India-US trade deal: Both countries in talks to finalise pact and reduction of tariff, says MEA responds to Oppn query
Th Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday, July 24, responded to a question linked to the 'reimposition of tariffs on Indian exports' by the United States, saying India and the US are working towards finalising the 'first tranche of a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).' The foreign ministry also said that the trade teams of both countries are presently engaged in active negotiations on the BTA and discussions are 'aimed at adopting an integrated approach to further strengthen and deepen bilateral trade relations, including through enhanced mutual market access, reduction of tariff and non-tariff barriers, and closer integration of supply chains.' The question came from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi who asked '(a) whether Government has taken note of the recent announcement by the United States administration regarding the reimposition of tariffs on Indian exports, including a proposed 26 percent duty on select sectors; (b) whether the issue of these tariffs was formally raised by the Indian delegation during the External Affairs Minister's visit to Washington from 30 June to 2nd July, 2025, for the Quad Ministerial Meeting.' Also Read | Explainer: Possible impact of Trumps reciprocal tariffs on India Responding to the query raised by the Opposition MP, MoS MEA Kirti Vardhan Singh said, 'On 2 April 2025, the US announced the imposition of additional ad valorem reciprocal duties on 185 countries (including the European Union). As per the order, a 10 per cent tariff was imposed on all countries effective 5 April 2025.' 'From 9 April 2025, this was to be revised to country-specific tariffs. The reciprocal tariff applicable to India was fixed at 26%. Subsequently, a 90-day pause, till 9 July 2025, was authorized with substantially lower reciprocal tariff of 10%. On 07 July 2025, the implementation date for the reciprocal tariffs was further extended from 9 July 2025 to 1 August 2025.'

/ Jul 19, 2025, 04:22PM IST Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi launched a fiery rebuttal to US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that a proposed US trade deal was behind the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Reacting to Trump's sensational statement that 'five jets were shot down' and the US defused the crisis through trade diplomacy, Chaturvedi wrote on X: 'If Trump keeps repeating the trade deal got India and Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire, then how is it that India-US don't have a trade deal yet?' She further slammed Pakistan, saying, 'Even America knows there's no trade deal with Pakistan, there's only a terror deal because that's the only thing Pakistan excels in.' Trump's unverified 'five jets downed' claim and portrayal of the US as peace broker has drawn criticism and disbelief in India, with leaders across parties questioning his credibility and motives.#priyankachaturvedi #donaldtrump #indiapakistan #tradedeal #ceasefireclaim #trumpjetsclaim #shivsenaubt #usindiarelations #pakterror #trumpspeech #toi #toibharat #bharat #trending #breakingnews #indianews

Priyanka Chaturvedi Slams Trump's Fresh India-Pakistan Ceasefire Claim
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday criticized former US President Donald Trump's recent claim that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, questioning his repeated references to a trade deal and noting that no such agreement exists between India and the US. 'If Donald Trump keeps repeating the trade deal got India Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire then how is it that India-US don't have a trade deal yet? Is that why POTUS keeps repeating it to build pressure on India? Since even America knows there's no trade deal with Pakistan there's only a terror deal because that's the only thing Pakistan excels in,' Chaturvedi said on X. If Donald Trump keeps repeating the trade deal got India Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire then how is it that India-US don't have a trade deal yet? Is that why POTUS keeps repeating it to build pressure on India? Since even America knows there's no trade deal with Pakistan… — Priyanka Chaturvedi(@priyankac19) July 19, 2025 US President Donald Trump on Friday once again asserted his intervention led to the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan following "Operation Sindoor" in May 2025. "We have ended a lot of wars. And these were big wars. India and Pakistan were at it, and they were back and forth, and it was getting larger and larger, and we got it resolved through trade," Trump said. Trump also claimed that "four or five" jets were shot down during the conflict. These remarks, made for the second time this week, contradict India's consistent denials of any US mediation. In fact, aircraft were being shot out of the skies. Five, five, four or five, but I believe five jets were shot down actually," although he did not mention which country's planes were being referred to. India On Mediation Claims India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire with Pakistan after the successful completion of Operation Sindoor was not the result of any external mediation, but rather occurred when Pakistan's DGMO reached out to his Indian counterpart. Pahalgam Terror Attack And Operation Sindoor On April 22, Pakistan-backed terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen while leaving several others injured. In retaliation, the Indian Armed Forces on May 7 launched precision strikes on nine terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir under 'Operation Sindoor,' killing over 100 dreaded terrorists and avenging the loss of lives in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

‘Why Glorify Made In China EV?' Sena MP Denounces Tesla's India Ride
Last Updated: Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized Maharashtra CM Fadnavis for attending Tesla's Mumbai showroom launch, questioning the benefit of importing taxed, made-in-China EVs. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Wednesday criticised the entry of electric vehicle giant Tesla's entry into Indian market saying that what's the need of celebrating the entry of a 'glorified, highly taxed EV vehicle that is made in China." She further questioned the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the launch event of Tesla's first showroom in India. While taking a jibe at the Maharashtra government over the 'great breakthrough" launch, the Rajya Sabha MP said that the presence of Fadnavis at the launch of a glorified, highly taxed EV vehicle that is made in China in India was 'cringe". She further questioned how Tesla's entry in India would contribute to India's innovation industry. 'And for Maharashtra CM to inaugurate a car showroom/dealer store makes it more cringe. What are we celebrating? Entry of a glorified, highly taxed EV vehicle that is made in China? How is it contributing to India's innovation industry? The white man complex is real," Sena MP said in a post on X. In an earlier post, Chaturvedi said that customers will pay more for a made-in-China car, and the government is claiming it as some 'great breakthrough". 'India was aiming to bring the manufacturing of Tesla cars to the country for the domestic market; however, we have been made to believe we should be happy with a first showroom with made-in-China imported cars. Whatever duty is levied, truth is customer pays more for a made in China car and leaders in power make it sound like some great breakthrough," the post read. Earlier on Tuesday, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed that if the Centre had not debated on customs duties, the Tesla showroom in Mumbai would have opened in 2021. 'It's a good thing that an electric car showroom is being opened. If the central government had not debated the customs duty, then the showroom would have opened in 2021 only." He added that it is due to the policy for electric vehicles (EVs) made by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in 2021 that the EV companies are coming to Maharashtra. 'The EV policy that we made gives EVs major support in Maharashtra, and due to this, many companies are coming here," Thackeray said. Tesla's Entry Into Indian Market Tesla officially entered Indian market on Tuesday with the opening of its first showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex. Devendra Fadnavis attended the inauguration ceremony and said that the American company chose the 'right city and state". 'This is more than just an inauguration — it's a statement that Tesla has chosen the right city and state," said the Maharashtra Chief Minister. 'It is a matter of great joy for us that Tesla has launched its first experience in India in Mumbai. Tesla is establishing a logistics and servicing system here. Four big charging stations are also being established by them. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra as the state has become a leader in electric mobility. Tesla is launching its Model Y in India. Maharashtra has the most dynamic electric mobility policy. I believe Maharashtra will be a preferred destination when they decide to do manufacturing in India," he added. Tesla revealed the prices for its electric vehicles, stating that Model T's on-road price will be listed at Rs 61 lakh. The rear-wheel drive version will cost Rs 59.89 lakh.
