Texas man pleads guilty to kidnapping child in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Texas man pleaded guilty Thursday to kidnapping a 3-year-old girl in 2021, according to U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona. Steven Holguin, 42, of El Paso, TX, pleaded guilty on conspiracy to commit kidnapping charges. A Birmingham police officer responded to a call regarding the kidnapping of a child on Nov. 4, 2021, according to the plea agreement. Family members said they believed that the child's uncle, Elis Salgado-Galindo, planned to take her to Mexico, where her father lives, or Honduras, where her father's family is located. 3-year-old girl found safe in Mississippi after being kidnapped from Ensley, 2 men charged After taking the child and leaving, an Amber Alert was issued along the Alabama/Mississippi State line. Rankin County and Mississippi Sheriff's Department issued a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched the description of Holguin's vehicle. Holguin, who was the driver, was instructed to exit the vehicle, and the other individuals along with the toddler were removed. Both men were taken into custody. Holguin was convicted in 2020 for conspiracy to transport aliens. He was sentenced to six months in federal prison and three years of supervised release. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man pleaded guilty to gun and drug charges Friday, according to Prim F. Escalona. Isiah Henley, 31, pleaded guilty to distribution to methamphetamine and fentanyl, possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, possession of a machine gun, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Tuscaloosa family mourns loss of 4-year-old son after police say they were hit by drunk driver According to court documents, in July and Aug. 2024, Henley sold methamphetamine and fentanyl to a confidential informant on three occasions. Henley also sold methamphetamine and fentanyl to an informant in Birmingham on Aug. 8, 2024. When agents attempted to arrest him at a residence, he fled from police, dropped a bag, and agents noticed that he had a firearm. He was ordered to drop his firearm, and he threw it into a vacant lot before being arrested. Law enforcement was able to recover the weapon and found it to include a Glock switch with an extended magazine that was fully loaded. Shelby County man sentenced to 15 years in prison for multiple robberies

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Shelby County man was sentenced 15 years in prison for multiple robberies, according to U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona. Dorian Bivins, 20, of Alabaster, was sentenced to 180 months in prison. Bivins pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act robbery and use of a firearm during a crime of violence in Sept. 2024. According to the plea agreement, Bivins attempted robberies of three businesses in Alabama over a span of 12 days in May and June 2023. Trussville man sentenced to 4 years for drug trafficking

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Trussville man was sentenced to four years in prison for drug trafficking, U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona announced. Antonio Ellis, 50, was sentenced to 48 months in prison. He pleaded guilty to possession with the intent to distribute cocaine in Oct. 2024. Birmingham Police arrest carjacking suspect on same day as incident According to the plea agreement, on May 9, 2023, a Trussville police officer observed a Ford F-450 traveling on I-59 and cross the outside fog line several times. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and during the stop, the officer could smell alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. Ellis was then asked to exit the vehicle. Ellis initially complied with the officer's requests, but he then attempted to walk away from the scene and refused to follow the officer's orders. Additional officers arrived and arrested him.
