Central residents urged to adhere to gun laws
Pretoria Central SAPS are encouraging residents to obtain the correct certification to carry firearms in light of a recent spate of illegal possession arrests. While expressing his approval over his station's recent successes, station commander Brigadier Hlengane Gibin Mashaba said illegal firearms pose a serious risk to public safety. 'We want to call on all people who have firearms to ensure they complete their firearm competency training, thus ensuring they meet the legal requirements to possess a firearm,' Mashaba said. In the most recent arrest, a 19-year-old was taken into custody after police recovered a firearm in his possession, which he did not have a permit for. A team led by Captain Nthuteng Mogotsi, consisting of Constable Itumeleng Kgasago, patrollers Thoko Nchabeleng, Samuel Mathato, and Mpho Chaka, were conducting stop-and-searches in the inner city. At around 23:00, they came across a white VW Polo on Eeufees Road. '[When] approaching the vehicle, the members requested permission to search the car. They recovered a calibre loaded with one round hidden in a cabin. Unfortunately, the suspect did not have a valid document to possess the firearm. Steps were taken to confiscate the firearm for further ballistic analysis, and the suspect was taken to the station and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm,' said Constable Thabang Nkhumise. The arrest came on June 17, a few days after two suspects had been arrested for possession of two unregistered firearms and another for the same charge in separate instances. The 19-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court pending further investigation. The other three suspects remain in custody pending investigation and to address verification. Nkhumise said the block around the station and magistrate's court has had a power outage for the past three days, delaying a lot of cases. Suspects due in court over gun possession charges
Two male suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate's Court this week after being apprehended with two illegal firearms last week in the CBD. The arrest came in on June 10 around 13:00, when the two suspects (aged 41 and 45) were stopped on the corner of Struben and Andries streets during patrols. Pretoria Central SAPS spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said the pair were taken into custody after officers searched their belongings. 'What seemed to be a daily routine in stop-and-search led to the discovery of the two firearms hidden in a backpack that the two suspects were carrying. As a result, two male suspects are behind bars after being found in possession of two firearms, namely a Model PMK-380 calibre with a magazine loaded with two live rounds,' Nkhumise said. Another successful arrest comes after one male suspect aged 38 was spotted and stopped at the corner of Struben Street and Eskia Mphahlele Drive on June 11 at around 11:15. A body search was conducted, and a 9mm firearm with a magazine loaded with 12 live rounds was found hidden around his waist. Vispol Head Colonel Maboea congratulated the team led by Captain Nthuteng Mogotsi, consisting of Sergeant Matlakala, Reservist Khumalo Lebelo, and two patrollers, Fannie Raseroka and Richard Masala, on the successful arrests. He thanked the Gauteng traffic and crime prevention wardens for their unwavering support and efforts in combatting crime in the inner city. The recovered firearms will be sent to ballistics for further analysis to check if they were used in the commission of other crimes. All suspects were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms with live ammunition and are expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. Suspect carjacker denied bail
A 25-year-old suspect was denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court for a case of possession of a stolen vehicle. The arrest took place on May 30, around 18:00, by the Pretoria Central SAPS's Crime Prevention Team in partnership with Tracker. Spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said the team received a lookout call via radio control. They followed the lead and shortly afterwards, and managed to corner the stolen vehicle on Eeufees Street, near the N14. 'All the relevant stakeholders were called to the scene. The suspect was later taken in for detention and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle while the vehicle was booked in at the exhibit store VIS unit. Upon profiling, it was discovered that the suspect has a pending case related to car stealing and possession of dagga with cases at other police stations within the province,' Nkhumise said. The team, consisting of three constables, namely Freedom Sambo, Nyiko Olifants, and Nhlayiso Zitha, and the tracker team, managed to corner the vehicle at the above-mentioned address. The vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD6 bakkie, had an estimated worth of R200 000. The station commander Brigadier Gibin Hlengani Mashaba welcomed the arrest and applauded all the role players for their efforts to put the suspect behind bars. He stated that the case has been allocated to the branch detectives, and they will ensure that the case receives a good conviction. Motorists are urged to be vigilant and very cautious of their surroundings, and also to take safety precautions while travelling at any time of the day. Police advised residents to avoid offering lifts, as this is also one of the leading factors causing hijackings. The suspect was remanded into custody and will reappear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court at a later date, pending further investigation. Central police host GBV awareness campaign
The Pretoria Central SAPS and the Department of Labour held an awareness event on May 29 aimed at discussing gender-based violence (GBV) after the release of the fourth quarter crime statistics. Crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year have indicated decreases in contact crimes for Pretoria Central, though the area remains a crime hotspot due to elevated incidents of serious crimes. In Pretoria Central, GBV-related crimes such as rape decreased by two counts (21 cases reported last year down to 19), and sexual offences decreased by four counts (6 to 2). One contact sexual offence was reported compared to none in the previous two quarters. The Central SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit visited department employees at their offices on Francis Baard Street to talk about GBV and issues of femicide. The station's spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise, accompanied by social crime prevention officer Warrant Officer Queen Mahlangu, provided the statistics and the implementation of strategies by the SAPS to assist victims when reporting such crimes. Other speakers took to the podium to educate the employees on different kinds of abuse and other related crimes. Attendees could raise their views and also engage in a debate. Pamphlets with information and contact details were handed out to the attendees. Station commander Brigadier Gibin Mashaba expressed his gratefulness to the department for engaging with employees, saying continued dialogues such as these are needed to break the social stigmas against GBV. 'We want to urge more departments within the inner city to partake in addressing social ills and a continuous effort to reach out to their employees. The only way to illuminate GBV is to instil a culture of whistleblowing by the community to protect victims and provide them with shelter and any psychological assistance,' Mashaba said.
