Mohamed Salah slammed for 'disrespectful' tweet during Liverpool crash probe

Mohamed Salah is at the centre of controversy after a 'tone-deaf' post appeared on his social media feed following Liverpool's parade tragedy. A picture of the forward kissing the Premier League trophy was uploaded to X just hours after a group of fans were struck by a car in the city centre. It was around 6pm on Monday when reports emerged that a car had ploughed into those celebrating the Reds' title win. And the incident is understood to have left 27 people hospitalised, four of whom are believed to be children. Merseyside Police have since confirmed a "53-year-old white British man" was arrested at the scene soon after the tragedy unfolded. But while fans and the city's residents were still in a state of shock, a celebratory post on the club talisman's social media feed took many by surprise. The sense of mayhem was still visceral when the post appeared at 8.24pm, with emergency services swarming to aid those affected in Liverpool city centre. And the Daily Express reported the criticism aimed his way was swift for what many deemed an insensitive and poorly timed interjection. "It's not the right time, respect the painful incident," wrote one angry fan. Another bluntly replied: "F**k you and your PR team. A third supporter chimed in with the chorus of criticism aimed at Salah, who had just picked up the Premier League Golden Boot in addition to the league crown: "This is why you should never relinquish control of your socials to a soulless media team. Completely inappropriate." The post in question was quickly taken down from Salah's account. However, it was seen by enough fans to cause a ripple of discontent among supporters, both those devoted to Liverpool and otherwise. It is believed Salah's team possibly queued up the post ahead of time, but that didn't stop a flurry of backlash from supporters online. "This scheduled post has landed at a bad time," wrote a fourth disgruntled fan. "They need to do damage control." Some of Salah's avid followers jumped to his side, however, despite the poor timing. And they sought to divert some of the vitriol away from the player himself. "Obviously Mo's PR team who should know a lot better - he would never do this," wrote one sympathiser. Another commented: "This is bad social media management. Posting this just after the Liverpool parade have cancelled if it's scheduled." Liverpool have been engaged with Merseyside Police concerning the calamitous Water Street episode. The debacle was all the more devastating given it trailed the joy of the parade and the celebrations that came with it. "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening," read a club statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident." The tragic scenes led to an outpouring of support from sports fans and fellow clubs alike. Merseyside rivals Everton and Tranmere Rovers were among those to share their sympathies and send "thoughts and prayers" to those affected.

Salah equals record with fourth Premier League Golden Boot - Talents Abroad

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah won the Premier League Golden Boot for a fourth time on Sunday, equalling the record set by former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry. The Egyptian netted 29 times, including his side's equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday, to fire Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title. Newcastle's Alexander Isak finished second on 23, with Erling Haaland of Manchester City, who had won the award in each of the past two seasons, third on 22. Salah also finished as the Premier League's top scorer in the 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2021/22 seasons. The 32-year-old could go on to surpass Henry's mark after recently signing a two-year extension to his contract at Anfield. Salah's season also included 18 Premier League assists and saw him win a complete sweep of the football writers and Professional Footballers Association player of the year awards. Mohamed Salah reveals Liverpool fear and what 'drives him crazy' - 'I'm not lying'

Mohamed Salah feared there was only a 10% chance of extending his Liverpool contract - as he joked the Reds have a place for Kevin De Bruyne in their squad. Salah ended months of speculation in April when he agreed a new two-year contract having been set to leave on a free transfer in the summer. The Egyptian hadn't expected the Reds to be open to a new deal given the long-standing trend under owners Fenway Sports Group not to give lucrative contracts to players in their 30s. However, Salah, who will be 33 this summer, and Virgil van Dijk, who turns 34 before the start of the new campaign, have both thrashed out extensions to their Anfield careers. "Because we know how the club - I'm not attacking them - just I know how they deal with players over 30 in the past, and I know how the situation will be, so I'd never expect that the club was going to be like 'okay, two years with the money, and all of us are happy'. So I didn't expect that I'm going to stay. "It's in my head, based on club philosophy, (that) I will not stay. I know how the club works, it's not something that is bad, it's just we see how they deal with a situation like this in the past. So, based on experience, you saw in the past, you just judge a situation." Salah added: "I think it took like six months for negotiations to start going really quick, and I think from January it's like, okay, now things are getting better and better. So it took a while. "I think the club was testing me to see if I can still provide or not! I didn't want more that (two years)." Salah has enjoyed an outstanding season in helping Liverpool become champions, scoring 33 goals and providing 23 assists in all competitions. He was last week named Footballer of the Year, is a front-runner for the PFA Player of the Year award is expected to win the Premier League Golden Boot. The Egyptian is also among the favourites for the Ballon d'Or having previously never before finished higher than fifth despite racking up the records and trophies while with Liverpool. "It used to drive me crazy before, but some stuff is not in your hands, so you give up in that direction," said Salah. "But when you go to work, it's in your mind a little bit what you want to achieve this season. So it also drives you to work hard. "I would love to win it one day, I'm not lying to you. I'm not giving up on it, I would love to win it. If it doesn't happen, I'm don't know what I can do. "I'm not sure why I haven't won it. But I'm sure there's a good chance of winning it this year." Speaking to Sky Sports, Salah was also given the opportunity to pay tribute to Kevin De Bruyne, who will leave Manchester City at the end of the season after 10 years among the best players in the Premier League. "I want to tell him congratulations for your career here, he has done phenomenal at City and was great for the league," he said. "I really wish him the best - and we have a space for him!"

