2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame: Inductees, Snubs, Surprises as Antonio Gates, Jared Allen headline class

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025 is set to be enshrined Saturday, August 2, at 1 PM ET in Canton, Ohio. Headlined by legendary tight end Antonio Gates and defensive game-wrecker Jared Allen, the class features just four modern-era inductees – a number that's drawn attention ahead of enshrinement. Let's dive into a breakdown of this year's class, names waiting for enshrinement, how the selection process works, and more. RELATED: 2025 NFL Schedule: When does the NFL Season start? When is HOF Game? Who is in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class? (in alphabetical order) Eric Allen, CB Allen played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, and the Oakland Raiders across 14 seasons (1988-2001). He amassed 54 interceptions (34 with the Eagles) throughout his career, making him a stalwart of his team's defensive backfields. A member of the 1991 'Gang Green' Philadelphia defense, Allen played alongside 2006 Hall of Fame inductee Reggie White. Jared Allen, DE Allen spent the majority of his 12-year career with the Minnesota Vikings (2008-2013), finishing his career with 136 sacks, good for 12th all-time in NFL history since sacks became an official statistic in 1982. After his stint in Minneapolis, he played for the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers before ultimately retiring as a Viking with four First-Team All-Pro honors and five Pro-Bowl selections. Antonio Gates, TE Gates signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, where he spent his entire 16-year career (2003-2018). He leads all tight ends in NFL history with 116 career touchdown receptions, 89 of which were thrown by longtime Chargers signal-caller Philip Rivers. Sterling Sharpe, TE The sole inductee from the Seniors, Coach and contributor categories, Sharpe played seven NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers, earning five Pro Bowl selections and three First-Team All-Pro honors. Sharpe's induction brings more history to the Hall, as he and his younger brother, Shannon Sharpe, are the first pair of brothers to be enshrined. Why is the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class small? This year's four-member class, the smallest allowed under the Hall's current bylaws, is the fewest number of inductees in a single class since 2005. Last year, the Hall updated its bylaws 'to help ensure that membership in the Hall of Fame remains elite.' The new bylaws call for an extra layer of selection, where 15 modern-era finalists are narrowed to seven. Voters then select five votes between the remaining finalists, and any receiving at least 80 percent 'yes' votes earn induction, leaving 3-5 candidates to be inducted. For seniors, coaches, and contributors, voters select three of five candidates with only those who reach the 80 percent threshold being enshrined, capping the total number of inductees to 4-8. Who will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026? Bill Belichick, head coach: New England Patriots (2000-2023) Drew Brees, QB: San Diego Chargers (2001-2005), New Orleans Saints (2006-2020) Philip Rivers, QB: San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers (2004-2019), Indianapolis Colts (2020) Frank Gore, RB: San Francisco 49ers (2005-2014), Indianapolis Colts (2015-2017), Miami Dolphins (2018), Buffalo Bills (2019), New York Jets (2020) Larry Fitzgerald, WR: Arizona Cardinals (2004-2020) What is the Pro Football Hall of Fame's waiting period? Players become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame five years after retiring from the NFL, while coaches, following a 2024 rule change, are now eligible just one year after stepping away from full-time coaching. Was Eli Manning voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Eli Manning was not selected in his first year of eligibility. The two-time Super Bowl MVP-winning quarterback and career New York Giant was ultimately left out, given the debate surrounding his regular-season record and lack of consistently elite statistics. When will Ben Roethlisberger or Bill Belichick be eligible for Pro Football Hall of Fame induction? Roethlisberger, who retired after the 2021 season, becomes eligible in 2027 under the five-year waiting rule for players. Belichick, assuming he remains out of coaching in the NFL, would be eligible in 2026 after the coaching waiting period was shortened to one year. When is the 2025 NFL Hall of Fame Game? The 2025 Hall of Fame game takes place this Thursday, July 31, in Canton, Ohio between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions. Live coverage begins on NBC and Peacock at 7:00 PM ET.

