14-year-old boy given electric shock over ‘stealing cellphone', 1 held

A 14-year-old boy was allegedly tortured at a jeans dyeing factory in Maheshtala, South 24 Parganas, near Kolkata, on suspicion of stealing the factory owner's mobile phone, police officials said. The boy who works as a worker at the factory was allegedly hung upside down, beaten, and given electric shocks by the factory owner, Shahenshah, officials further said. A purported viral video of the incident led to police intervention, and the boy was rescued with serious injuries. 'An individual known to the main accused has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing,' an official said. The boy's family claims that he was falsely accused and they have filed a complaint. 'After searching, we found out that he did not steal the mobile phone. He was tortured in this way by slandering him. We have complained to the police,' the boy's uncle told media persons. The boy's family, on seeing the video, contacted the Islampur Police Station as well as filed a complaint at the Rabindranagar police station in Maheshtala. They also approached the Patagoda outpost of Islampur police station, demanding that police take immediate action to bring their son home safely. Police officials said that both the accused and the victim are from Islampur and the incident reportedly took place in the Kankhuli Purbapara area of Ward No. 8 at a factory, run from a rented house by the owner. BJP MP Alok Sharma accuses Bhopal's Muslim gym trainers of ‘love jihad', fuelling Bajrang Dal's campaign

Speaking to the media Sunday, Sharma said, 'There are many gyms in Bhopal and we are also preparing a list where the trainers are allegedly Muslims. There should be women trainers too.' Sharma's statement came just days after members of the Bajrang Dal visited gyms in Bhopal's Ayodhya Nagar locality, searching for Muslim trainers. They later submitted a memorandum to the Ayodhya Nagar Police Station, alleging that Muslim trainers in the city's gyms are involved in 'love jihad'. Bhopal: Alok Sharma, BJP MP from Bhopal, has stirred controversy once again by stating that a list of gyms employing Muslim trainers is being compiled and will soon be submitted to the police. 'We are making a list and will be submitting it to the police. The police will do their work, the law will do its job and in Madhya Pradesh there is Dr Mohan Yadav's government and no one has the permission to indulge in love jihad or land jihad. The law will take stringent action against such people. This is all I want to say,' added Sharma, elected as MP in 2024. He has previously served as the mayor of Bhopal and is known for his hardliner image. Last month, Sharma had demanded that the government sterilise those accused of 'love jihad'. In January this year, he proposed exploring Bhopal's iconic lake in search of remnants of a Vedic city he believes lies submerged beneath it. He made this suggestion during a meeting at Delhi's Sansad Bhawan, held to assess the heritage potential of cities for conservation efforts. In the past, Sharma has called for enforcing a uniform 10 pm closing time for all shops across Bhopal. He noted that while commercial areas like New Market and Sarafa adhered to the deadline, several parts of old Bhopal, like Qazi Camp and Laxmi Theatre area, remained open until midnight. The areas pointed out by Sharma are dominated by Muslim community. Sharma also claimed that the late-night markets were 'spoiling children'. Here's what happened Muslim gym trainers face heat The crackdown on gym trainers in Bhopal began after a Muslim man, identified as Mohsin Khan, was booked by Indore Police on charges of sexual misconduct. Khan, who runs a private shooting range in Indore, was booked along with two others following allegations by a minor girl accusing them of rape, cheating, and molestation. According to the minor, she began working at Khan's house during the pandemic. She alleged that she was raped, shown obscene videos, and held captive for about 15 days. Last week, members of the Bajrang Dal visited several gyms in Bhopal, asking those working out to disclose their names and identities. Later that day, they submitted a memorandum to the police, demanding action against 'outsiders' who, they alleged, entered the city posing as Hindu men to befriend Hindu women as part of a 'love jihad' campaign. Following reports of these visits, Sub-Inspector Dinesh Sharma was deployed to monitor the situation and ensure there was no law-and-order issue. However, a video later surfaced showing the sub-inspector sitting with Bajrang Dal members, saying that Muslims should neither be hired as gym trainers nor be allowed in as clients. After the video came to light, he was transferred from the police station and attached to the reserve force. Speaking to The Print, Mahesh Lilhare, State House Office at Ayodhya Nagar, said, 'After the video came to our knowledge, an inquiry was initiated. As of now, Dinesh Sharma has denied making any such remarks and the authenticity of the video is under investigation.' Vaishnavi Hagawane death: Cops probe whether she was threatened at gunpoint

