‘Exposing Prasidh Krishna to Rohit and Bairstow in Powerplay was a tactical error from GT', says Tom Moody

In the absence of Kagiso Rabada, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill entrusted his leading wicket-taker Prasidh Krishna to move up to open the bowling alongside Mohammed Siraj in the IPL 2025 Eliminator match against Mumbai Indians. The move backfired heavily as Prasidh's natural back-of-a-length deliveries fed into the strengths of MI's veteran opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow. Save for Siraj's opening over that conceded only six runs, the MI openers racked up more than 10 runs in every over of the Powerplay, with Prasidh's second over costing 26 runs. Playing his first game of the season after being roped in as a temporary replacement signing by Mumbai, Bairstow unravelled the tall GT pacer's short lengths with three sixes anf two fours in the over as MI waltzed to 79 for no loss in the Powerplay. Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody called out the tactical blunder from GT skipper Gill as he decided to push a natural middle-overs bowler, Prasidh, to operate with the new ball. 'Opening the bowling with Prasidh Krishna was a tactical error. He has spent a majority of the season as an impact bowler in the middle phase of the game. There's only been two occasions when he has bowled two (overs) in the powerplay in the whole season. He's been most effective with that hard lengths in the middle phase where he's got the protection out there square of the wicket,' Moody said in an ESPNcricinfo interaction. Despite dismissing Rohit on 81 in his death-overs spell, Krishna was GT's most expensive bowler (2/53) as Mumbai registered the highest-ever IPL total at the Mullanpur Stadium. 'To expose him to two players like Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow, who love that back of the length line, they can get back and pivot and pull the ball comfortably, it's right in their wheelhouse… [They could have tried] left-arm spin early on. With Washington Sundar coming in, it would have made a lot of sense and would have been something they [MI openers] possibly wouldn't have been expecting.' The Karnataka pacer, however, topped the Purple Cap charts with 25 wickets in 15 games this season.

Shubman Gill yells at Prasidh for conceding moster six; pacer responds by conceding 26-run over for GT vs MI

Prasidh Krishna endured a horror start in the IPL Eliminator match against Mumbai Indians on Friday, as his first over fetched 26 runs in the Powerplay against the explosive duo of Rohit Sharma and MI debutant Jonny Bairstow. The latter, who played his first match of the season after being brought in as a late replacement for Ryan Rickelton, showed no signs of nerve as he was on attack from the very first delivery. While he was dismissed just three runs shy of his half-century, he inflicted a serious damage on GT bowlers during the Powerplay, with Prasidh taking the most of the brunt. It was the fourth over of the game as GT captain Shubman Gill threw the ball to his best strike bowler this season in the hope of turning the tide. But what followed was nothing short of a demolition from Bairstow. The first ball of the over set the tone. Prasidh dropped it short, just outside off, and Bairstow, standing tall and balanced, swivel-pulled it with disdain. The ball took off over square leg for a six. A clean strike, and one that sent an instant reaction from Gill. The GT skipper, stationed inside the circle, turned sharply and yelled at Prasidh. However, Prasidh, under pressure, failed to make a quick comeback. The next delivery offered width, and Bairstow needed no second invitation. He backed away and smashed it over cover-point, one bounce and across the rope. Prasidh tried to regroup with a fuller ball shaping away and Bairstow was momentarily beaten. But the fourth saw Bairstow swing wildly across the line, getting a thick edge. The ball sailed over the third man who was inside the ring. Another six. The final delivery was a gift outside off and Bairstow launched it over long-off. The GT players were left frozen as the ball cleared the boundary with ease. Earlier, MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bat in Mullanpur. The winner of the match will meet Punjab Kings for a place in the final of the 2025 season. The Kings faced a thumping defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Qualifier 1 on Thursday.

