Grandson of 10th US President John Tyler, who left the White House 180 years ago, dies at 96

The grandson of the 10th President of the United States, John Tyler, has died at 96 — 180 years after his grandfather was last in the White House. Harrison Ruffin Tyler, the son of President Tyler's 13th child, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, died on Sunday evening at a Virginia nursing home, ending the last living link to an 18th-century presidential administration. When he was born on Nov. 9, 1928, his father was 75 years old. Having children into old age was a family trait, as President Tyler was 63 when Lyon he was born. President Tyler would go on to have two more children before he died in 1862 age 71. 4 Harrison Ruffin Tyler, the last living grandson of President John Tyler, has died at 96. WTVR Born into a prominent slaveholding Virginia family in 1790, John Tyler served as President William Henry Harrison's vice president on the Whig ticket in 1840. He became president after Harrison died just 31 days into his term. While in office, Tyler was a believer in manifest destiny, and signed a bill offering Texas statehood shortly before leaving office. 4 Tyler, the 10th US President, was born in 1790 and served one term in the White House between 1841 and 1845. Getty Images But he fell out with the Whig Party, who chose not to nominate him for reelection, instead opting for Henry Clay, who lost to the Democrat James K. Polk. He fathered more children than any other American president, including eight with his first wife, Letitia Christian, and seven with his second, Julia Gardiner, whom he married in 1844 — two years after Letitia died of a stroke. Harrison Ruffin Tyler was a feature of curiosity from a young age due to his ties to America's past. 4 President Tyler was 63 when his wife gave birth to Harrison's father, Lyon Gardiner Tyler. Getty Images At age 8, he was invited to the White House to meet FDR, and Lady Nancy Astor paid his $5,000 tuition fees at William & Mary College even though the two had never met. He also had a historic lineage on the side of his mother, Susan Ruffin Tyler, and was a direct descendant of Pocahontas. But despite that, he grew up poor during the Great Depression and, after graduating, he continued his education at Virginia Tech due to a lack of employment opportunities. In 1968, he founded the industrial water treatment company ChemTreat with his business partner William P Simmons, serving top clients such as Kraft and Philip Morris. 4 Harrison had been living in a Virginia nursing home when he died on Sunday. WTVR In 1975, he bought his grandfather's former home, Sherwood Forest Plantation, from relatives and restored it along with his wife, Francis Payne Bouknight Tylor. The property is now open to the public and operated by a foundation. It boasts not only 'the longest frame house in America' but is also home to a ghost known as the Gray Lady, who visitors claim to have heard for over 200 years. In 1996, Tyler bought and financed the preservation of Fort Pocahontas, a Civil War-era earthwork close to Sherwood Forest built by black Union soldiers. In 2001, he donated thousands of papers and books, along with $5 million of his own money, to William & Mary's history department, which was renamed in his honor in 2021, The Richmonder reported. Tyler's wife died in 2019, and he had been living in a nursing home in Richmond at the time of his death. He is survived by three children and numerous of grandchildren.

