MURDERBOT Season Finale Recap: (S01E10) The Perimeter
Murderbot Season 1 Episode 10, 'The Perimeter,' is a quieter, less action-packed outing, but it's still a fun finale. Thankfully, Season 2 is on the way, although this episode could easily serve as a series finale if necessary. 'The Perimeter' is also lighter on the humor and heavier on the heart. It's got a ton of heart. I'm fascinated by this universe, and I'm excited to see where the overarching narrative takes us. Also, f*ck the Company, y'all. RELATED: Read our recap of the previous Murderbot episode, 'All Systems Red' Murderbot, 'The Perimeter' We open with Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård) waking up after a system reboot. It peers up at two engineers, wondering where its clients are, before said engineers purge its memories. Then, they install a new governor module. So, now it's a blank slate, and it can be controlled again. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 10, 'The Perimeter.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+. Meanwhile, Mensah (Noma Dumezweni), Gurathin (David Dastmalchian), Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu), Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) and Arada (Tattiawna Jones) demand to know where SecUnit is. We see our PresAux crew is back at Port FreeCommerce with all the Corporation Rim f*ckers. The reps inform them that Seccy's location is none of their business. Sue Them Into Oblivion Mensah reminds the Company employees that they provided materials and transportation to GrayCris, who slaughtered the DeltFall crew and tried to kill PresAux. The Company has remained awfully quiet about that fact. Mensah hints at disclosing this information to, well, everyone. One rep counters that there's an NDA clause in every liability agreement. Pin-Lee goes into lawyer mode, insisting that this won't hold up due to the extraordinary nature of the situation. RELATED: Alexander Skarsgård Goes Rogue in Murderbot Trailer Then, the Company lawyer (Neil Whitely) declares that the Company doesn't admit to any wrongdoing 'connected to the incident on Planetary body 898/8712.' Elsewhere, the engineers get SecUnit to perform various commands, including crying like a baby. A Company rep stops them, citing that Seccy must venture out into the station to do its job. Negotiations continue as Mensah orders the Company reps to address her as 'Madam President.' That's my president. The Company asserts that SecUnit is no longer part of the PresAux crew. Mensah counters that, at the very least, Seccy is a material witness to what transpired during the expedition. The lawyer replies that SecUnit is a recording device, at best. Pin-Lee fires back that all the reason for them to see SecUnit — to access evidence. In Conflict Gurathin declares the group will purchase SecUnit. One Company rep insists that it's expensive. Well, so is the massive lawsuit Pin-Lee plans to bring against the Company. Pin-Lee states they'll take SecUnit and half of the Company. Oof. RELATED: David Dastmalchian Joins Apple TV+ Murderbot Adaptation The lawyer claims they can offer our crew a better SecUnit, but not Seccy. Then, he tells Mensah that they discovered that SecUnit had a faulty governor module. Was she aware of this? Mensah remains silent. If the group witnessed abnormal behavior but refused to disclose it, this would conflict with their contract. Next, our heroes learn that Seccy has a new governor module, and its memories have been erased. Elsewhere, Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) runs into the new but not improved SecUnit as it marches alongside other SecUnits toward a protest. Ratthi greets it; however, it doesn't remember him. It prepares to fire on Ratthi before its superior orders it to stand down. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 10, 'The Perimeter.