Panchkula mass suicide: Mittals first went to Sec 12 bhawan to execute plan
1 2 Panchkula: Police investigations into Panchkula mass suicide case have revealed that the Mittal family may have initially planned to end their lives at Dr B R Ambedkar Bhawan in Sector 12-A before ultimately choosing Sector 27 as their final location. Analysis of CCTV footage showed that after departing from their Saketri residence on Monday morning, the family checked into two rooms at Ambedkar Bhawan. "We suspect their original intention was to end their lives at the bhawan, but circumstances led them to alter their plans. They departed from the premises at 6.35 pm," a police official confirmed. "Contrary to earlier reports, they did not attend any religious gathering in Sector 5. They proceeded directly to Sector 27, where they parked their vehicle in a residential area before taking the fatal step," the official said. Police teams have been deployed to various locations in Dehradun and Panchkula for investigation. "Although initial evidence suggests no foul play, we are investigating his activities over the past six months to one year," another official noted. While postmortem examinations indicate simultaneous deaths, the viscera report remains pending to determine the exact cause. Given the limited information from family members about their recent circumstances, police face extensive investigative work to understand the deceased family's situation. On Monday night, bodies of Praveen Mittal's father Deshraj Mittal (70), mother Bimla (66), wife Reena Mittal (40), son Hardik (13), and twin daughters Dilasha and Dhruvita (11) were found in their vehicle parked in Sector 27, while Praveen was found semi-conscious, but later died during CPR at the civil hospital. Two suicide notes attributed to Praveen Mittal cited financial bankruptcy as the reason, without holding anyone responsible. The family resided in Saketri after relocating from Pinjore, Kharar, and Dehradun. Praveen's financial difficulties included a failed scrap-material processing facility in Baddi, an unsuccessful tour and travel venture in Dehradun, and eventually working as a driver in Panchkula, accumulating debts worth several crores.

How debt turned death trap for Mittals in Panchkula
1 2 Panchkula: From a failed scrap-material processing plant in Baddi to an unsuccessful tour and travel business in Dehradun, and eventually working as a driver in the Panchkula region, 42-year-old Praveen Mittal's life was marked by a series of financial setbacks and debts running into several crores. In a tragic culmination of this long struggle, Praveen allegedly ended his life along with six members of his family in Sector 27, Panchkula, on Monday night following a Sector 5 religious congregation. The Mittal family originally hailed from Barwala in Haryana's Hisar district. Praveen moved to Panchkula with his parents in the mid-2000s, where he later married Reena. According to his cousins, Ankit Mittal and Sandeep Aggarwal, Praveen's financial troubles began in 2008 when he suffered major losses in a scrap-material processing unit that he operated in Baddi. Despite repeated attempts, he was unable to turn the business around. Eventually, the bank stepped in and seized the factory along with other properties to recover a loan estimated at Rs 12–15 crore. Following this, Praveen became distant from the family and had little to no contact for nearly seven to eight years. It wasn't until 2014 that the family discovered he relocated to Dehradun and started reconnecting. Ankit Mittal recalled that over the following years, Praveen slowly resumed occasional communication. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Earn from Home in Dudmukha [See How] Earn Money Learn More Undo "We saw each other at a few family gatherings," he said. "He also visited us, and I went to see him in Dehradun. But then again, he faced another setback — this time in a tour and travel business he started, which also failed." Referring to a suicide note reportedly written by Praveen, in which he requested that his father-in-law should not do their last rites, Ankit noted that the relationship between Praveen and his in-laws was strained. "When Praveen and his family moved back here a few months ago, they initially stayed with his father-in-law, Rakesh Gupta. Praveen lived on the first floor, while his father-in-law occupied the ground floor. However, they didn't stay long and soon moved out as his father told him they did not get along well," he said. "I last spoke with him about five days ago. He told me everything was fine and mentioned that the family recently shifted to a rented house in Saketri, near the Mansa Devi complex." His father-in-law told reporters that there was no trouble between