However, new research from Preply is turning that perception on its head. The study suggests that the Glaswegian accent could actually offer an unexpected advantage - learning languages faster, thanks to its characteristics. The distinct rhythm and cadence of Glaswegian speech align with languages like German, and Dutch, where strong emphasis on syllables and guttural sounds can be important in conveying meaning. This makes it easier for Glaswegian speakers to adapt to languages with similar speech patterns. The Glaswegian accent has been showcased on the world stage many times by the likes of comics Billy Connolly and Kevin Bridges. But how might region accents improve language skills? "Generally, accents can help with language learning because they train your ear to recognise and reproduce sounds," Anna Pyshna, spokesperson at Preply, explained. "At the beginner level, language is mostly oral-oriented - you don't need perfect grammar, but it helps to know how to pronounce common words. "Ultimately, accents are not just about how we speak, they shape our ability to produce certain sounds." Three other British accents - Geordie, Scouse, and Brummie - were also highlighted in the study, each offering unique phonetic traits that support language learning in different ways. Folk from Newcastle have a glottal stop - a sound made by closing the vocal chords. This helps with languages including Danish, Czech, and even Hebrew, and Thai. Liverpool residents speak with a rolled 'r' sound, like in Spanish, Russian and Italian. Scouse speakers find it easier to master the trilled 'r' pronunciation. Its rising and falling tones are also well suited to Welsh, Irish, and Cantonese. Elsewhere, over in Birmingham, people speak in a monotone nature with long stretches on the same note. This will help if Brummies want to have a stab at Finnish or Russian. What's more, to expose more people to different accents, Preply has launched a unique Spotify series of accent-based sleep soundscapes, using Geordie, Scouse, Glaswegian, and Brummie voices. This is designed to boost language retention through passive auditory learning, as studies show that during deep sleep, the brain can keep forming new linguistic associations, especially when exposed to familiar phonetic rhythms. Now, research has revealed how baby names in Britain have become more culturally and linguistically diverse over the last 20 years. Analysis of the top baby names from 2004, 2014 and 2024 found today's most popular baby names come from a much wider range of countries and languages than they used to. The favourite baby names at the turn of the millennium were predominantly of English, Hebrew and Latin origin. Now, two decades later, Italian, Arabic, Norse, and even Scottish-Spanish names also top the list. Experts say parents now have a much broader frame of reference, and that there's a 'real shift' away from traditional choices. So, do you have one of these more multicultural names? In 2024, it was the seventh most popular name for newborn baby boys Analysis, carried out by English language classes platform Preply, showed the majority of the most popular names in 2004 were of English, Hebrew or Latin origin. These included Jack, Joshua, Daniel, Emily and Jessica. Other popular names from that era were of Greek, Germanic and Celtic origin. But fast-forward to 2024 and a range of other cultural names are also in the top 20 list. These include Isla, which is Scottish/Spanish, Luca, which is Italian, Freya, which is Norse, and Muhammad, which is Arabic. 'As a nation, we're much more exposed to and connected with other cultures than we've ever been,' a spokeswoman for Preply said. 'The media we consume, the communities we engage with online, and global migration, have all played a key role in this shift. 'Parents now have a much broader frame of reference. According to Preply, it'll take tourists just 20 minutes to walk between Seville's top five attractions. Plaza de Espana is Seville's top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor. Tourists can even take a boat out to explore the pretty city square. However, Britons might want to move fast if they want to explore the square. Seville's city officials have plans to charge an entry fee for it. Just a 10-minute walk from the Plaza de Espana, the Royal Alcazar of Seville is a stunning medieval Islamic palace that blends Moorish and Christian architecture, reports the Express. The palace's gardens are incredibly spectacular so it's worth pre-booking a ticket as they can sell out on the day. The city's Cathedral is just a short step from the Plaza and the Alcazar and it dates back to the 15th century. As you amble along, you'll encounter the Barrio Santa Cruz, Seville's historic district and one of its top five must-see spots. After soaking up the sights, don't miss out on sampling some tapas in this Andalusian city, which proudly proclaims itself as the birthplace of this beloved cuisine.
