PMAY-U extended till the end of this year, to benefit 29K people

BHUBANESWAR : In a major relief for the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U), the state government has received an extension for implementation of the old scheme till December 2025, paving way for construction of nearly 29,000 dwelling units. Sources in the Housing and Urban Development department said of the 1.72 lakh dwelling units sanctioned under the beneficiary-led construction (BLC) vertical of the PMAY-U scheme, work of a staggering 18,571 units have not commenced yet, while construction of another 10,000 units have remained stalled at various stages. Meanwhile, with the launch of PMAY-U 2.0 from September last year, uncertainty gripped construction of the pending residential units under PMAY-U as the state government was asked to close the old scheme, for which the deadline had already been extended multiple times, sources said.

Varanasi: 608 beneficiaries receive high-tech, luxury housing under PMAY-U

Varanasi: In a significant milestone under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), 608 beneficiaries in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency Varanasi have been allotted high-tech, luxury-style homes. The project, inaugurated by the Prime Minister in 2015, marks the first time that such advanced housing facilities have been made available to economically weaker sections under the PMAY-U scheme. These residences come equipped with amenities typically found in premium housing projects—sewage treatment plants, solar-powered lighting, parks, gyms, and 24x7 CCTV surveillance. The housing colony features a 30-foot-wide main road, ensuring smooth vehicular movement and connectivity. The allotment of homes was done without discrimination, with both Hindu and Muslim families among the beneficiaries. "This initiative demonstrates that when political will is combined with modern infrastructure, even the poorest sections of society can enjoy a quality lifestyle," builder Ram Gopal Singh said. "We didn't just build houses; we created an ecosystem where people can live with dignity. Facilities like a gym, solar plant, sewage treatment, and open spaces reflect this vision. There's even a local 'Pradhan' to oversee maintenance and safety," he said. Elaborating on the cost-sharing model behind the project, he said: "Each unit cost about Rs 4 lakh. Beneficiaries paid just Rs 2 lakh, while the remaining cost was subsidised - over Rs 1 lakh from the state government and Rs 1.5 lakh from the Central government. On the market, such homes would cost at least Rs 10 lakh." Beneficiaries expressed overwhelming gratitude for the opportunity to IANS. Shabnam Parveen, a new homeowner, said, 'I never thought I could afford a home here. Now I have a roof over my head, and I'm truly happy.' Another resident, Pradeep Singh, praised the quality of life the new colony offers. "There are parks for children, solar lights, clean roads, and a gym. It feels like a dream," he told IANS. Shobhnath Pandey, also a beneficiary, added: "We have received excellent homes under this scheme. We're thankful to the government for making this possible." The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban, a flagship mission of the Centre under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), was launched on June 25, 2015. It aims to address the urban housing shortage among Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low-Income Groups (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG), including slum dwellers, by providing them with permanent housing. Recently, the government has launched PMAY-U 2.0. As of March 2025, under PMAY-U 2.0, the first Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting approved over 3.52 lakh homes across 10 states and Union Territories, reinforcing the government's commitment to inclusive urban development. Fear of floods haunts Bengaluru slums as monsoon nears

BENGALURU: As monsoon clouds gather over Bengaluru, thousands of slum dwellers in the city live in fear of flooding. Many residents, especially those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas like Bakshi Garden off Goodshed Road, Narasimahaiah Colony near Mysuru Road Satellite Bus Stand, and Vinobha Nagar - all slums built over storm water drains - fear that rainwater will gush into their homes and damage their belongings, besides bringing health issues. The Slum Mahila Sanghatane has raised alarm over poor preparedness in these vulnerable settlements. The organisation has demanded that the Disaster Management Act be fully implemented, including mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. They suggested that temporary shelters be set up in government schools and community halls, besides health camps with access to clean water and essential medicines. 'We only receive help from Rotary Club and volunteers. BBMP has done nothing,' said Jhansi, a member of the Sanghatane. One of the main reasons cited for the recurring floods is the failure of the civic body to desilt stormwater drains -- a task supposed to be carried out annually. Responding to the concerns, Karnataka Slum Development Board Commissioner Ashok DR said, 'All engineers have been directed to closely monitor slums that are at risk of flooding, and take preventive action. Although slums do not come directly under our administration, we coordinate with local bodies to ensure timely response.' He added that the Slum Board focuses on providing housing, toilets and drinking water. In an endeavour to provide permanent shelter and relief from rain-related issues to slum dwellers, the Slum Board is constructing houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), he said.

Why did Ramco Cements share price fall 3% in trade on Friday, May 23?

Ramco Cements share price: Cement company Ramco Cements shares were under pressure in early trade, with the scrip dropping up to 2.88 per cent to an intraday low of ₹959.65 per share. Why did Ramco Cements share drop in trade today? Ramco Cements share price dropped after the company posted a weak set of results in the March quarter of financial year 2025 (Q4FY25). Ramco Cements' profit plunged over 78 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to ₹27.4 crore in the March quarter of financial year 2025 (Q4FY25), from ₹129 crore in the same quarter last year (Q4FY24). Its sales dropped 10.5 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹2,397.3 crore in Q4FY25, from ₹2,678.2 crore in Q4FY24. For FY25, net profit declined 24.2 per cent to ₹272.65 crore, as opposed to ₹359.9 crore in FY24. Sales tanked 9.1 per cent to ₹8,518.4 crore in FY25, from ₹9,376.3 crore in FY24. ALSO READ | Ramco Cements dividend The company has proposed a dividend of ₹2 per equity share of face value of ₹1 each for FY25 Ramco Cements FY26 outlook On the demand front, industrial activity is set to recover on the back of increased government spending. A normal monsoon could boost farm incomes and spur rural housing demand, while urban housing is likely to gain traction due to a low base, expected interest rate cuts, and faster execution under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban. Nevertheless, risks from geopolitical tensions, commodity price volatility, financial market fluctuations, and global trade fragmentation persist. Key opportunities lie in maintaining currency stability, favorable monsoons, and potential repo rate cuts. In the cement sector, particularly in the southern region, Ramco Cement has observed a notable price increase in the early months of FY26—₹30 to ₹35 per bag in the trade segment and ₹60 to ₹70 per bag in the non-trade segment. In the eastern region, while trade prices have remained flat, non-trade prices have seen a modest rise of about ₹10 per bag from March-end levels. The company anticipates these prices will hold, driven by accelerated capacity additions and ongoing consolidation in the southern market. However, a major cost pressure has emerged in Tamil Nadu with the introduction of a new Mineral Bearing Land Tax of ₹160 per tonne of limestone from April 4, 2025—the highest in India. For comparison, Jharkhand levies ₹40 per tonne. This tax is expected to increase production costs by approximately ₹200 per tonne of cement produced in the state. Cement manufacturers, through their industry association, have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government for relief, and the matter is currently under review.