them and he was currently working as a driver. Car belonged to Dehradun resident Meanwhile, it was found that the Hyundai car in which the family was found was registered under Gambhir Singh Negi, a Dehradun resident. Negi told police that he met Praveen through an NGO called Child Life Care Mission and helped finance the car, though it was used exclusively by Praveen. Praveen's brother, Jitender Mittal, who runs a ready-made garment business in Panchkula's Rajiv Colony, has been assisting authorities with the investigation. No support system in our society: Sociologist Meanwhile, talking about this scenario, Dr Rajesh Gill, retired Professor of Sociology, Panjab University and advocate at Punjab and Haryana high court, commented, "It is not easy to commit suicide, that too mass suicide, there must be some family desperation. It shows there is no support system in our society and we are so individualistic. We talk all good things on social media and not share our problems. In earlier times, there used to be community, neighbourhood and relatives to support. These things can be diluted after sharing. How isolated we are? Under such circumstances, survival becomes difficult. As far as children are concerned, we do not know whether they were told about the move or were given the poison in some eatables or drink without their knowledge. Suicide is tough for adults, you can imagine for minors." (sending timeline) MSID:: 121444170 413 |

6 of family dead in car, 7th dies in hospital; debt behind mass suicide
Police and officials investigate at the site after seven members of a family from Dehradun allegedly consumed poison and died in a car, in Panchkula, early Tuesday, May 27, 2025. (PTI) PANCHKULA: Six members of a family were found dead inside a parked car late Monday night in Sector 27 of Haryana's Panchkula, while a seventh died hours later in a hospital. Police said Praveen Mittal, 42, a debt-ridden businessman, left suicide notes taking full responsibility for the deaths. Bodies of Praveen's wife Reena (40), parents Deshraj and Bimla (60+), son Hardik (13), and twin daughters Dilasha and Dhruvita (11) were discovered by residents after the family allegedly took poison in a car. Praveen, found semi-conscious outside the car, told a bystander before collapsing: "We are in debt... no relative helped us." He died in hospital. Police are treating the deaths as a case of mass suicide, pending toxicology confirmation. ACP Vikram Nehra said cops found two suicide notes, allegedly written by Praveen, saying he had gone bankrupt & preferred his cousin in Ludhiana to perform last rites. Rs 15 crore debt pushed Praveen into deep distress A sodium nitrate-based chemical, empty water bottles, and a soft drink were found in the vehicle. Lab results are pending. Praveen, originally from Hisar's Barwala, had suffered repeated financial failures - from a shuttered scrap unit in Baddi to a collapsed tour and travel business in Dehradun. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning For Working Professionals. According to Dehradun police, Praveen lived in Kaulagarh for four years before shifting to Chandigarh seven months ago. He had borrowed a car from Gambhir Singh Negi, who said he financed the vehicle in his own name at Mittal's request, with the latter promising to pay EMIs. Neighbours and locals were shocked. "The girls were very cute. They used to walk in the park," said Manish Chaudhary, who rented a two-room set in Saketri to the family for Rs 8,000 a month. "He told me Monday morning they were going out of station for three days." Police said the family had attended a Bageshwar Dham gathering earlier that day in Sector 5 and were seen parked in the area by locals, who initially assumed they were resting due to lack of hotel accommodation. Relatives described Praveen as withdrawn and financially burdened. Cousin Ankit Mittal recalled long stretches without contact and multiple failed attempts at business recovery. Praveen's ties with in-laws were strained, leading him to exclude his father-in-law from last rites in his final note. Praveen's brother Jitender, a garment trader in Panchkula, is assisting police with the investigation. Sociologist and former Panjab University professor Rajesh Gill called the tragedy a reflection of societal isolation. "There's no support system now - no extended family, no neighbourhood to fall back on," she said. "Adults may struggle, but for children, suicide is unimaginable unless they were unaware." From Hisar to Dehradun to a rented accommodation in Panchkula — Mittal changed businesses, locations, but faced only losses
