Eco-Yoga: How Conscious Practice Can Heal Both You and the Planet
Last Updated: Yoga isn't just a path to inner peace, it's a mindful journey that nurtures the Earth through sustainable choices and daily intention. Yoga isn't just a path to inner peace—it's also a way to nurture the world around you. Embracing eco-yoga means aligning your wellness routine with environmentally conscious choices. It's about understanding that your daily habits—from the clothes you wear to the food you eat—have an impact on the Earth. 'Yoga teaches us to live with awareness, simplicity, and compassion," says Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, author and founder of Akshar Yoga Kendraa. 'When you heal yourself, you begin to heal the planet. Yoga encourages a minimalist lifestyle and reminds us that we are a part of nature—not separate from it." From switching to sustainable yoga gear to adopting a plant-based diet, eco-yoga is about taking mindful steps toward balance, both within and beyond. 'It's not just physical exercise," Akshar explains. 'Practising yoga is a sacred offering to the Earth. It cultivates deep respect for all living beings and promotes a way of life that's gentle on the planet." 6 Simple Eco-Yoga Practices to Embrace Daily 1. Healing Walk Begin your morning with a barefoot walk on grass. Extend your arms shoulder-width apart, palms facing each other, and sync your breath with your steps. Start with 2–3 minutes, gradually increasing to 10. It grounds your body and centers your mind. 2. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) From all fours, curl your toes under and lift your hips to form an inverted V. Try to press your heels toward the ground. Hold for 10 seconds. This pose improves blood circulation and helps calm the nervous system. 3. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) Stand tall and place your right foot on your left inner thigh. Raise your arms overhead with palms together. Gaze at a fixed point and hold for 5 seconds. This pose enhances balance, stability, and concentration. 5. Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) On hands and knees, inhale as you arch your back and lift your chest (cow), and exhale as you round your spine and tuck your chin (cat). This sequence improves spinal flexibility and boosts energy flow. 6. Scorpion Pose (Vrschikasana) (Advanced) Start in a forearm stand. Walk your feet in, then kick up one leg at a time. Once stable, bend your knees and bring your feet toward your head. Hold for 5 seconds. This challenging pose builds strength and sharpens mental focus. By integrating these mindful movements and eco-conscious choices into your routine, you not only deepen your yoga practice but also contribute to the well-being of the Earth. Because true balance begins when we honour both body and planet.

Fire up your core with these easy but effective yoga asanas
Maintaining a strong core is an often-ignored but truly essential health hack. It plays a central role in nearly every movement your body makes. It helps maintain the perfect posture, increase your balance, reduces injury risk and more. But did you know that a gym membership isn't the only way to get a strong core? Even yoga can help. Riya Vyas, founder of Unalome Yoga, shared three asanas you can try to fire up your core easily and effectively. Postures like Boat Pose (Navasana) and Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana), featured in this reel, engage the deep abdominal muscles, support spinal alignment, and improve posture. Variations of the boat pose further challenge the body, enhancing endurance and muscular control. Unlike high-impact workouts, yoga strengthens the core while minimising strain on the joints. Watch the video here: A post shared by Riya Vyas | Yoga & wellness expert (@riyavyasyoga) Boat Pose (Navasana): It is a core-strengthening yoga posture that builds balance and stability by engaging the abdominal muscles. It also helps improve concentration and tones the hips and spine. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana): Setu Bandhasana, or Bridge Pose, strengthens the back, glutes, and hamstrings while gently opening the chest and spine. It also helps calm the mind and relieve stress and mild depression. Riya tells us that in a world increasingly dominated by sedentary routines and screen time, maintaining core strength is more important than ever. 'A strong core is not just about toned abs—it forms the foundation for overall stability, balance, and functional movement. It keeps your spine and organs protected. Yoga, with its mindful approach and holistic postures, offers a powerful and sustainable way to build core strength.' She adds, 'A strong core is key to preventing lower back pain, improving athletic performance, and enhancing daily movement—from lifting groceries to standing for long hours. It also supports better breathing and digestion, making it vital for overall well-being.'