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+. A Glitch After this, Ratthi relays what he witnessed to the gang in their apartment. Mensah insists that there's no way Seccy's data has been erased. Removed, sure, but not erased. Gurathin explains that the Company is sifting through its proprietary data. If they find anything of monetary value, they'll keep it. RELATED: New TV Shows This Week (July 6 – 12) Mensah urges Pin-Lee to continue with their court injunction against the Company. Ratthi persuades Gurathin that they should try to save SecUnit, no matter the cost. At the same time, strikers and police clash during the protest. Those on strike simply want better pay, equal rights and food to put on the table for their families. Understandable. SecUnit and its team descend upon the protestors. It grabs one man's hand and breaks it. During this act of violence, it recalls the massacre it committed in the mining facility. Those violent flashbacks have returned. Seccy glitches and freezes as the protestors kick its sentient construct ass. It understands that violence is morally bad. Downloading Data Later, Gurathin reunites with his ex-dealer, Landers (Sergio Di Zio). Gurathin insists he's not there for a fix. However, Gura knows that Landers has access to SecUnit purged data. Landers apologizes for making Gurathin addicted to drugs — he thought our fave augmented human could handle drugs tailored to be highly addictive. RELATED: On Location: The Lighterman in Apple TV+'s Slow Horses Next, Gura taps into the Company's system. It claims there haven't been any recent SecUnit memory purges. Landers states that he won't find anything because it's all encrypted. However, Gura knows something that Landers doesn't: SecUnit loves downloading premium, quality entertainment. So, Gurathin searches for data on The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon . He discovers thousands of downloads, all of which tie back to our titular bot. Bingpot! Gura plugs in and downloads all of SecUnit's data, including its memories. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 10, 'The Perimeter.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+. Ongoing Investigation Meanwhile, Mensah and Bharadwaj speak to the press about what they experienced during their expedition. Mensah explains that GrayCris inserted combat override modules into DeltFall's SecUnits to make them go rogue and kill, kill, kill. Then, Mensah credits Seccy for saving their lives. Mensah expects SecUnit to play an integral role in the ongoing investigation into the GrayCris/DeltFall/Company mess. RELATED: On Location: The Phoenicia Diner on Apple TV+'s Severance Elsewhere, Company reps prepare to melt SecUnit. After all, it failed to subdue the protestors. I'll never get used to seeing the Ken doll mound on Seccy. Thankfully, Pin-Lee and Ratthi save SecUnit before it's liquefied. Pin-Lee presents their injunction against destroying SecUnit. After this, SecUnit reunites with the PresAux crew. It doesn't recognize any of them. Gurathin returns and plugs into Seccy to transfer all its data and memories. Now, it remembers everything, including that it's missing a number of Sanctuary Moon episodes. It asks what happened. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 10, 'The Perimeter.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+. Seccy Is Back Mensah excitedly tells SecUnit that she will be its guardian. It will accompany them back to the Preservation Alliance. There, it can do whatever it wants. SecUnit asks if it can wear its armor. Instead, the gang dresses it in some new threads. RELATED: Read our Murderbot recaps Next, it watches from afar as various solicitors from DeltFall, the Company and beyond meet with the PresAux crew. Even GrayCris' parent company paid a visit. Presumably, for them to buy SecUnit and/or the lawsuit. Then, they all celebrate with food and drinks, toasting to SecUnit's new life. Seccy looks lost. That evening, SecUnit tries to leave while they're all asleep. Gurathin wakes up, though, to ask it where it's going. Seccy wants to survey the perimeter, as per usual. Gura insists it'll adjust to life in the Preservation Alliance. Everything will work out. SecUnit tells Gura it wants to survey the perimeter. Gura understands, his eyes welling with tears. Seccy plans to escape. I love this scene. Skarsgård and Dastmalchian communicate so much with their eyes. And Gura's uncharacteristically warm here. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 10, 'The Perimeter.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+. The Next Adventure SecUnit wanders through Port FreeCommerce. It notices the next departure is a bot-driven transport ship bound for a distant mining facility. It surreptitiously swipes someone's bag before changing into a mining uniform. Then, Mensah wakes up. She watches as Murderbot departs on the transport ship. She weeps. SecUnit claims it doesn't know what it wants, but it knows it doesn't want to be told what to do — even by its favorite human (Mensah). It smiles as the ship speeds away. MURDERBOT Recap: (S01E09) All Systems Red