History's Most Gruesome Deaths Revealed

They say history is always written from the perspective of the victor, even though those who have been defeated in gruesome deaths find themselves immortalized in some capacity. Their endings aren't pretty by any means, though they're remembered more vividly than those who've left this world on a less disastrous note. Recently, I did a deep dive on r/AskReddit where, in one post, someone asked users to name the "famous historical figures [who] had deaths proportionally brutal to their level of fame." Here's what people had to say: Note: Some responses have been condensed and edited for clarity. "Ulysses S. Grant, but it was still a noble death." "After losing all his money to a Ponzi scheme, he defied a throat cancer diagnosis in order to write his memoirs (published by Mark Twain) so that the proceeds would sustain his wife after his death. He wrote one thousand words a day, every day, until the cancer left him too weak to write. At this point, he hired a stenographer and dictated the final chapters through the pain of advanced throat cancer, for which he was denied morphine to keep his mind sharp. At the end, he was forced to wear a wool scarf for all public appearances to hide the fist-sized tumor in front of his a year's work and 366,000 words written, he gave the manuscript to Mark Twain to publish and was told that 100,000 copies had been pre-ordered. One week later, he succumbed to cancer. Julia Grant and their children received the modern equivalent of 12 million dollars. The work was such a commercial success, it outsold Twain's other work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."–u/maejaws "Julius Caesar's death is pretty wild. Stabbed to death on the Senate floor by people he thought were his political allies and personal friends." –u/JackC1126 "Blackbeard the Pirate (Edward Teach). Cornered by the British Navy, he went down fighting. When his body was examined, he had been shot five times and had 20 sword cuts. The British sailors fired another 20 shots into his body and cut off his head to be displayed as a warning to other would-be pirates." –u/Johhnymaddog316 "Sigurd the Mighty. A Norwegian Jarl of Shetland who conquered part of Northern Scotland." "Charles of Navarre (Charles the Bad) died a quite terrible death. At 54 years old (1387), he fell seriously ill, and on the doctor's advice, they wrapped him in linen soaked in brandy. Because, you know, medieval medicine. Unfortunately, the maid tripped and dropped a candle, which set the brandy ablaze, burning the man alive." –u/MinuteCow8927 "Anne Boleyn. Henry VIII must have actually loved her at one point, to then turn around and have her not only executed, but then erase her as much as he possibly could afterwards. He felt so betrayed (despite being the betrayer himself), he tried to erase her existence." –u/TrespianRomance "Jamestown governor John Ratcliffe, the villain in Disney's Pocahontas. Had his skin peeled off and thrown in a fire in front of him." –u/Pantastic_Studios "Joan of Arc, a 19-year-old girl being slowly burned to death by the same church she dedicated her life to, while chanting Christ's name over and over. Only to be named a Saint by that same church centuries later." –u/SemperFun62 "Qaddafi getting sodomized with a bayonet has to be up there." –u/flightist "Robespierre. Shot in the jaw, unable to speak, which is what helped start the Terror in the first place — his words. Taken to the guillotine like so many others." –u/drulaps "Roland Freisler died a fittingly brutal death. He was a Nazi judge who oversaw a lot of torture and thousands of death sentences. Differing accounts say that he was killed either when a piece of his courtroom crushed him in an air raid, or when shrapnel hit him and he ran out only to bleed to death on the courthouse steps." –u/petitecrivain "Stalin lay on the ground in his office for about 11 hours after having a stroke, dying slowly in pain. The staff were too scared to enter his private office without explicit permission, so they waited until a senior person showed up." –u/unclear_warfare Martin Luther King Jr., as the most visible leader of the Civil Rights Movement, was assassinated in a brutal act of racial violence intended to silence his powerful message. Instead, his death became a rallying cry for the movement and further elevated his status as a global icon of peace and justice." –u/Spice-Fairy04 "Bonnie and Clyde. Holy shit, that car had a lot of bullet holes in it." –u/PreparedStatement "Joseph Smith." "Today, he is best known for founding the Mormon religion, but he had higher ambitions than that. He started a large cult, very similar to what you see today, where he was a godlike leader who had multiple wives and required complete adherence from his followers. But this was the 1830s in the 'Wild West,' where people were distracted with other things, so before time caught up with him, he had developed as a full-on nation-state, with thousands of members, in Western Illinois. For the second time in a 10-year span, Smith amassed a large, heavily armed militia, overthrew the government, destroyed the newspapers, imposed martial law, and declared that he was running for US president, at which point it was assumed he would attempt to take over the entire country, whether he won or was charged with treason and taken to an Illinois prison. Before he could face trial, hundreds of men stormed the jail, shot Smith repeatedly, at which point Smith tried to escape by jumping from the second-story window, which probably killed him, but the mob went outside and beat and repeatedly shot Smith's corpse just to be was a murder trial for some of the mob members who killed Smith, but all the defendants were acquitted, partially due to jury nullification, but also because there were so many people who shot, beat, and took credit for killing him, it was impossible to prove that one person actually did the deed."–u/Many_Collection_8889 "William the Conqueror died of a massive infection caused by an injury he received from the pommel of his saddle." –u/MartialBob "Samuel Doe (21st President of Liberia). He faced 12 hours of torture (which included his ears getting cut off and some of his fingers and toes amputated) before he was finally murdered."

Disneyland Celebrates Its 70th Birthday With Grand Year-Long Festivities

Disneyland (read: the "happiest place on Earth") is celebrating its 70th birthday this year. With a massive year-long-plus celebration planned ahead, this year will indeed be magical for all those visiting the theme park in California. The festivities kicked off on May 16 under the fitting theme 'Celebrate Happy!' On Thursday, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, hosted colourful parades and shows amidst the mesmerising decorations of the theme park to mark the beginning of the grand celebration. Stage show director for Disney Live Entertainment, Scott Damien Arroyo, also revealed that the gala events will not thrive in the past; instead, they will boast a series of inputs from the future as well. "We don't live in the past, but we honour the past. We really are always looking backwards as we move forward,' he told People. FYI: Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, and since then, it has become one of the must-visit destinations on the bucket list of many. The celebrations opened with 'Celebrate Happy Cavalcade' parades on the Main Street Magic Shop. It featured all-time favourite Disney characters like Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Mickey Mouse and others. With a massive crowd witnessing the procession, which also included various moving stages and dance performances by Snow White, Jasmine, and Disney Princesses, including Pocahontas, it made everyone groove to the brand new songs. Posting a lovely video from the same event on the official Instagram page of Disneyland, the caption read, 'What's a celebration without a cavalcade?' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Disneyland (@disneyland) Jennifer Magill with Disney Live Entertainment also mentioned Easter eggs finding a spot in the colourful celebration of Disneyland's birthday. 'You can look closely and you can see in Mickey's jacket, there are some nods to Sorcerer Mickey in there, as well as the pixie dust motif throughout those designs. And they're just so fun and contemporary and I think our guests are really going to enjoy seeing them,' she added. Also Read: Disney World Gets Its First Michelin Star Restaurant Following this, the events will also feature a 'Tapestry of Happiness' projection show for five minutes at the It's A Small World ride in Disneyland. 'I call this a little show with a big heart. It's beautiful. It's a five-minute projection show on the facade of It's A Small World that's going to play three times a night,' said Susanna Tubert, the creative director of Disney Live Entertainment. Then comes the 'Paint the Night' Parade, offering dazzling electric floats featuring characters from Tinkerbell to Ariel and even Monsters, Inc. and Cars. This is followed by the 'Wondrous Journeys' Nighttime Spectacular, just a short walk from the Sleeping Beauty Castle in the evening. There are also other shows like "Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!" Parade in Disney California Adventure Park, fireworks over the Disneyland Castle, and many other events lined up.

