Artist begins transforming town centre buildings into musical murals

IT WAS after several conversations with members of some of Stourbridge's iconic musical exports that one artist birthed a creative idea to put the town back at the forefront of the country's artistic scene. Cal, a Stourbridge-based artist who has been active for over two decades, has begun a project painting murals of the logos of several bands born out of the town on buildings for all to see. The first completed work, an ode to rockers Pop Will Eat Itself, now adorns the side of the Direct2Print building on Foster Street, with the second mural of alt-rock band, The Wonder Stuff, almost ready to be unveiled just off the ring road on the side of The Bridge House. 'The Poppies' painting can be enjoyed by more than just Stourbridge locals, with an image of the mural already hanging in the prestigious V&A museum in London. He said: 'We're known all over the UK for our music – I went to Tenby not that long ago and spoke to a woman who instantly knew Stourbridge for its bands. 'We're bigger than we think we are, and I don't want Stourbridge to be just another clone town with no identity. 'We should be celebrating our music and the arts and trying to promote creativity more.' Five bands will be featured in Cal's project: Pop Will Eat Itself, The Wonder Stuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Diamond Head and, hopefully, an ode to a certain local, Robert Plant. The artist, who goes only by his first name, said the next mural on his to-do list is for Ned's Atomic Dustbin, with the band encouraging him to 'go big or go home' with the design. Cal, who is doing the work voluntarily, thanked the local businesses who have made his project possible, and the people of Stourbridge for their warm reception to his work. He said: 'Without Archava Scaffolding, I would not have been able to get up the buildings, and none of this would be possible. The Wonder Stuff mural is almost complete (Image: Olivia Warburton / NQ) 'Also the businesses, so far Dirct2Print and Bridge House, who have been up for me using their walls, and Brierley Printers and the John Porter Community Fund, who have been a massive help. 'It's been a community effort, and so far, everyone has been brilliant about the work. 'Of course, it's thanks to the bands as well – these guys are still selling out tours and bringing out new music and deserve to be celebrated.' Timed rather perfectly, the Poppies mural in particular coincides with the band's 40th anniversary and marks the release of their new single, 'Bruiser', which was released yesterday (May 27).

AFC Telford boss calls promotion to National League North 'sensational'

AFC Telford manager Kevin Milkin described the club's promotion back to National League North as "sensational" after victory over Kettering Town in the Southern League Premier play-off final. The Bucks fought back twice from a goal down to beat the Poppies 4-2 and clinch a return to the second tier of non-league football following their relegation from the National League two seasons ago. "It's amazing. It's not really sunk in yet," Milkin told BBC Radio Shropshire. "To come to Kettering's patch and do what we've done - so much credit to the players, who've been amazing." Telford had trailed 1-0 at half-time and 2-1 but got back on level terms through Jordan Piggott after Orrin Pendley had made it 1-1. Right-back Jahdahn Fridye-Harper then put the visitors in the lead for the first time with 10 minutes to go before substitute Rhys Hilton made certain of promotion. "We had lots of good moments in the first half, and we knew we needed to stay in the game at half-time," Milkin said. "The lads kept us in there, kept believing and doing the right things. "To get through it like we have is sensational for everybody."

Port let two-goal lead slip — but find a late winner!

THE ISLE of Wight's three Wessex sides earned a result. COWES SPORTS 2, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES 2 In the Premier, it was the classic games of two halves — the Yachtsmen dominant in the first half, but they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw with the Poppies. Cowes dominated the first half, with Jared Tout-Walters and Jake Wright netting in the 28th and 32nd minutes respectively. However, in the second half, they allowed the Poppies to score twice, against the run of play. The first goal was an impressive strike curled past Ed Hatt in the 65th minute, followed by a header five minutes later. Cowes' lack of concentration and assertiveness in their box from a lofted free-kick from the halfway line was to blame for the equaliser. After the match, first team coach Mark Woodhouse said: "I'm frustrated because we were brilliant in the first half and executed our game plan well." NEWPORT 3, WHITCHURCH UNITED 2 Meanwhile, in Division 1, Port got back to winning ways against struggling Whitchurch United at Beatrice Avenue in East Cowes. Newport got off to a great start, with Kai Grace giving them the lead after ten minutes. Other than a Ji Nash effort that went just wide four minutes before the break, Grace's goal divided the sides at half-time. Newport gave themselves an important cushion on 56 minutes — a super strike from outside the box by Joe Butcher, 2-0. But a mix-up at the back allowed Whitchurch to pull one back after 70 minutes. Ten minutes later and all of Port's hard work dissolved away when they allowed Whitchurch to equalise, 2-2. But the Islanders responded brilliantly — their skipper, Macauley Watterson scoring straight from a Joe Butcher corner with a deft header two minutes later. RINGWOOD TOWN 1, EAST COWES VICS 1 East Cowes Vics drew 1-1 against Ringwood Town on Saturday. Vics were looking to bounce back from a mid-week defeat, but were without several key players, including top scorer Jacob Reynolds. Gareth Bricknell put the Vics ahead in the ninth minute, from a long ball by Zak Sullivan. However, Vics couldn't hold the lead, with Ringwood's Lee Vint equalising in the 24th minute. The Islanders had several chances to regain the lead, with Adam Voller and Josh Neale both going close, but were unable to find the net.