Pranayama routines that can help you kick the butt: How to control smoking urges
Written by Vikram Manikya Cigarettes are a gateway drug. Scientists have identified tobacco addiction as the gateway to hard drugs like ganja (cannabis or marijuana) and cocaine. Hence, we cannot take tobacco addiction lightly. The International Journal of Yoga has researched the benefits of practising pranayamas on nicotine craving and withdrawal symptoms and found that pranayamas help reduce both of them. Here are a few effective routines to supplement the journey of de-addiction. Nadi Shodhan Pranayama ⦁ Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, preferably in Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose). ⦁ Relax your shoulders and body. ⦁ Place your left hand on your left knee with fingers in 'Chin Mudra', where you gently touch the thumb and index finger. You bring forward the rest of the three fingers. ⦁ Place the tips of your index and middle fingers at the centre of your eyebrows. ⦁ Place your ring and little fingers on your left nostril. ⦁ Place your thumb on the right nostril. ⦁ The ring and little fingers will be used to open and close the left nostril. ⦁ The thumb will be used to open and close the right nostril. ⦁ Take a normal breath with both nostrils, position your fingers — thumb on the right, index and middle fingers in between your eyebrows, and ring and little fingers on the left. ⦁ Breathe out through the left nostril by closing your right nostril with your thumb. ⦁ Now, breathe in through the left nostril and close it with your ring and little fingers after completing inhalation. ⦁ Remove your thumb to exhale through the right nostril. Keep your left nostril closed with your ring and little fingers. ⦁ Inhale through the right nostril and close it with your thumb after completing inhalation. ⦁ Breathe out through the left nostril by closing your right nostril with your thumb. This marks the completion of one round of 'nadi shodhan pranayama'. ⦁ Continue alternating nostrils, inhaling through one nostril and exhaling through the other. ⦁ After each exhalation, remember to breathe in through the same nostril. ⦁ Complete nine such rounds by breathing through both nostrils alternately. ⦁ Continue taking long and deep normal breaths, effortlessly. Bhastrika Pranayama ⦁ Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, preferably in Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose). ⦁ Relax your shoulders and body. ⦁ Make fists and fold your arms. Place them close to your shoulders Bhastrika Pranayama 1 ⦁ Inhale deeply with both your nostrils. Fill your lungs completely. ⦁ Raise both arms and unfold your fists. ⦁ Exhale forcefully through both nostrils. Empty your lungs completely. Bhastrika Pranayama 2 ⦁ Bring your arms next to your shoulders. ⦁ Close your fists. Settle into the beginning pose. ⦁ Repeat 20 rounds. ⦁ The breathing should be rapid and forceful. ⦁ Relax with palms on your thighs, open towards the ceiling. ⦁ Take a few deep, normal breaths. ⦁ Continue for 2 more rounds. Bhramari Pranayama ⦁ Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, preferably in Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose). ⦁ Close your eyes, and keep a gentle smile on your face. ⦁ Place your index finger on the cartilage between your cheek and ear as depicted in the image below: ⦁ Take a normal, deep breath in, and as you breathe out, gently press the cartilage with your index finger. ⦁ Make a low humming sound like a bee while you press it in and out with your index finger. ⦁ High-pitched humming is always better than low or medium pitch. ⦁ Breathe normally and continue this pattern for 3-4 rounds. How Much 20 Actors Get In Residuals
Ryan McCartan appeared on Disney Channel's Liv and Maddie for four years, playing basketball star Diggie Smalls. In May, he took to Instagram to share a residual check from the series, showing he was paid just 41 cents by the network. Before becoming a rapper, Drake was famously a child star, portraying Jimmy Brooks on the Canadian series Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2001 to 2009. In 2017, he posted a residual check on Instagram for a mere $8.25. The Friends cast — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc — reportedly make $20 million a year from reruns, with Matthew's earnings seemingly going to his estate since his tragic 2023 death. In 2021, Billy Porter told the PA news agency that his residual checks were just "six cents." He apparently doesn't get "any more money" from Pose, the series that launched him to fame and earned him numerous accolades, including an Emmy, even though it continues to air on Hulu and Disney+. Kimiko Glenn once received a paycheck for just $27, despite starring in over 40 episodes of Orange Is the New Black. "We did not get paid very well ever," she stated. In 2014, Bob Gunton told the Wall Street Journal that he still receives residuals from 1994's The Shawshank Redemption. While he said they weren't "huge" payments, they were "steady, close to six figures by the film's 10th anniversary in 2004." "I suspect my daughter, years from now, will still be getting checks," he said. Drake Bell and Josh Peck apparently make "zero" money from Drake & Josh reruns. As Josh told the BFFs podcast, "It aired from 2004 to 2007, but — fun fact — because kids' TV doesn't have residuals, it's still on every day." Ray Romano reportedly earns up to $18 million annually from reruns of his hit CBS show