ST PHOTO: KELVIN CHNG SINGAPORE – The launch of snack-themed Labubu dolls drew a queue of some 160 fans at retailer Pop Mart's Ion Orchard store on June 28, with the earliest arrivals reaching before dawn. The 25-year-old, who declined to give her last name, said she had made the effort 'because it's Labubu, it's going to be popular'. The long-time collector, who owns over 30 of the sharp-toothed, fluffy-eared dolls, added: 'It's not so bad today. (Arrving at) 5.30am is considered late for the more popular series.' The queue for the last Labubu release at the same store in April began at 2am, a Pop Mart part-timer told The Straits Times. This latest range, called The Monsters Wacky Mart series, launched on the Pop Mart global online store on June 13 and landed in Singapore on June 28. It turns the viral plushies into Japanese convenience store grub – fried shrimp, corn on the cob, a sandwich. Figurines come in 12 designs, plus a 13th rare edition shaped like a microwave oven that buyers have a 1 in 144 chance of getting. Hype was highest among the mostly adult crowd for a fluffy AirPods case, shaped like shrimp tempura, which can hold Apple's line of wireless earphones. The limited quantity releases of Labubu dolls has been known to drive up prices on the resale market and even spark brawls. In May, Pop Mart paused sales of the toy in its stores in Britain after some fans came to blows over them. After getting a sneak peek of Pop Mart's latest Labubu collection, fans of this devilish little creature will be excited to know they can soon get their hands on it. Pop Mart hinted on June 3 at a new food-inspired Labubu collection on their Instagram, with a carousel post featuring the beloved character styled as a tempura shrimp. This was followed up with a video trailer on Pop Mart Singapore's Instagram page last Saturday (June 7), featuring its new collection called The Monsters Wacky Mart Series, offering fans more details on what to expect. The range of items in the collection is now up on Pop Mart Singapore's website, though they will only be available for purchase from 10am this Friday. The new series will include three types of blindboxes: The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Pinch Pendant Blind Box ($13.90), The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Figures ($15.90) and The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Fridge Magnet Blind Box ($15.90). The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Figures, featured in the video trailer uploaded by Pop Mart Singapore, includes figurines inspired by convenience food items like onigiri, cup noodles, yakitori, milk and more. In addition to the randomised boxes, fans will also be able to purchase items like The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Messenger Bag, a grocery paper bag-inspired fabric bag featuring a Labubu sardine can for $29.90. For those who prefer plush keychains, there's also The Monsters Wacky Mart Series Earphone Case ($24.90) featuring a tempura shrimp Labubu that doubles up as a pouch for your earphones. At this point, we're all no strangers to the collectible toy character, Labubu. It's caused waves across the globe, including Singapore — with fans willing to fork out hundreds of dollars for the doll and F&B businesses coming up with Labubu-inspired treats. In the coming days, Labubu might just start another storm as Pop Mart has just released a teaser for their new The Monsters Wacky Mart series on Instagram yesterday (June 3). The announcement was made on Pop Mart's main Instagram page, but with no word yet of the launch on Pop Mart Singapore's account. While not much information is available yet on what the full collection will look like and when it's going to be released, it appears to be a food-inspired one. The most-recent post included a Labubu vinyl-faced plush, styled as a piece of tempura shrimp. The post also included a 'convenience store' hashtag, which might be a hint that the series could be inspired by convenience store bites. "A dango plush pendant would be so cute!" one person suggested. "This is the Labubu I need! Also Pop Mart, hear me out, French collection. Baguettes, croissants, macarons and tartlets," another stated. Since being uploaded, the Instagram post has already garnered over 81,000 likes and 925 comments as of writing. Some fans however, withheld their excitement — predicting that it might not be so easy to get their hands on the new launch due to their massive popularity. "I need this but also know I will not be able to get it," a comment read. "Love it! But I can already see myself hyping up for its release and then it being sold out as soon as I hit checkout," another netizen lamented. "Get ready for them to be sold out before they even drop," someone said. Many also observed that resellers would be snatching up the collectible and hiking up prices. "Another impossible drop item to get because resellers will buy them all and sell them for two times or even three times the price," a commenter wrote. "Trying to buy a Labubu is one of the hardest things I've ever done," another read. Pop Mart's Labubu's most recent drop was The Monsters Big Into Energy series — a plush pendant blind box featuring the character with a tie-dye-styled fur design. It was launched on April 25 and is currently sold out on Pop Mart Singapore's website. The brand currently carries another food-inspired Labubu product — the Labubu Lemon Tea Figure — which is available at $39.90 with a minimum spend of $15.90, limited to one set per pax. Last June, Pop Mart also released a Singapore-exclusive Merlion Labubu called Labubu Hide and Seek in Singapore. The doll was available at the Pop Toy Show at Marina Bay Sands which took place in August.