Premier League awards 2025: PST chooses its Best XI of the 2024-25 PL season

A decisive champion does not make a dominant one, and the Premier League's Best XI is unlikely to look like it has in recent seasons when Man City or Liverpool take up most of the positions on nearly every ballot. Yes, it's a difficult one. And the advanced stats don't make it easier, as some of the season's most impressive individual performances came from stars living in the bottom half of the table. Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Eberechi Eze were among the magnificent talents who did not qualify for Europe through the league route. Then the injuries — superstars Erling Haaland and Bukayo Saka were very good this season but missed significant stretches. MORE — Premier League Golden Boot race So, it makes sense that our three staff writers — Joe Prince-Wright, Andy Edwards, and Nick Mendola — had different looking Best XIs as we asked them to assemble one after Week 36 of the 2024-25 Premier League season. There were 33 spots to be awarded between our trio of writers, and 18 different players were selected for the honors. Liverpool, to no one surprise, had the most players spread between the teams. Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Mohammed Salah were unanimous, while Alexis Mac Allister slid onto Prince-Wright's list. Man City may well finish third or even second on the table, but Pep Guardiola's team only had one player named by one writer — Mendola picked Josko Gvardiol in his back three. MORE — Goodison Park final game details Arsenal's William Saliba was unanimous call but the only Gunner named by our panel. Chelsea also only had one player selected, as Nick picked Enzo Fernandez. Newcastle United's Alexander Isak was also unanimous, and Edwards nabbed Bruno Guimaraes to give the Magpies a second representative. Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels made two squads, and he was joined by Murillo on JPW's Best XI. Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and Kepa Arrizabalaga made the cut, while Fulham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Brentford saw players named at least once. Let's take a look at the XIs. Nicholas Mendola's 2024-25 Premier League Best XI Kepa Arrizabalaga William Saliba, Virgil van Dijk, Josko Gvardiol Daniel Munoz, Ryan Gravenberch, Enzo Fernandez, Antonee Robinson Mohammed Salah, Alexander Isak, Bryan Mbeumo Andy Edwards' 2024-25 Premier League Best XI Matz Sels Daniel Muñoz, William Saliba, Virgil van Dijk, Antonee Robinson Ryan Gravenberch, Bruno Guimaraes, Youri Tielemans Joe Prince-Wright's 2024-25 Premier League Best XI William Saliba, Virgil van Dijk, Murillo Daniel Munoz, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Milos Kerkez Mohammed Salah, Matheus Cunha Alexander Isak Newcastle get back on level terms thanks to Alexander Isak's second goal of the season to make it 1-1 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Bees are buzzing thanks to Bryan Mbeumo's left-footed curler into the bottom corner of the net to put Brentford 1-0 ahead of Crystal Palace at the Gtech. Liverpool take the lead thanks to Alexis Mac Allister's glancing header to make it 1-0 over 10-men Wolves at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah reveals tension with former Liverpool teammate: 'We weren't close'

Mohamed Salah has admitted there 'was always tension' between him and former Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane, insisting they were 'never close'. Salah and Mane formed a fearsome front three alongside Robert Firmino which was the foundation of Liverpool's success under Jurgen Klopp. Their relentless goal scoring form fired Liverpool to two Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019 – winning the latter – with the two sharing the Premier League Golden Boot the same season in the Premier League. Mane left the club in 2022 to join Bayern Munich before leaving Germany to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi club Al Nassr. Despite their success playing together, their relationship occasionally came under scrutiny. During a league match against Burnley in 2019, Mane reacted furiously when Salah opted to shoot for goal rather than pass to him while he was open, needing teammates on the bench to calm him down. Salah, who last month signed a new contract at Anfield, has now opened up on the relationship with his former teammate in an interview with L'Equipe. 'Yes, there was tension with Sadio,' Salah said. 'But we were professional until the end. I don't think it affected the team. 'It's human to want more, I understand that, he's a competitor. Off the pitch, we weren't very close, but we always respected each other.' Salah added: 'People can think what they want, it's their right. 'But I invite everyone to note that the person who provided Mane with the most assists is me. We can look at the facts, but it's obviously easier to throw out phrases like that; it makes the headlines, I know how it works. 'As long as it remains within the limits of respect, that's fine with me. But that doesn't mean that this opinion is true. At the end of the day, I know what I did and my conscience is clear.' More Trending At the time of the Burnley incident, Klopp laughed it off with Mane later explaining they were still 'good friends'. 'With Salah? It's forgotten,' Mane said. 'Sometimes you have to say things face to face. These are things that happen in football, sometimes it happens that I am not given the pass. 'But we have reconciled and become the good friends we were before.'