Everybody Loves Raymond. The series aired from 1996 to 2005 and continues to run on Peacock, Paramount+, and several other networks today. As John Mahoney told the Chicago Tribune in 2004, he made "a ton of money" from Frasier — so much so that he didn't have to "worry" about his "next job." The outlet reported that John intended to live off his show earnings and residuals after the show's conclusion, and although the exact amount was not disclosed, it was said that John had "enough in the bank to ensure he never has to work again on something he'd rather not do." John died in 2018 with only a few more television appearances after Frasier, but with a reported net worth of $16 million. Mandy Moore said she's received "very tiny, like, 81-cent checks" from This Is Us streaming on Hulu — and sometimes, less than that. She memorably played Rebecca Pearson on the series for six years before its conclusion in 2022. Kendrick Sampson portrayed Nathan Campbell on HBO's Insecure from 2018 to 2021, and in 2023, he revealed he received $86 from over 50 residual checks. "This is that bullshit," he reportedly said. "And I KNOW people are struggling much more than me!" During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Aaron Paul claimed he wasn't making any money from Breaking Bad Netflix residuals. "I don't get a piece from Netflix on Breaking Bad to be totally honest, and that's insane to me,' he told Entertainment Weekly Canada on a picket line. "I think a lot of these streamers know that they have been getting away with not paying people a fair wage, and now it's time to pony up." Robert Pine, who has appeared in hundreds of episodes of shows like CHiPs and The Bold and the Beautiful, told the Chicago Tribune that his residual royalties added up to "several thousands [of] dollars" a year, allowing him to send his daughter to UCLA and his son to college. In the same article, Art Hoffman from The Wonder Years discussed his residual earnings and said that although his time on the show was brief, it was still rewarding. According to Art, he'd even been able to pay for several expenses just from a recent TV marathon. "That marathon did me well," he said. "It helped me pay my rent. It is helping me pay for school." Art had reportedly only appeared in three episodes as a student and Winnie's boyfriend before leaving the industry to attend Colorado State University. Reece Thompson — aka the "little Irish boy" from Titanic — said that in the immediate years after the film's release, he received residual checks "in the thousands." By 2018, however, that number had dwindled to somewhere between $100 and $300 a year. According to her son Brandon, Pamela Anderson, who played C.J. Parker on Baywatch from 1992 to 1997, makes $4,000 annually in residuals. "That's a crime," he said. Josie Davis appeared in over 100 episodes of the '80s sitcom Charles in Charge, and yet, one of her recent residual checks was for a meager $6.60. She posted the check on Facebook and sarcastically said, "Oh my God, look at all my residuals! The pages are even longer than I imagined. Boy, no wonder everyone thinks I'm so wealthy. I made a lot of money on Charles in Charge!" Finally, one time, Robert Carradine from Lizzie McGuire allegedly received a $0 residual check. He said he believed it was from 2003's The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

Dealer gets 19 years in prison for providing drugs that killed prominent NYC transgender activist
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City drug dealer who admitted providing the fentanyl-laced heroin that killed a prominent transgender activist was sentenced Tuesday to 19 years in federal prison, prosecutors said. Michael Kuilan, 45, of Brooklyn, was also ordered to pay $24,482 in restitution and forfeit $30,000 and a seized firearm. 'Cecilia Gentili was tragically poisoned from fentanyl-laced heroin,' U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella said in a statement. 'Today, the perpetrators who sold the deadly drugs to Gentili are being held accountable.' Kuilan had three prior state felony convictions related to selling heroin before he pleaded guilty to the federal charges last year, according to prosecutors. He faced up to 20 years in prison for the drug distribution charge and up to 35 years for unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon at his sentencing in Brooklyn federal court. Kuilan's lawyer didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment. His co-defendant, Antonio Venti, 53, of Long Island, was sentenced in February to five years in federal prison after also pleading guilty to the same drug offense last year. Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. Prosecutors said text messages, cell site data, and other evidence showed that Kuilan had supplied Venti with drugs that he then sold to Gentili. The 52-year-old Brooklyn resident was found dead in her bedroom from the combined effect of fentanyl, heroin, xylazine and cocaine on Feb. 6, 2024 — the day after purchasing the drugs, according to prosecutors. The former sex worker had been a leading advocate for other transgender people, as well as sex workers and people with HIV. She also acted in the FX television series 'Pose,' about the underground ballroom dance scene in the 1980s and 1990s. Gentili's well-attended funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan drew outrage from some in the Catholic community, including from the venerable church's own pastor.
