser', PMZ5, at its Saint-Séverin plant in France, with an investment of €15m ($16.8m) to support sustainable innovation and customer collaboration within the food packaging market. The parchmentiser is an industrial equipment used to produce durable, grease- and water-resistant vegetable parchment by treating cellulose-based paper, using the parchmentisation process. Ahlstrom president and CEO Helen Mets said: 'For our Saint-Séverin colleagues, this is a major milestone: Ahlstrom's next step in growing our portfolio of solutions that are safe and sustainable by design. "This is a great plant, with great people to match. We believe in you wholeheartedly, and that is why we are investing in Saint-Séverin's growth.' The investment in the new PMZ5 parchmentiser will increase the plant's production capacity and flexibility, allowing Ahlstrom to better serve its customers with high-quality parchment products. The investment reinforces Ahlstrom's role as a notable employer and economic contributor in the Charente and Dordogne regions. Ahlstrom has worked with the local community for more than 150 years, ensuring that the company's growth also benefits the surrounding areas. The company says its commitment to the region is evident in its economic impact, with net sales in 2024 reaching €3bn and providing employment to approximately 6,800 individuals. In March 2025, Ahlstrom launched LamiBak Flex, the latest addition to its LamiBak collection of base papers. Last month, meanwhile, US-based speciality paper company Pixelle Specialty Solutions entered into a binding agreement to divest its facility in Wisconsin, US, to Ahlstrom. Chillicothe paper mill will remain open through 2025

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WCMH) — A Chillicothe paper mill that was set to shutdown and leave 800 people without jobs will remain open through the end of the year. One day after Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) sent a scathing letter to the CEOs of Pixelle Specialty Solutions, a subsidiary of HIG Capital, he announced Friday that HIG capital agreed to pause the closure and keep the paper mill open until the end of 2025 after speaking with executives. Attorney says policies restricting LifeWise, like those in Columbus schools, could violate First Amendment 'I look forward to working with them to find a solution that guarantees the well-being of Ohio workers,' Moreno wrote in a post on X that included the announcement of the closure's pause. Paper mills have been a part of Chillicothe since at least the 19th century. The company said the mill was going to shut down in phases over the coming weeks. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Senator Moreno: Chillicothe Paper Mill closure paused till end of year

CHILLICOTHE ― U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) had a hopeful message for the community on Friday when he announced on X, formerly Twitter, that the closure of the paper mill would be paused until the end of the year. Speaking to a large crowd near the mill, he said, "We're going to find a company that's willing to come to Chillicothe and invest in people first.' More: Chillicothe businesses are banding together to support paper mill employees 'I am confident that this mill will not only survive next year, but for the next 200 years in this community.' Pixelle Specialty Solutions had announced the closure earlier this week, which would affect approximately 800 employees. The mill has been part of the community for more than 200 years. DeWine said state and local leaders were already working to find a new company to take over the mill — and they now have more time to do so. 'We cannot guarantee you that, but we're all in this together,' DeWine said. 'Nobody can come down here and walk around and talk to the people in this crowd and not think, 'My, we've got to do something.'' Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney said he is very relieved at this news. "Well, I will say that my first thoughts are with the families that get a little bit of time now," Feeney said. "I hope Easter weekend will be a little more relaxing for them." Feeney said he hopes this news gives workers optimism for the future. "I'm very grateful to the team, state, the governor, and senators who got the pause for us," Feeney said. "I'm looking forward to digging in Monday to keep this thing open and fighting like hell." We will continue to update this story throughout the day. We are committed to providing the resources and assistance they need while also ensuring continuity for our customers until the closure is complete.' The company said the closure process is expected to be done in the next few weeks. Mike Throne, President and CEO of Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce, said that paper-making has been a cornerstone of the Ross County economy for 215 years. 'This announcement brings profound sadness and significant uncertainty to the dedicated individuals and families who have poured their hearts and souls into the mill for so long,' he said. 'The thought of the impact on these employees, our neighbors, and our friends weighs heavily on us. Their years of hard work, loyalty, and the skills they have honed within those walls are deeply valued and will not be forgotten. We extend our deepest gratitude for their unwavering commitment to our community.' The company says it will move most of its operations to Pennsylvania. The mill is one of Ohio's oldest industrial landmarks. [SIGN UP: WHIO-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