Praveen Mittal, 41, struggled to establish multiple businesses in the last two decades. Eventually, he got bankrupt, and all seven of his family members including his father Deshraj (70), mother Bimla (66), wife Reena (38), and three children, including twin daughters Dhruvita and Dilisha (11) and son Hardik (14) died allegedly by suicide. All the family members were found in an unconscious state in the same car that was found parked on the roadside in a residential locality of Sector 27 of Panchkula. The police also recorded a statement of a Sector 27 resident, Harsh Rana, who first spotted the car and exchanged a few words with Mittal, who was alive at the time. Harsh told the police that he was taking a stroll outside his house when he saw the Hyundai car with its rear windshield covered with a towel. He told the police that the car was unlocked and when he opened one of the doors, he found Mittal. Praveen, who was semi-conscious, was the last one who died in the hospital, while the remaining six had died in the car itself, according to the police. From scrap-material processing business, to a tours and travels business, to running a taxi, Praveen tried his luck on multiple businesses, all of which failed and generated crores of rupees of debt. The Mittal family, according to his relatives, hails from Barwala in Hisar district of Haryana. It was in mid-2000 when the 41-year-old shifted with his parents to Panchkula and got married to Reena. His cousins, Ankit Mittal and Sandeep Aggarwal, told The Indian Express that it was in 2008 when Praveen first incurred heavy losses in a scrap-material processing factory in Baddi. According to his cousins, he struggled to break even, but could not. 'The bank seized his factory and other properties that he possessed to recover their loan amount that was approximately around Rs 12-15 crore. For about 7-8 years, he (Praveen) did not keep in touch with any of us his relatives. It was in 2014 that we learnt that he had moved to Dehradun. It was during that time, he started getting back in touch with us,' Ankit said. Talking about how Praveen re-established contact with his relatives, Mittal added that he met him on a few occasions. 'Together, we also attended a few family functions. He also came to this side and I also visited him in Dehradun a couple of times. But, a few years ago, he again suffered losses in a tours and travels business that he was running,' the relative added. About the suicide note purportedly written by Praveen in which he mentioned that his father-in-law (Rakesh Gupta) should not be harassed, Aggarwal said that he was not in 'good terms' with Gupta. 'A few months ago, however, when he shifted here with his family. Praveen did stay with his father-in-law. They (Praveen's family) stayed on the first floor of the house while his father-in-law stayed on the ground floor. But, from there too, he (Praveen) shifted soon. I last spoke with Praveen about five days ago. It was then, he told me that he was fine and the family had shifted to a rented accommodation in Saketri near Mansa Devi complex. He told me that he had taken the accommodation on rent,' Aggarwal added. Manish Chaudhary, Praveen's landlord told The Indian Express that it was barely a month ago when the former shifted in his house at Saketri at a rent of Rs 8,000. 'It has not even been one full month since they shifted at my house, here in Saketri. Yesterday (Monday), Praveen called me at about 9 am and informed me that he and entire family were going out of station because his children's summer vacation had begun and this morning, I received this shocking news,' Chaudhary added. Talking about the Mittal family's behaviour, Chaudhary said that they lived like a 'normal family'. 'They used to come out for morning walks. Children were very good and well behaved. It is quite unfortunate what has happened.' Before coming to Saketri, Praveen and his family used to stay in Dehradun's Kaulagarh. The Hyundai car, in which Mittal family was found Monday night, was found to be registered in the name of a Dehradun resident Gambhir Singh Negi. Police reached out to him and he told them that he had met Praveen in connection with a NGO – Child Life Care Mission. They became friends and the car was financed in Gambhir's name, but was being used by Praveen. ACP (Panchkula) Vikram Nehra told The Indian Express that the children were studying in a government school at Sector 28. Praveen's brother Jitender Mittal lives in Rajiv colony, Panchkula and owns a business of readymade garments. About the recoveries from the car, ACP Nehra said that 'a lot of medicines were found from the car. 'A powder form of sodium nitrate was also recovered. The postmortem of the bodies was conducted today (Monday). The relatives shall be performing their last rites. We shall be sending the viscera for chemical examination to analyse the exact cause of death,' Nehra added.