Murderbot Season 1 Episode 9, 'All Systems Red,' is a high-octane, action-packed penultimate outing. The PresAux team finally launches an emergency beacon to Port FreeCommerce after implementing SecUnit's wildly dangerous plan. Naturally, everything that can go awry, well, does. It's a delightfully entertaining episode, with some stellar comedic work from our lead. RELATED: Read our recap of the previous Murderbot episode, 'Foreign Object' Murderbot, 'All Systems Red' We open with Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård), Mensah (Noma Dumezweni), Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu) and Gurathin (David Dastmalchian) in the hopper. SecUnit monologues about how humans react differently when faced with the prospect of imminent death. Gurathin isn't a fan of our titular bot's risky plan, but c'est la vie. Mensah asks Murderbot how the odds look. Could they survive its aforementioned risky plan? Initially, SecUnit claims the odds are on the medium to low side. However, Gurathin immediately calls it out for lying. SecUnit corrects itself, stating the odds are low to extremely low. Probably in the basement at this point. SecUnit clearly lied to make Mensah feel better. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 9, 'All Systems Red.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Eye Contact After this, Mensah lands the hopper. SecUnit asks if everyone remembers their jobs. Gurathin sends a verbal jab its way before SecUnit returns fire with a fun callback. 'I noticed you have an issue with eye contact,' it says to Gurathin with a smug expression. Perfection. RELATED: Alexander Skarsgård Goes Rogue in Murderbot Trailer So, SecUnit departs to meet with the GrayCris crew. At the PresAux habitat, Ratthi (Akshay Khanna), Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) and Arada (Tattiawna Jones) scan the area for potential hostiles. Ratthi informs SecUnit that PresAux is safe. It orders Ratthi to keep the channel open. Meanwhile, Pin-Lee and Gurathin complain about Mensah. They both believe that Mensah should've stayed at the habitat. Gurathin remarks that Mensah can be implacable. Pin-Lee adds that, inexplicably, Mensah's inability to yield is hot. Gurathin agrees it's as frustrating as it is hot. Kogi Saves the Day Then, Murderbot tells us that it lied about its plan to the PresAux gang. Why? Because humans have a tendency to lose their sh*t. Pin-Lee must get a drone up in the air so Gurathin could use it as a transponder and hack into GrayCris' HubSystem remotely. Then, our crew will launch the GrayCris beacon and call for help. It got this idea from The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon episode 599, 'Kogi Saves the Day.' A bona fide classic, it tells us. RELATED: David Dastmalchian Joins Apple TV+ Murderbot Adaptation After this, SecUnit encounters the GrayCris team. It introduces itself to Rita (Amanda Brugel), the GrayCris leader. Her right-hand man (Christopher Cordell) attempts to override SecUnit's governor module. Well, too bad for you — it did it first. It calls GrayCris out for attempting to hack it to make it kill the PresAux crew. Rita asks to speak to Murderbot's clients. However, SecUnit insists it has a plan. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 9, 'All Systems Red.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Next, it admits it's gone rogue. Might as well get that out of the way. SecUnit explains that, initially, its clients were too self-absorbed to see that it was rogue. It claims Gurathin was the only one to understand the threat it posed before producing a head from its satchel. Yes, it's the head of the SecUnit killed by that creature in episode seven. Gotta love this intimidation tactic. Destroyed Inventory Then, Murderbot divulges that its clients are sabotaging GrayCris' mission. It offers to help Rita capture them and get the information she wants. In exchange, Murderbot asks that the GrayCris team take it with them on the pickup ship. However, Rita must list it as 'destroyed inventory.' Mensah and the others are incredulous. Why would SecUnit betray them? Sure, it's rogue, but still. RELATED: New TV Shows This Week (June 29 – July 5) Rita agrees to SecUnit's terms. Of course, if it's lying to them, they'll destroy it. Murderbot urges Rita to open a satellite link and connect to the PresAux HubSystem. Murderbot loudly claims it'll fool 'those idiots' into keeping the connection open. Now, the PresAux team can hear everything Murderbot's saying. SecUnit reiterates its willingness to hand over its clients, but only after Rita