How Prasidh Krishna refined his bowling skills to become IPL 2025's Purple Cap frontrunner

Prasidh Krishna couldn't have chosen a more ironic nickname than 'skiddyy' for his Instagram profile. Ask any batsman who has fronted up to Prasidh, they will tell you what surprises them the most is the bounce he generates. At 1.88m, he is unique among Indian seamers. Having spent a major part of the last three years in and out battling injuries, there were concerns whether Indian cricket would ever get to see the real potential of Prasidh. And after biding time to regain full-fitness, the 29-year-old is beginning to live up to the promise. As the Indian Premier League resumes on Saturday, the Gujarat Titans pacer is the frontrunner in the race for Purple Cap with 20 wickets from 11 matches. Without being rapid, Prasidh has the skillset to make things happen. This season, Prasidh has also come across a more refined bowler. 'What he has done in IPL is he has really improved his length. And he has understood his bowling and the sense of how much to use his variations with clarity,' says Mansur Ali Khan, the bowling coach of Karnataka, who has seen Prasidh since the time he came into the state fold. 'See, those lengths. Actually, he was a little bit behind. But, he started working hard on those lengths, which is important in T20s. When you are hitting the run-up if you are confused, they say just bowl the hard-length ball which is 7-8 metres from the batsman. And Prasidh naturally hits those lengths consistently,' Mansur adds. When GT shelled Rs 9.50 crore on Prasidh at the auction, several eyebrows were raised. With Rajasthan Royals being the lone other team interested, it appeared a gamble. Prasidh, with his injury history, hadn't featured in the previous two seasons. But Gujarat, like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, have shown the vision to look beyond recent trends and at the big picture. In 2021 and 2022, Prasidh had 12 and 19 wickets to his name respectively and despite having Mohammed Siraj and Rashid Khan as strike-bowlers, Gujarat looked at Prasidh as another wicket-taking option. In fact, in the lead up to the 2023 World Cup, India were pinning their hopes on Prasidh to be their strike force in the middle-overs. It is what GT see in him too. When it comes to operating in the middle-overs, only a few pacers are adept at it and Prasidh ticks that box as a hit-the-deck bowler. Among Indians there is none apart from Hardik Pandya who naturally hit the back of the length which is considered hardest to get away. And with his height, Prasidh also manages to extract more bounce, which makes it all the more challenging for batsmen to control their shots. It means, in a season where Rashid Khan hasn't been at his absolute best, opposition haven't been able to score freely in the middle-overs. Out of the 11 innings he has bowled, in seven of those he has gone at an economy of under 7, which is considered the gold standard in IPL. For a team that alternates between red and black soil pitches for their home games depending on the opposition, in Prasidh they have a seamer whose bowling is surface agnostic. A majority of his 20 wickets have been caught by fielders, with the ball hitting the top-half of the bat in most instances. It is a testament to the lengths he hits. To become more rounded, Prasidh has also added the slower ball variations to his armoury. With an open-chest action, he has also has managed to keep it discreet, with the grip changing only at the point of release and thereby giving batsmen less time to pick it up. Though he did have the slower ball before, Mansur says Prasidh has added the off-cutter in recent times. 'Everyone will have a slower ball, but its strength is how well one bowls it. He had it earlier, but now I would say it is perfect because he has mastered it. Moreover, he is using at the right moments and not over-bowling it,' Mansur says. Given Prasidh's solid performance in Australia earlier this year in the last Test, he will be part of the pace pack that India will carry to England for the five Tests. For someone who had the in-swinger early on his career, he lost it a bit as he chased the out-swinger. According to Mansur, Prasidh had put extra attention to get that back for the simple reason he didn't want to be one-dimensional. 'With Prasidh, there is always the hunger to learn and perform at the highest level. Before the Australia series, he came to our (Karnataka) nets and was bowling like he was bowling to the Australia top-order. Planning-wise, he has always been exceptional. To get the in-swing he bowled a lot with the tennis ball before moving to double-colour balls and the soft cricket balls. He would be a good addition in England,' Mansur adds.

