Kerala MP Kodikunnil Suresh slams Centre for denying AIIMS to State
Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the Union government's 'continued neglect' in approving an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for Kerala. In a statement issued here on Sunday (August 10, 2025), Mr. Suresh said the State was in urgent need of advanced tertiary healthcare facilities. The Mavelikara MP said he had raised a question in the Lok Sabha on August 8, seeking details from the Centre regarding the steps taken to establish an AIIMS in Kerala, the locations proposed by the State, and any feasibility studies conducted for central or southern Kerala. 'The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav informed the House that Kerala had proposed four sites for AIIMS at Kinaloor in Kozhikode, Kattakada in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Ernakulam. However, the Minister admitted that none of these proposals have been approved in the current phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY),' Mr. Suresh said. He said that while the government had sanctioned super-speciality blocks at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Alappuzha MCH, Kozhikode MCH, and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, these measures were no substitute for a full-fledged AIIMS. 'It is deeply disappointing that Kerala, with its exceptional health indicators, dense population, and strategic importance, remains one of the few States without an AIIMS. The Centre must end this neglect and include Kerala in the next phase of AIIMS expansion without delay. Our people deserve direct access to world-class medical education and advanced healthcare within the State,' Mr. Suresh said. He urged the Union government to prioritise Kerala in AIIMS allotment, pointing out that such an institute would significantly reduce patient migration, relieve the burden on existing hospitals, and strengthen medical research in the State.

None of four sites proposed by Kerala for AIIMS approved by Centre under PMSSY
None of the four sites, including in Ernakulam district, proposed by the State government for setting up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been approved in the current phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), said Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, in Parliament recently. He was responding to questions raised by three MPs from Kerala — Hibi Eden, M.K. Raghavan, and E.T. Mohammed Basheer. Mr. Jadhav said the Kerala government had identified and proposed four sites for setting up AIIMS: Kinaloor in Kozhikode, Kattakada taluk in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Ernakulam district. 'The proposal has not been approved in the current phase of the PMSSY,' he added. Till date, 22 AIIMS have been sanctioned under the scheme in various parts of the country. However, the upgradation of three medical college hospitals in Kerala—by constructing super-speciality blocks (SSBs) on a Centre-State cost-sharing basis—has been approved under another component of the PMSSY. The hospitals selected for upgradation are Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), TD MCH in Alappuzha, and Kozhikode MCH. In addition, the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram, has also been approved for upgradation through the construction of a SSB on a cost-sharing basis between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Mr. Jadhav said.

Many MBBS seats remain vacant in country, says Union Minister Anupriya Patel
Despite a substantial increase in the number of MBBS seats across the country, a significant number of undergraduate medical seats have remained vacant in the recent academic years, the Union Government has admitted in the Lok Sabha. Responding to a question from Eluru MP Putta Mahesh Kumar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel said that 2,012 undergraduate medical seats went unfilled in 2021–22, followed by 4,146 in 2022–23, 2,959 in 2023–24, and 2,849 in 2024–25. These figures, sourced from the National Medical Commission, exclude AIIMS and JIPMER institutions. The Union Minister emphasised that while the government increased the MBBS seats by 39% in the last five years — from 83,275 in 2020–21 to 1,15,900 in 2024–25 — vacancies persist, underscoring concerns around access, affordability, and distribution of institutions. To enhance quality, the Centre introduced the 'Minimum Standard Requirements–2023', mandating infrastructure norms such as a 220-bed hospital for every 50 students and compulsory rural and urban clinical training. Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), 157 new medical colleges had been approved, with 131 operational, and 75 super-speciality projects sanctioned, of which 71 were complete. Additionally, 19 out of 22 new AIIMS had commenced undergraduate courses. These efforts, the Union Minister said, demonstrate the Centre's commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and access to quality medical education across India.