The Pimpri-Chinchwad police are probing whether Vaishnavi Hagawane, who allegedly died by suicide due to harassment over dowry, was threatened at gunpoint by Nilesh Ramchandra Chavan (34), who was arrested from India-Nepal border. A resident of Karve Nagar, Chavan was made an accused in the dowry death case on May 24 for allegedly causing cruelty to her 10-month-old son. After a rigorous search operation, police nabbed him at Sunauli in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh, located on the Nepal border, on Friday. He was arrested and brought to the Bavdhan police station, around 4 am on Saturday. Police then produced Chavan before a court in Pune and sought his custody for five days to investigate his role in the case. Police said Chavan possessed a gun and a gun licence. Police told the court they want to investigate whether he threatened Vaishanvi with the gun. Police said they are also probing Chavan's financial connections with Vaishnavi's husband Shashank, brother-in-law Sushil and father-in-law Rajendra Hagawane. Police submitted before the court details of the offence lodged against him at the Warje police station in 2022, under sections 392, 323, 506/2, 504, 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Police said he was on the run for four months in this case, filed by his wife. Police told the court that Chavan is suspected of being a repeated offender for harassing women. A probe is on to find out whether Chavan has harassed more women in the past. Police are also investigating his cell phone calls with Vaishnavi's husband and in-laws, booked in the dowry death case. The court passed an order on Saturday, remanding Chavan to police custody till June 3. According to the police, Vaishnavi allegedly died by suicide at her in-laws' house in Bhukum in the Mulshi taluka of the Pune district on May 16. Her father, Anil Sahebrao Kaspate, 51, a resident of Wakad, lodged an FIR against her husband and in-laws at the Bavdhan Police Station on May 17. Police arrested Vaishnavi's husband, Shashank, 27, father-in-law and expelled NCP leader Rajendra, 57, mother-in-law Lata, 54, sister-in-law Karishma, 31, and brother-in-law Sushil, 27. Also, three others were arrested for helping Rajendra and Sushil Hagawane, while they were on the run. Shashank, Lata and Karishma were lodged in Yerwada jail after a court granted them judicial custody. Police said Chavan is a close friend of Karishma Hagawane. He was arrested while he was allegedly trying to escape to Nepal. He had allegedly taken illegal custody of Vaishnavi's boy after her death. On May 22, a separate FIR was lodged against Chavan at the Warje Police Station in Pune city for allegedly threatening Vaishnavi's father and family members when they went to their residence to take custody of her son on May 20. Subsequently, the Pune city police started the procedure for cancelling gun licences of Nilesh Chavan, Shashank and Sushil Hagawane. Meanwhile, the police produced Rajendra and Sushil Hagawane before the court on Saturday and sought an extension in custody for three days to probe them along with Chavan. Court extended their custody till June 3. Police said suicide note was not found with Vaishnavi's body. In the FIR, her father alleged that at the time of Vaishnavi's wedding, they had given 510 grams of gold, silver, and a Fortuner SUV to her in-laws. The FIR further alleged that Vaishnavi's in-laws had been abusing her, mentally and physically, asking her to bring Rs 2 crore more to purchase a property. Her father also said in the FIR that there were injury marks on Vaishnavi's body, alleging that this suggested physical abuse, adding that he feared that his daughter had been murdered. Meanwhile, police probe revealed that Vaishnavi had attempted suicide by consuming 'rat poison' on November 27, 2023. Also the postmortem of her dead body had revealed the cause of her death as 'death due to ligature compression of neck, with evidence of multiple blunt injuries over body.'

Landslide claims 7 lives including 4 kids, and 2 pregnant women in Arunachal

Itanagar, May 31 (UNI) In a devastating incident, seven individuals, including four children and two pregnant women, lost their lives after their vehicle was swept off NH-13 by a massive landslide triggered by relentless rainfall. The tragedy occurred on Friday night, approximately 3 km from Bana towards Seppa in Arunachal Pradesh's East Kameng district, police said on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Shankar alias Saju Budi Aka (35) and his wife Tasum Budi Aka (25), who was 4 months pregnant, Kachung Budi Aka (8), Nicha Budi Aka (4), Jajum Yame (33), who was 7 months pregnant, Tushum Yame (5), and Patiya Yame (7). All were residents of Kitchang village, Bana, in Bichom district. East Kameng SP Kamdam Sikom said, Seppa Police Station received a distress call reporting that a white Maruti Fronx had been swept downhill by a sudden landslide. Responding with urgency, a police team was immediately dispatched to the site. Upon arrival, locals informed the team that the vehicle carrying seven individuals had been forcefully pushed off the road and had plunged into a deep gorge, disappearing from view. The SP said that adverse weather severely hampered the rescue efforts with continuous torrential rain, fresh landslides, and extremely poor visibility made it nearly impossible to safely conduct search operations. At first light on Saturday, the rescue operation resumed with renewed determination and crucial support from local villagers. After hours of strenuous effort, the wreckage of the vehicle was located approximately 150 meters below the highway. The vehicle was found completely mangled, bearing the marks of a violent impact from the steep fall. Tragically, all seven occupants were found dead inside the vehicle. With great difficulty, the rescue team managed to retrieve the bodies from the mangled remains. This heartbreaking incident has claimed nine lives in total, including two unborn children. Legal formalities are currently underway, after which the bodies will be handed over to their respective families, SP Sikom said, adding that further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