Kim Kardashian appears agitated after security guard trips over her Met Gala 2025 gown

Don't mess with Kim Kardashian. The 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' alum didn't appear happy when one of her security guards stumbled on her custom head-to-toe leather look during fashion's biggest night. Leaving her hotel to head to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday for the 2025 Met Gala, Kardashian, 44, was caught on video reacting to the staffer seemingly stepping on the train of her Chrome Hearts attire. In a TikTok video captured by a fan, Kardashian seems to do a one-two shuffle before darting her eyeballs over her shoulder to a man from her security detail after he got caught on her attire and almost took a tumble. Taking a moment to pause, the mom of four gathered herself and continued toward the car. The reality star-turned-entrepreneur added to the look with a string of pearls and a leather fedora while she was dripped in diamonds. Kardashian is no stranger to the Met Gala. From her 2013 Givenchy couch dress to her Thierry Mugler 'wet dress' and that infamous Marilyn Monroe gown, the 'Kardashians' star always leaves the fashion world something to talk about. Her ex-husband, Kanye West, has done her no favors for keeping her out of headlines, either.

'I'm a maternity nurse and these triplet baby names are the worst I've ever heard'

Many parents will want to give their little ones names as unique as they are - but one maternity nurse said that these triplet names were the worst she'd heard Parents often try to give their little ones the most unique and outlandish names they can to make them stand out from the crowd. Having the same name said over and over again on the register when your child goes to school is less than ideal. But sometimes, parents are taking the individuality too far, and it's leaving people who come into contact with them dumbfounded and wondering how to pronounce some of them. One woman said that she was in nursing school and decided to ask maternity nurses what the worst names they'd ever seen were during their job. The results left her cringing. ‌ Taking to Reddit's 'tragedeighs' forum, the woman explained: "I'm in nursing school and recently had a rotation on the labour and delivery floor, so of course I had to ask what the worst tragedeighs they've seen." ‌ Some of the stand outs were: Ya'AllJealous My'King Twins named Awasha and Adrya Jream But then, "by far the worst one" was a woman who had triplets and decided to give the girls Disney-inspired names. She wrote: "Triplets named Moana, Pocahontas, and Elsa respectively. The worst part about this one is that the parents were huge Disney Adults and they're fully Caucasian". Moana, made famous for the film with the same name, is of Polynesian heritage. The film draws from the rich cultures, traditions, and stories of Polynesian islands such as Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, and Hawaii. The filmmakers collaborated closely with cultural experts from the Pacific Islands, known as the Oceanic Story Trust, to ensure an authentic representation of Polynesian history and mythology. ‌ Moana is portrayed as a courageous and resourceful young leader who comes from the fictional island of Motunui, which is inspired by real Polynesian cultures and their deep connection to the ocean, navigation, and storytelling. Pocahontas is a Native American character inspired by the historic figure of Matoaka, a Powhatan woman from the Tidewater region of what is now Virginia. ‌ She belonged to the Powhatan Confederacy, a network of Algonquian-speaking Indigenous tribes in that region. Disney's portrayal of Pocahontas in the 1995 animated movie is highly fictionalised and romanticised, but it draws from her cultural heritage as a member of the Powhatan people. The film loosely addresses elements of her tribal identity, such as her connection to nature and harmony with the environment, although it has faced criticism for historical inaccuracies and cultural simplifications. Elsa, the character from Disney's Frozen, is the queen of Arendelle, a fictional Nordic kingdom inspired by Scandinavian culture, particularly Norway. ‌ Her heritage reflects elements of traditional Scandinavian customs, architecture, and landscapes. The design of Arendelle incorporates influences from Norwegian stave churches, fjords, and other elements of Nordic culture, tying Elsa and her background to this region. Additionally, in Frozen 2, it is revealed that Elsa has ties to the Northuldra people, an indigenous group inspired by the Sámi, the indigenous people of Scandinavia. This connection emphasises her spiritual bond with nature and her role as the fifth spirit, bridging the natural and human worlds. In the comments, people were horrified at the names that had been chosen for these children. One wrote: "Ya'alljealous is probably the worst name I've ever seen… and let me tell you, NOBODY will be jealous, that kid will be bullied relentlessly for that name". Another penned: "There's a kid at my daughter's school named Mi'Desire. It sounds so icky hearing an adult say it". Speaking about the Disney names, one woman said: "Elsa is fine and there were so many other good options to go with it. Aurora, Ariel, Anna, Jasmine - even Belle or Merida would have been better".
