Ex-election candidate jailed 10 years over husband's death

Lau Seck Yan, who ran as an independent candidate in the 2018 Port Dickson by-election, previously pleaded not guilty to murder. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A former election candidate has been sentenced to 10 years in jail after pleading guilty in the Seremban High Court to culpable homicide not amounting to murder over her husband's death three years ago. Justice Rohani Ibrahim meted out the sentence on Lau Seck Yan, 58, after she pleaded guilty to the amended charge, Sinar Harian reported. Lau, who ran as an independent candidate in the 2018 Port Dickson by-election, previously pleaded not guilty to murder. Rohani ordered Lau's jail sentence to commence from the date of her arrest on Jan 23, 2022. Lau was charged with causing bodily injury that was likely to cause death to Poh Seng Hiap, 55, at a house in Rasah Kemayan Golf & Country Township, Seremban 2 at 3.30pm on Jan 23, 2022. The former lecturer at a private college was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine upon conviction. Her lawyer, Kitson Foong, had asked the court for a lower jail term since Lau had pleaded guilty and did not have a criminal record. Deputy public prosecutor Khairunnisa Hazwani Omar sought a sentence commensurate with the seriousness of the crime, citing public interest in the case. The 2018 Port Dickson by-election was won by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, who defeated a candidate from PAS as well as five independent candidates, including Lau, who received 214 votes.

Negeri Sembilan hits RM250m revenue, highlights Visit 2026 tourism goals

SEREMBAN, May 22 — Negeri Sembilan recorded RM250.66 million in state revenue from January until yesterday, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. He said the amount represents 42.48 per cent of this year's revenue target of RM590 million and is higher than the figure recorded during the same period last year. 'Negeri Sembilan also attracted investments worth RM7.25 billion last year, which led to the creation of more than 4,600 job opportunities,' he said in his speech at the State Government's 2024 Excellent Service Awards (APC), where 519 recipients were honoured today. At the event, Aminuddin also launched the official logo for Visit Negeri Sembilan Year 2026 (TMNS2026), which highlights three key tourism segments: beach tourism, ecotourism, and the cultural heritage of Adat Perpatih. He said the TMNS2026 logo symbolises the state's diverse attractions, including the beach resorts of Port Dickson, the lush rainforests at the tail end of the Titiwangsa Range which offer ecotourism experiences, and the iconic long-roof architecture representing the uniqueness of Adat Perpatih. Aminuddin added that the selection of these tourism products aligns with the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) campaign, which focuses on cultural richness, natural beauty, and Malaysia's global appeal. He emphasised the need to implement various strategic initiatives to achieve the target of 20 million tourist arrivals this year. These include stepping up international promotions through tourism expos, overseas sales missions, and partnerships with both domestic and international travel agents. He also urged all civil servants in the state to serve as ambassadors for TMNS2026 and to continuously improve and reform work processes to enhance the quality of public service delivery. — Bernama

Negeri Sembilan MB Aminuddin to defend PKR veep post, urges unity and integrity ahead of party polls

SEREMBAN, May 10 — Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has confirmed that he will be defending his position as PKR Vice-President in the upcoming party election for the 2025-2028 term, scheduled to take place on May 23 in Johor Bahru. In a Facebook post today, the Negeri Sembilan PKR Leadership Council (MPN) chairman described the PKR 2025 polls as a healthy contest that should be viewed in a broader context, particularly in facing the nation's political challenges and fulfilling the hopes of the people. 'Those elected to leadership positions must be committed to serving as a bridge between the grassroots and the party's top leadership, strengthening the organisational structure, and driving forward the reform agenda that lies at the heart of PKR's struggle. 'I firmly believe the 2025 party election is not merely about positions, but a valuable opportunity to reinforce the party's core mission, reignite the spirit of reform, and strengthen our team to face future challenges, including the upcoming general election,' he said. Aminuddin, who is also Port Dickson PKR Division Chief, expressed hope that party members would remain united, uphold the principles of justice, and elect leaders who can carry the people's voice with integrity and accountability. The central leadership election will be conducted through two methods — physical voting by delegates of the Central Congress, the Youth Congress (Angkatan Muda Keadilan - AMK), and the Women's Congress — at Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and Danga Bay Convention Centre in Johor Bahru. In Sabah and Sarawak, physical voting will be held at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC), Penampang and the Penview Convention Centre, Kuching. Ordinary and additional delegates of the Central Congress, AMK, and Women's Congress who are not required to vote in person will cast their ballots online at the same time via the ADIL app. — Bernama

Museum memorialises Nipah virus epidemic of 27 years ago

The Sg Nipah Time Tunnel Museum, which opened seven years ago, sees about 400 visitors monthly. (Bernama pic) PORT DICKSON : The Nipah virus outbreak that claimed more than 100 lives in several villages around Bukit Pelanduk here about 27 years ago remains a memory difficult to erase in the minds of local residents. To commemorate the tragedy and to ensure the significance of the epidemic is not lost on future generations, the Sungai Nipah Time Tunnel Museum opened in Kampung Baru Sungai Nipah seven years ago. The museum, which displays key moments from the beginning of the outbreak to the recovery process, has received an encouraging response from visitors. 'The event is memorialised in the museum to educate the community about the history and resilience of the community when facing the crisis,' said Cheng Khai Lee, Kampung Baru Sungai Nipah village development and security committee chairman. 'It is interesting for the public to experience. In fact, the father of the museum's chairperson is said to be the first individual to have contracted the virus, which spread by bat-to-human transmission.' Cheng noted that on average, close to 400 people visit the museum every year, including those from outside Negeri Sembilan. 'The school holidays are the busiest,' he added, noting that, as the museum is not open every day, visitors have to make an appointment. The museum contains info on the outbreak and items from that time, including newspaper clippings, photos, and agricultural tools. (Bernama pic) The epidemic wiped out the swine-farming industry in Bukit Pelandok. Cheng, who had been 10 at the time, recalled his mother telling him to pack as they had to move because the village was closed and tightly guarded by police and the military. 'It is bittersweet to remember; many died because of the virus, in addition to the large herds of pigs being culled,' he said. Meanwhile, resident Winnie Lee Le Hoong, 50, said the establishment of the museum was important to raise awareness on the incident and educate the public to ensure it does not recur. Lee, whose uncles had to dispose of livestock, highlighted that the museum contains information on the outbreak and items from that time, including newspaper clippings, photos, and agricultural tools.