Noor Ahmad to Trent Boult: Top contenders for Purple Cap in IPL 2025

The ongoing 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), IPL 2025, was brought to a sudden halt on Friday, May 9, after the BCCI decided to suspend the tournament for a week due to the ongoing cross-border conflict between India and Pakistan. However, it is currently seen as just a small roadblock, as with only 16 matches left in the tournament, the BCCI can find a suitable window to host the remaining matches any time in the coming months. Now, before the tournament went on hold, it was proving to be one of the toughest seasons, as even after 58 matches no team had qualified for the playoffs, and the race for the Orange and Purple Caps was just as competitive as it could get. In the race for the Purple Cap, the top five players were separated by only three wickets, meaning that when the tournament resumes, any of them could claim the title of highest wicket-taker of IPL 2025. But who could it be, and how do the other players fare on the list? Take a look. 1. Prasidh Krishna (GT) – 20 wickets Prasidh Krishna has been outstanding with the ball for Gujarat Titans this season, leading the bowling charts with 20 wickets in 11 matches. His economy rate of 7.65 and strike rate of 12.90 show how lethal he has been with the new ball and at the death. Known for his pace and bounce, Prasidh has delivered consistently under pressure. His best performance of 4 for 41 highlights his match-winning capabilities. With Gujarat dominating the league, Prasidh's disciplined bowling has been one of the key reasons for their success. 2. Noor Ahmad (CSK) – 20 wickets Also Read The young Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad has been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Chennai Super Kings. He has taken 20 wickets in 12 matches, matching Prasidh Krishna's tally but with a slightly higher average of 17.25. His left-arm wrist spin has troubled even the most experienced batters. Despite CSK's struggles, Noor has bowled with control and flair, collecting two four-wicket hauls. His ability to pick wickets in the middle overs and keep the scoring rate in check has made him an invaluable asset in the CSK bowling line-up. 3. Josh Hazlewood (RCB) – 18 wickets Josh Hazlewood's impact on Royal Challengers Bengaluru's bowling unit has been significant. With 18 wickets in just 10 matches, he has delivered breakthroughs in crucial moments. His average of 17.27 and strike rate of 12.27 reflect his precision and accuracy. Hazlewood's experience shines through in his ability to bowl with discipline during powerplays and at the death. While not the most economical at 8.44, his knack for picking wickets consistently has helped RCB maintain pressure on opponents throughout the tournament. 4. Trent Boult (MI) – 18 wickets Trent Boult has brought his vast T20 experience to bear for the Mumbai Indians this season. With 18 wickets in 12 games, Boult has been one of the leaders of MI's bowling attack. His average of 19.88 and strike rate of 14.05 underline his effectiveness, especially with the new ball. Boult's ability to swing the ball both ways and his deadly yorkers at the death have played a pivotal role in Mumbai's rise in the points table. His presence in the squad has given Mumbai a reliable wicket-taking option in any phase of the game. 5. Varun Chakaravarthy (KKR) – 17 wickets Varun Chakaravarthy has once again been Kolkata Knight Riders' go-to bowler in the spin department. With 17 wickets in 12 games and a stellar economy of 7.00, Varun has kept things tight in the middle overs while also picking up key wickets. His deceptive variations have proved difficult for batters to read, allowing him to break partnerships and halt momentum. Even though KKR's playoff hopes are dimming, Varun's form remains a positive takeaway. His ability to control the game with subtle changes in pace and angle has been impressive. 6. Arshdeep Singh (PBKS) – 16 wickets Arshdeep Singh has delivered yet another strong IPL season for Punjab Kings, claiming 16 wickets in 12 matches. Known for his death-over expertise, Arshdeep has maintained an economy of 8.00 while averaging just over 18. His left-arm pace and clever variations make him a constant threat to batters, especially in pressure situations. Although he hasn't taken a four-wicket haul this year, his consistency in chipping away with important breakthroughs has helped Punjab remain competitive in close matches. Arshdeep continues to be a promising talent for both IPL and Indian cricket. 7. Vaibhav Arora (KKR) – 16 wickets Vaibhav Arora has been a breakout performer for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025. With 16 wickets in 11 matches, he has made a strong case for himself as a reliable new-ball bowler. His economy of 10.15 is on the higher side, but his strike rate of 14.43 reflects his ability to take wickets regularly. Despite KKR's fluctuating form, Arora's knack for early breakthroughs has stood out. His natural swing and aggression have made him one of the most exciting young fast bowlers to watch this season. 8. Mohammed Siraj (GT) – 15 wickets Mohammed Siraj has been a consistent performer for Gujarat Titans, contributing 15 wickets in 11 matches. His fiery pace and attacking approach have made him a constant wicket-taking threat, particularly during the powerplay. With a strike rate of 16.40 and a four-wicket haul to his name, Siraj has provided GT with vital momentum. Though his economy is a bit expensive at 9.00, his ability to bowl with heart and aggression in pressure situations makes him a key figure in Gujarat's bowling strategy this season. 9. Harshit Rana (KKR) – 15 wickets Harshit Rana has quietly put together a solid campaign for Kolkata Knight Riders with 15 wickets in 12 games. A young fast bowler with sharp pace, Rana has stepped up for KKR amid injuries and inconsistent performances from other bowlers. His strike rate of 16.40 suggests he can deliver key breakthroughs, although his economy of 9.95 shows room for improvement. Despite this, his performances have been encouraging and show promise for KKR's future. Rana's ability to bowl at the death and adapt to different match situations has been commendable. 10. Sai Kishore (GT) – 14 wickets Sai Kishore has been a vital cog in the Gujarat Titans' spin attack, taking 14 wickets in 11 matches. Operating primarily in the middle overs, his left-arm orthodox spin has not only been economical but also penetrative. With an average of 17.64 and a strike rate of 12.64, Kishore has shown remarkable efficiency with the ball. His three-wicket haul and consistent performances have helped GT control games from the middle overs onward. His contribution has allowed other bowlers like Prasidh and Siraj to attack more freely, making the Gujarat bowling unit well-rounded and effective. IPL 2025 Purple Cap leaderboard:

Prasidh Krishna emerges as Gujarat Titans' trump card in IPL 2025

There will be an extra buzz at the Wankhede on Tuesday (May 6) when Mumbai Indians (MI) take on Gujarat Titans (GT). Both teams are in a race to finish in the top two of the IPL 2025 points table, and the winner of this game will take a giant stride towards that, while the loser will see their chances diminished significantly. The buzz around the game is about the return of Kagiso Rabada, but it is Prasidh Krishna who might be the most potent weapon for the Titans. In fact, the way Prasidh has been bowling in IPL 2025, he might even be the bowler to watch out for from both sides. That sounds like sacrilege in a game involving Jasprit Bumrah, but that's just how good Prasidh has been. Prasidh had watched the last two years of the IPL from the sidelines, sitting out due to injury. It was not as if he was particularly missed because in the five years he had played, from 2018 to 2022, he had a middling record: an average of 34.76 and an economy of 8.92, with 49 wickets in 51 games. Till then, in matches that Prasidh had been involved in, pace bowlers averaged 30.11 and conceded runs at 8.77 per game. This means that Prasidh was actually below par, overall. It looked like the same story might continue in IPL 2025, when Prasidh had 3-0-41-0 in his first game. However, Prasidh had been working behind the scenes, and the results of that work would start showing up soon. Spectacularly. It began with his second game of IPL 2025, against the very same Mumbai Indians. Prasidh bowled with pace, movement and supreme control to take 2/18 in four overs, and win the Player of the Match award. Since that game, he hasn't gone wicketless in any subsequent match and is currently the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2025, with 19 wickets in 10 games. From taking less than a wicket per game to nearly two per match, it's been quite a remarkable turnaround. 'I was a metre or two shorter, slightly wider. So I really went back to the nets and worked on the very basics,' Prasidh had said after that first MI game. 'I'm playing T20s after a while and I needed that game, that over or a ball to get going.' As the performances kept stacking up, Prasidh was asked if this was the best he had ever bowled in the IPL. 'Yes, I would say so,' he replied, before explaining what was working. 'My control over length has been good. All the work that we've been putting in as a team, and everybody around has been supportive enough for me to get to where I am now. I'm enjoying the way the ball is coming out of the hand.' Control over length has been the key. In IPL 2025, Prasidh has been landing the ball on that hard length with unreal consistency. His pace, natural bounce allied to his height, and the movement he's always been able to get have ensured that batters have no respite against Prasidh. But he's also mastered variations. On pitches that grip, Prasidh is able to dial down his speed from the mid-140s to the low 130s and bowl cutters. When faced with an in-form KL Rahul, he's been able to summon the perfect yorker to get a key wicket. 'My preparation starts firstly by getting control over what I want to do,' Prasidh explained. 'Get into the nets and do exactly what I would do against somebody that I will be facing in a particular game, and from there, on game day, you look at what the pitch is like. If you're bowling second, make sure you watch every single ball of the 20 overs someone else bowls.' Prasidh's resurgence started from the MI game. But MI themselves have also been resurgent, with six consecutive victories. However, that mighty batting line-up will be up against a bowler in red-hot form too. Since that match, Prasidh has been averaging 13.21 with an economy of 6.97, and has bowled his full quota of four overs in each of the nine games. And pace bowlers, overall, in those nine games averaged 29.84 while going at 9.48. GT will look towards Prasidh, in his new role as the enforcer and the SOS man, to once again stop MI.