marks it as destroyed. Next, Murderbot orders Bharadwaj to lower the firewall to give GrayCris access to the HubSystem. Ratthi protests at this, claiming it wasn't part of the plan. Bharadwaj and Arada decide to trust it, though, and they help Ratthi lower the firewall. Then, Pin-Lee and Gurathin release the drone that locates the GrayCris beacon. After this, Arada sends the security codes to Gurathin. Four Minutes and 46 Seconds Pin-Lee patches in to Mensah, asking for pickup. Gurathin attempts to hack GrayCris' HubSystem to launch their beacon. Gurathin informs Pin-Lee that the drone is now connected to the beacon. Meanwhile, Rita's right-hand man tells Murderbot that they've listed it as destroyed inventory. Rita orders it to disclose its clients' location. RELATED: On Location: The Lighterman in Apple TV+'s Slow Horses Then, SecUnit replies that the PresAux team is at the launchpad, having patched into their beacon. Way to throw your humans under the bus. It mentions that one of them is a highly advanced, augmented human. Instead of saying Gurathin, though, it claims this person is named Shagamin. This is a character from Sanctuary Moon . Clearly, SecUnit's betrayal is part of the plan. Rita orders SecUnit to accompany them to the launchpad. Gurathin and Pin-Lee realize that immolation is inevitable for Murderbot and the GrayCris crew. They'll die when they come in contact with the launching beacon. Ratthi urges Gurathin to stop the launch. Gurathin counters that if he does this, he can't get back into GrayCris' HubSystem. They have four minutes and 46 seconds to launch. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 9, 'All Systems Red.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Boldness Is All After this, Murdebot and GrayCris land the hopper within the perimeter of the beacon. Elsewhere, Pin-Lee and Gurathin watch in horror as a large bird takes out the drone. Gurathin reveals that the drone can no longer trigger the beacon because it didn't finish the data upload. Pin-Lee frantically pings Murderbot to inform it that the beacon will no longer launch. Gurathin decides to haul ass to the GrayCris habitat to hack their system from there. RELATED: On Location: The Phoenicia Diner on Apple TV+'s Severance Mensah takes matters into her own hands, flying the hopper to the GrayCris beacon. At the same time, Rita and her team fail to find the PresAux crew at the launchpad. Murderbot tries small talk on for size. Hey, it's watched enough TV to understand the basic concept of it. It asks Rita where she's from and if the team likes it on this planet. SecUnit attempting to stall is hilarious. Her right-hand man admits he hates it here. SecUnit asks him if he wants to 'clasp hands' before whirling around and hurtling itself off a small hill, shouting, 'Boldness is all!' Meanwhile, Pin-Lee and Gurathin duck behind some equipment after spotting a GrayCris surveyor moving through the habitat. Mensah parks the hopper at the launchpad and introduces herself to Rita. Gurathin finally hacks GrayCris' HubSystem. Unfortunately, that surveyor catches him in the act. Thankfully, Pin-Lee swoops in and, well, kills him. They didn't mean to commit murder, though. The Final Fight Rita asks why Mensah, a Planetary Admin, is on this sh*tty planet. Mensah claims it all boils down to two words: alien remnants. Rita counters that it's illegal to exploit or extract alien remnants. They must report them to the proper authorities. Mensah fires back that said remnants could be valuable enough to justify killing people — like GrayCris did to DeltFall. And their attempts to take out PresAux. RELATED: Read our Murderbot recaps Pin-Lee pings Mensah, informing her that they've successfully triggered the beacon. One minute countdown. Mensah offers to give Rita the data from the alien remnants in exchange for SecUnit. Rita would rather torture it out of her, though. SecUnit offers to torture Mensah itself. It's quite good at it. Then, Rita's right-hand man realizes Murderbot has been quoting Sanctuary Moon this whole time. Suddenly, Murderbot initiates a fight. The GrayCris SecUnits fire back at it as Mensah takes cover. SecUnit grabs Rita's right-hand man and shields itself with his body. The GrayCris SecUnits cannot shoot a client. They're not rogue like it is. However, one of the other GrayCris workers kills him. She attempts to escape in the hopper alone, but Rita shoots her. Meanwhile, the GrayCris SecUnits beat the snot out of our Murderbot. It floods their systems with hours of premium TV, though, to distract them. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 9, 'All Systems Red.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ The Launch and the Fall Next, SecUnit grabs Mensah, and they run as the beacon launches. The fiery explosion incinerates Rita and her team. Murderbot shields Mensah as they leap off a cliff. Murderbot situates itself so that it absorbs the landing. After their fall, Mensah thanks SecUnit. Gurathin and Pin-Lee reunite with them. They embrace Mensah. However, SecUnit ain't lookin' so hot. Liquid leaks out of its mouth. Is this the end of Murderbot? Murderbot drops new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+. MURDERBOT Recap: (S01E07) Complementary Species
Murderbot Season 1 Episode 7, 'Complementary Species,' finds our humans debating whether they should dump SecUnit in the middle of nowhere or keep it. Will it inevitably kill them or continue to protect them? The episode is also a clever meditation on the price of human life, and whether it's okay to take one if your own life hangs in the balance. 'Complementary Species' is bolstered by solid performances and a nuanced display of character dynamics. Plus, that cliffhanger will hopefully yield fruit in the form of narrative answers in the remaining three episodes. RELATED: Read our recap of the previous Murderbot episode, 'Command Feed' Murderbot, 'Complementary Species' We open with a flashback to the PresAux crew on Port FreeCommerce one month earlier. They're all having dinner while playing an honesty game. Everyone's airing their grievances, mending fences and forcing those skeletons out of the closet. Bharadwaj (Tamara Podemski) admits she told Pin-Lee (Sabrina Wu) that she had feelings for them. She apologizes to them for making them uncomfortable, which Pin-Lee accepts. Then, it's Gurathin's (David Dastmalchian) turn to share a deep, dark truth. Remember, we can talk about this! Gurathin discloses that he used to be a spy for the Corporation Rim. The Corporation Rim induced Gurathin to be addicted to a number of substances. Unfortunately, only they possessed the formulas for them. His job was to acquire sensitive information that the CR could use to destroy their adversaries and further their reach. Mensah (Noma Dumezweni) was his target. At this point, Gurathin considered ending his life. Then, he met Mensah. He told her everything — being a spy, his addictions. And Mensah forgave him. She supported his desire to leave it all behind. What a beautiful, understated performance from Dastmalchian here. Thankfully, Bharadwaj, Pin-Lee, Arada (Tattiawna Jones) and Ratthi (Akshay Khanna) still love him anyway. RELATED: Alexander Skarsgård Goes Rogue in Murderbot Trailer After this confession, Gurathin and Mensah have an aside. He gives her the cold, hard truth: She's naive. Also, this expedition isn't a good idea. Mensah counters that they'll have a SecUnit with them. However, that makes Gurathin feel worse. He doesn't trust the Corporation Rim, and knows better than anyone what they're capable of. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 7, 'Complementary Species.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Pack It Up In the present, Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård) orders our crew to finish packing so they can depart in the hopper. Leebeebee's employer is undoubtedly close. Our titular bot can't believe its risk assessment module didn't clock the late Leebeebee as a hostile. Gurathin should probably spend more time in the med bay as he's still pretty injured, but there's no time for that now. SecUnit barrels into the habitat, its helmet on, and orders the crew to pile into the hopper before they lose their lives. Not by it, of course. Whoever employed Leebeebee has it out for the PresAux gang. RELATED: David Dastmalchian Joins Apple TV+ Murderbot Adaptation Later, in the hopper, Ratthi strikes up a conversation with Murderbot to assess its current state. Its inner monologue tells us that the group's 'unwarranted' distrust and fear of it is getting on its nerves. It saved their lives. Why can't they be more grateful? You heard it here first — exploding heads saves lives. Leaving on a Hopper Ratthi admits, in his amiable, disarming way, that the crew is startled. He not-so-subtly wonders if Murderbot was aiming for Gurathin's head, not Leebeebee's. SecUnit states that if it wanted Gurathin dead, he would be, well, dead. So, there's that. Arada asks Ratthi if SecUnit showed any remorse for killing Leebeebee. Well, not