Morgantown Post 2 falls to Beckley Bash 5-4 to bow out of Legion State Tournament

MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 head coach Jacob Goodnight didn't think his team played a clean game on Friday night in an 11-4 defeat to Charleston Post 65. That effort seemed to spill over slightly on Saturday as Post 2 fell to Beckley Bash Post 35, 5-4, in an elimination game under the sun. With the defeat, Morgantown's summer comes to a close on Day Three of the 2025 American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Both teams earned ten hits in the contest. The Bash was led by Ashton Cochran, who went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Mason Chaney also secured a three-hit game for Morgantown in four at-bats with two RBIs. 'It was a good game of baseball, but our errors came back to hurt us in the end,' Goodnight said. 'They made some errors also, but they got out of the jams when they needed to, and our mistakes seemed to carry over for a couple of batters, and they eventually got runs out of that. We put that three spot up but let them respond by doing the same thing, just a tough day for us today.' Beckley took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning but Post 2 responded in the top of the third as Eli Boggs doubled home Brance McCune to tie the game. Kane Williams singled to put two men on for Morgantown, and Chaney delivered with a two-run single to give Post 2 a 3-1 lead. But as Goodnight alluded to, Beckley punched back with a three-run inning of its own in the third to pull ahead again, 4-3. Post 2 came up empty in the fourth, and that opened the door for the Bash to extend the lead, 5-3, on a fielder's choice in the infield. Morgantown cut the lead in half on a single by Nate Wolfe that brought Williams around to score, but a double play ended the inning, and Post 2 would fail to find the equalizing run before it was too late. 'It took a while for us to bring it together this summer, but everyone got comfortable down the stretch and we won some games how we knew we could,' Goodnight said. 'We were a little bit tight this weekend in the tournament, but these guys let their talent show the last few weeks, and that's why we were able to be successful. We just asked them to play hard and keep showing up, that's all you can do.' Post 2 falls to Charleston Post 65, 11-4, faces elimination game Saturday against Beckley

MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 managed only four hits and committed three errors on Friday night in an 11-4 loss to Charleston Post 65 on Day Two of the 2025 WV American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Post 2 outfielder Kane Williams continued his hot streak at the plate with two doubles to lead Morgantown, but Charleston tallied 11 hits to score their 11 runs and advance to the 2-0 game against Wheeling Post 1 on Saturday night. Morgantown will square off with Beckley Bash Post 32 on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in an elimination game. Charleston starting pitcher Trisdon Ciampanella tossed 4.1 innings with only one hit allowed and ten strikeouts on Friday night. 'He (Ciampanella) threw a lot of pitches we weren't ready for,' Post 2 head coach Jacob Goonight said. 'He didn't have his fastball to start the game and was getting us to swing at pitches that were tough to hit. I don't think we honed in on our approach until the fourth inning when he left the game. We didn't change anything or try to adjust enough to win that game.' Charleston broke the ice in the third inning as Landon Nida singled home a run to give his team a lead it wouldn't surrender. Five more runs came for Post 65 in the top of the fourth on only three hits. Luke Buckner doubled, scoring two runs before an error allowed two more. Grant Barclay added a final one in the inning with a single. Post 2 got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Parker Jeffries scored on a wild pitch. Mason Chaney and Nate Wolfe then each singled home a run to cut the lead in half, 6-3. But Post 65 scored another run in the top of the sixth and added four more in the seventh to slam the door on the tournament hosts. 'It started from the bats for us, when you aren't hitting well, it feeds into other areas of the game,' Goodnight said. 'It just wasn't a clean game for us. We preach clean, fun baseball, and I don't think we played the opposite of that today.' Williams' walk-off double lifts Post 2 over Parkersburg Post 15, 5-4

MORGANTOWN – Stepping to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on base and the game knotted at four, Kane Williams wanted a fastball, and he got one. The Post 2 outfielder drove the first pitch he saw in his fifth at-bat on Thursday night to left-center field, scoring the game-winning run as Parker Jeffries scored from second base, giving Post 2 a 5-4, walk-off win over Parkersburg Post 15 in the opening round of the 2025 WV American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Williams finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including the game-winner — his first career walk-off hit. 'I knew he was going to bring a ball up eventually; he was missing low,' Williams said. 'I got my weight back and shot it to the opposite field. Attacking the early fastball is my approach; it's going to be the best pitch you get every at-bat.' With the win, Post 2 advances in the winner's bracket and will face Charleston Post 65 at 7 p.m. Friday at Dale Miller Field. Post 2's Parker Jeffries sparked the ninth-inning rally with a one-out single, and Brance McCune reached on a dropped grounder to shortstop, setting the stage for Williams. Strong relief pitching kept the game tied, giving Post 2 a chance in the ninth. Hayden Jones threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball after a rough sixth, and Tommy Montague closed it out with two shutout innings, striking out two. 'Tommy is our guy in a big spot,' said Post 2 coach Jacob Goodnight. 'Hayden gave us exactly what we needed too — he's a college arm and really stepped up.' Post 2 jumped out early with a two-run first inning, capped by a sac fly from Montague and an RBI single by Nate Wolfe. Wolfe later added a solo homer in the fourth, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Post 15 battled back with a pair of runs in the third and a game-tying bloop double from Carter Davis in the sixth. But they were shut down the rest of the way. McCune, who made a diving catch in right field in the eighth and reached base to help set up the winning run, drew praise from Goodnight. 'We don't give Brance enough credit,' he said. 'He does the little things right every time, so we kind of expect him to step up in those moments because we know that he is capable. Honestly, he is often overlooked by many people, including our staff. He just plays hard every day and comes to the ballpark to do his job.'

