Andhra Pradesh government extends IPS officer Sanjay's suspension
Vijayawada: The state govt ordered the extension of senior IPS officer N Sanjay's suspension for a further period of 180 days, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. This decision was formalised through a government order (GO) on Tuesday. N Sanjay, a 1996-batch IPS officer, was initially placed under suspension on Dec 3, 2024. The suspension was based on allegations of misappropriation and misuse of public funds during his tenure as director general of the Andhra Pradesh state disaster response and fire services. He is also accused of irregularities while serving as additional director general of police, AP CID, specifically concerning funds allocated for training police personnel on the rights of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes under the Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989. A criminal case was registered by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Dec 24, 2024, under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation remains ongoing, with several witnesses yet to be examined and key documents pending collection, as per ACB. In light of the pending investigation and potential risk of the suspended officer influencing the process, the review committee, which met again on May 21, recommended the extension of the suspension. Acting on this advice, the state govt extended the suspension.

Madras HC seeks CCTV footage on Vadakadu violence in TN
Madurai , The Madras High Court on Thursday directed the officials concerned to provide CCTV footage and other evidence related to the attack on a group of Scheduled Caste members and vandalisation of their property in Vadakadu village in Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai district. Chastising the senior district officials for not visiting the place of clash, a division bench of Justices P Velmurugan and K K Ramakrishnan. reminded them that theirs was not "a white collar job" and that it was "unfair to take action only if a complaint was filed." "The truth would have emerged had the collector gone in disguise to the affected spot and reviewed the situation," the bench observed and ordered the administration to submit CCTV footage of the incidents from May 4 - 7 from the village. The reprimand followed a petition filed by one S Shanmugam, a resident of Thirumananjeri in Pudukottai, seeking a direction from the court for an inquiry into the Vadakadu clash, and ensure that the SC people were allowed to worship at the Vadakadu Mariamman temple. He prayed for the arrest of all the culprits with the help of CCTV footage and video recordings related to the clash and ensure appropriate compensation to the victims under the Prevention of Atrocities Act. He claimed that those belonging to the SC community were attacked during a festival at the Mariamman temple and their houses torched. Many were injured in the incidents. He alleged that the police have not arrested the real culprits in connection with the incident. Pudukkottai district Collector Aruna and Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta appeared in the court. The administration submitted that about ₹8.75 lakhs have been provided as interim relief to the victims and new houses would be built for those whose houses were damaged. It was also submitted that people from all communities were allowed to worship at the temple after the peace talks were conducted.

Police: Two booked for stopping Dalit man from entering temple
Two members of the Vokkaliga community were booked on Monday for allegedly barring a 26-year-old Dalit man from entering the Ram Anjaneya temple at Tumakuru district in Karnataka, police officers aware of the matter said on Monday, adding that caste tension flared in the area following the incident. The incident took place at Kavanadala village in Dodderi Hobli of Madhugiri taluk on Saturday. A video of the heated exchange between the Dalit man and members of the dominant community has gone viral on social media, they added. 'The Dalit man, Swaminath, submitted a complaint of atrocity against the accused on Monday. Based on his complaint, the two men belonging to the Vokkaliga community have been booked under the Prevention of Atrocities Act,' said additional superintendent of police C Gopal. Police identified the accused as Giriyanna Gowda (42) and Ananth Gowda (32). As tension spread in the area, a peace meeting was held by members of the Vokkaliga and Dalit communities on Sunday, police said. According to eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded when Swaminath attempted to enter the temple to offer prayers on Saturday evening. He was allegedly stopped by the Vokkaliga community members, who questioned his presence inside the temple. 'The accused told Swaminath that 'since ancient times, people of your caste (Scheduled Castes) have never entered the temple. Even now, you should not go inside',' said the complaint. 'Hitting back Swaminath told the accused, 'Everyone from the village is sitting inside. Why should I stay outside? How is it wrong to go in? Doesn't the Constitution provide equal rights to all? If you can go inside, why can't I? Don't you respect the Constitution',' police quoted the complainant as saying. 'The accused told Swaminath, 'Your people have never entered. If one is allowed, others will follow. You must not go inside',' the complaint added. Following the incident, the Swaminath initially filed a complaint at the Badavanahalli police station on Sunday. But after local villagers mounted pressure on him, he withdrew the complaint and also participated in the peace meeting on the same day. However, he again submitted a complaint on Monday, following which police registered a case against the two accused.