exactly. Mensah lands the hopper in a new location on the planet. Murderbot decides to check the perimeter, which is its favorite thing to do — and a means of getting away from the humans. Before it goes, it remarks that Gurathin's body temperature is spiking. Bharadwaj adds that he has a fever. He needs medical care. RELATED: New TV Shows This Week (June 15 – 21) After it leaves, the PresAux team engages in a moral debate. Pin-Lee states that, yes, Murderbot defended them. However, what if it turns on them? It seems inevitable at this point. Mensah counters that she's more concerned about the humans trying to kill them. Mensah adds that it spent years in forced labor and subjugation. Of course it wants autonomy. Wouldn't you? MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 7, 'Complementary Species.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Fine Outside, SecUnit wonders what might happen if it stays in the woods forever, just binge-watching its favorite shows. It could allow itself to shut down organically. It admits that it's quite confused at the moment. Meanwhile, Gurathin asks Mensah if she has a crush on Murderbot. I mean, it does look exactly like Alexander Skarsgård… Then, SecUnit reunites with Mensah. She asks it how it's doing. Our sentient construct had hoped it wouldn't have to answer inane questions since it confessed to hacking its governor module. However, it decides to opt for a very human response: 'Fine.' RELATED: On Location: The Lighterman in Apple TV+'s Slow Horses The others venture outside. Pin-Lee inquires about Murderbot's security methods. It rattles off a retort about Pin-Lee's mission to litigate the Corporation Rim to hell, proving it listens in on their conversations. Also, SecUnit is extra sassy in this episode, and I love it. We Can Talk About This Mensah makes an executive decision — they're gonna hash this out now. We can talk about this. The group, sans Gurathin, encircles SecUnit. They join hands. SecUnit refuses to partake. Mensah asks it to lower its helmet. She explains that she wants the team to 'get past the violence.' She believes that SecUnit removing its helmet will convince the group that it's trying to help. This does the trick. We see its face again. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 7, 'Complementary Species.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ After this, SecUnit orders everyone to board the hopper. Suddenly, a two-headed creature bursts from the ground, launching itself at the hopper. Murderbot trains its weapon on the beast. However, another, different creature emerges from the other side. And just when our crew thinks the monsters will kill each other, they start mating. Arada is fascinated. She remarks that they're 'complementary species.' RELATED: On Location: The Phoenicia Diner on Apple TV+'s Severance Gotta love it when two alien creatures f*ck on top of a ship. Once the lovers depart, the PresAux team heads back outside. They discover egg sacs on the side of the hopper. Mensah says they can leave them there for now. Please Remain Calm (or Don't) Suddenly, a top-of-the-line SecUnit launches itself toward our SecUnit. It jammed our bot's threat assessment module. 'Please remain calm,' the enemy says as it kicks Murderbot. The crew attempts to defend themselves and protect Murderbot. Ratthi throws a spear. Arada shoves the hostile, and Pin-Lee kicks it. Murderbot multitasks here, simultaneously attacking the other SecUnit while protecting the humans from it. MURDERBOT Season 1 Episode 7, 'Complementary Species.' Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ Then, the enemy SecUnit fires on the egg sacs, taking some of them out. The two-headed creature returns. It rips the SecUnit's head off before grabbing the remainder of the egg sacs and burrowing back underground. The gang celebrates. Seccy does it again. RELATED: Read our Murderbot recaps Next, Gurathin collapses. His fever is rising. The PresAux team decides to return to the habitat to get him proper medical care. (They're also still a month out from the Corporation Rim arriving to take them home.) Murderbot believes this is unwise. The habitat will be crawling with hostiles, especially since it killed Leebeebee. Mensah makes another executive decision. They're going back to the habitat whether it likes this choice or not. It can join them or stay. They take care of their own (even Sanctuary Moon haters like Gurathin). Murderbot drops new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+.