Post 2 set to host American Legion State Baseball Tournament this week at Mylan Park

MORGANTOWN – There will be plenty of baseball played this week at Mylan Park as the American Legion Senior State Baseball Tournament will be held on Dale Miller Field beginning Thursday, with the championship set for Monday next week. Morgantown Post 2 will host the eight-team event, as two teams from each of the four Areas across the state qualified for the state tournament. Beckley Bash, Post 60 Knights, Clarksburg Post 13, Wheeling Post 1, Berkeley Post 14, Charleston Post 65, and Parkersburg Post 15 will join Post 2 to battle for the state championship and a spot in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament set for August 6-10 in Hanover, Maryland. Beckley Bash and Post 60 Knight (Berkeley) will open the day at 10:00 a.m., followed by Berkeley Post 14 and Charleston Post 65 at 1:00 p.m. Clarksburg Post 13 and Wheeling Post 1 will begin the evening session at 4:00 p.m. Morgantown will face off against Parkersburg Post 15 in the opening round of the tournament, a team against which they split a pair of games earlier in the summer, with a 9-2 victory followed by a 4-0 defeat. 'The challenge this week is going to be the week itself,' Post 2 head coach Jacob Goodnight said. 'It's going to be a grind. We have to take each game and day one at a time. We've been fortunate enough to make it to the end of the week for the past two seasons, and I think the coaches can help our guys take their recovery seriously so we are able to make it deep into the tournament.' Post 2 enters the week as the Area 2 champions, having gone 3-0 last week in the Area 2 tournament. Morgantown managed 21 runs in three games, but Goodnight says it's their pitching that can make the difference for them this week. 'On the mound is where we need to be locked in the most,' he said. 'We need our guys to be throwing strikes from the start. When we've seen success this season, it's been because we didn't give our opponents free bases. When we make teams earn every single run, we are tough to outhit. The Area tournament gave us the opportunity to play some excellent teams, and showed us that we can win the tough games. Having some momentum going into the week will help us play a little more free and looser.' Another advantage for Post 2 is being on its home field at Dale Miller. 'Being at home is awesome,' Goodnight said. 'We get to come to our ballpark every day, and our fans will continue to come out and support. We get to sleep in our own beds after a long day, while the other teams will be in hotels all week. We will get to relax at home and recharge for the next day when we aren't at the ballpark. We are looking forward to the opportunity that comes with this week.'

Post 2 captures Area 2 tournament title over Clarksburg Post 13, 4-3

MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 secured the Area 2 title on Thursday night with a grinding 4-3 victory over a scrappy Clarksburg Post 13 squad. With the win, Post 2 advances to face Parkersburg Post 15 in the WV State American Legion Baseball tournament Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Post 13 will play Wheeling Post 1 in an elimination game at 4 p.m. The state tournament will be hosted by Post 2 at Mylan Park. It marks Clarksburg Post 13's first trip to the state tournament since 2008. Grayson Campbell earned the win for Post 2, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on three hits, with seven walks and four strikeouts. Tommy Montague recorded two outs without allowing a hit, and Judd Messerly pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Clarksburg managed just three hits—one each from Bombardiere, Ferrell, and Jovanni Minnocci. At the plate, Morgantown was led by Brance McCune, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kane Williams finished 1-for-2, Eli Boggs went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Daniel Grabo and Sam Watson each added a hit. Clarksburg struck first, scoring twice in the opening inning. Whiteman walked, Bombardiere singled, and Ferrell's grounder up the middle scored a run after a throwing error. Ferrell was caught stealing, but Bombardiere dashed home during the rundown to make it 2-0. Morgantown answered right back. McCune singled to left, Boggs walked, and a sac fly moved both runners up. Montague was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Wolfe drew a walk to make it 2-1. 'They're so good,' Lehasky said. 'You think line drives are going to fall and they're right there. Their outfield reads the ball well. Their infield is solid. That's a small college team—they made the plays when they had to.' Post 2's defense shined again in the second as Jeffries made a diving catch in shallow center and McCune followed with another sprawling catch in right to complete a 1-2-3 frame. Watson walked to lead off the bottom half, and pinch runner Logan Waldo advanced on a sac bunt. McCune's RBI single tied the game at 2-2. In the fourth, Jeffries walked, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Boggs' RBI single to left. Williams walked, and a double steal advanced both runners. Montague's bunt resulted in an out at first, but Boggs sprinted home on the throw and slid in safely: 4-2 Post 2. Post 13 threatened in the sixth inning. Trailing 4-2, Brogan Medina drew a leadoff walk, and Jovanni Minnocci followed with a one-out single to right. A passed ball moved both runners up. Dominico Minnocci walked to load the bases, and a bases-loaded walk to Nate Whiteman cut the deficit to 4-3. That prompted a pitching change, and as usual, Montague answered the call. He got the next batter to roll into a 6-4-3 double play that ended the threat and preserved the lead. 'In this tournament, Tommy has been the guy we go to,' Post 2 coach Jacob Goodnight said. 'Yesterday, he hit the ball that got us back in it. Today, he pitches out of a jam. The dugout feeds off that. He's not afraid of big moments.' Williams added a two-out single in the sixth, but a sharp lineout ended the inning. Still, the early damage—and Montague's late relief—was enough to send Post 2 into the state tournament with momentum.