Titans waive Treylon Burks after franchise-haunting trade

More than three years after the fact, the A.J. Brown trade keeps getting worse for the Titans. The Titans announced Monday that wide receiver Treylon Burks, whom the team selected No. 18 overall after acquiring the pick as part of the Brown trade, has been waived. Burks was waived with injury designation after hurting his collarbone during practice on Saturday, and if he clears waivers, he'll wind up back on Tennessee's injured reserve. Advertisement 3 Treylon Burks at Titans training camp on July 26. AP The Titans drafted Burks out of Arkansas with the hope that the 6-foot-2, 225-pound wideout could eventually replace Brown, who already had one Pro-Bowl appearance and two seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards under his belt. Instead, Burks never proved himself to be an impactful NFL player. Advertisement He hauled in 444 yards for one touchdown his rookie year, but notched just 221 yards in 2023 and missed most of the 2024 season with an ACL injury. The Titans signed former University of Tennessee wide receiver Ramel Keyton to fill Burks' roster spot. Tennessee dealt Brown to the Eagles on the night of the 2022 draft in exchange for the No. 18 pick (Burks) and the 101st overall selection, which they traded. 3 Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks (16) makes a catch during minicamp at Nissan Stadium. Steve Roberts-Imagn Images Advertisement Brown has been terrific since arriving in Philadelphia, notching back-to-back Pro-Bowl nods in 2022 and 2023 and winning the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2025. In his three seasons in Philly, he has accumulated 4,031 receiving yards and hauled in 25 touchdowns. Frustrated Titans fans took to social media at the news of Burks' getting waived, with many teeing off on then-general manager Jon Robinson. 3 A.J. Courtland Sutton lands $92 million extension with Broncos

Cortland Sutton isn't leaving Denver anytime soon. The standout wide receiver agreed to a four-year, $92 million extension with the Broncos on Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, which positions the 29-year-old to be the team's WR1 for the foreseeable future. Sutton has spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the Broncos, and he has solidified himself as one of the better receivers in football in that stretch. Advertisement Now, he'll continue his partnership with second-year quarterback Bo Nix, who started all 17 games in his rookie year. Courtland Sutton practicing with the Broncos on May 29. AP Sutton had not been a full participant in training camp practices leading up to the signing, but Broncos head coach Sean Payton offered reassurance that an agreement would be reached. Advertisement 'He's gotten limited reps, and I think we're close,' Payton said after Monday's practice. 'I'm not going to speak ahead of it, but we're real close on a contract. I think our goal, when he and I met [general manager George Paton] all along was this coming Monday. So I think there'll be something fairly soon there.' Just a few hours later, the deal was struck. When Nix was told of the deal by The Athletic at training camp, he said he was 'absolutely' happy for the wide receiver. Sutton had been entering the final year of his four-year, $60.8 million deal, which he signed in 2021. Advertisement Courtland Sutton celebrates a touchdown on Dec. 28, 2024. Getty Images A 6-foot-4, 216-pound wideout, Sutton hauled in 81 receptions for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns last season on a career-high 135 targets. That marked the first time the Brenham, Texas native had eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark since 2019, when he made his lone Pro-Bowl appearance. Advertisement Sutton has enjoyed a consistent tenure with Denver, though, making at least 50 catches in each of his past four seasons. He'll be a key piece to the puzzle as the Broncos look to build upon a 10-7 campaign in 2024, which ended with a blowout loss to the Bills in the wild-card round.

NFL Analyst Utters Bold Prediction For Cowboys Star Dak Prescott

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Looking at the entire NFC East, Dak Prescott is one of the most intriguing players heading into the 2025 season. As he prepares to make a comeback, one analyst uttered a bold prediction for the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. Back in 2023, Prescott looked to be cementing himself among the league's elite quarterbacks. He put together an impressive campaign in the regular season that nearly landed him MVP honors. However, things ended up going off the rails for him in 2024 when he suffered a season-ending injury after just eight starts. Ahead of training camp, Prescott proclaimed to the media that he is back to 100%. Now that the action is underway, he's officially begun what he hopes to be a bounce-back year. When it comes to the star QB's production, he feels there's a reality where he notches over 5,000 passing yards. "Your defense isn't very good, you're going to give up a lot of points. That means you're going to have to throw the football to stay in games," Broussard said. "You should put up huge numbers. I think you might throw for well over 5,000 yards." .@Chris_Broussard delivers some strong motivation for Dak Prescott this season: 'I think you might throw for well over 5,000 yards!' — First Things First (@FTFonFS1) July 24, 2025 Based on Prescott's track record in the NFL, this bold prediction is somewhat realistic. As Broussard mentioned, the Cowboys are likely going to remain a pass-heavy team this season. While they've made some upgrades in the backfield, it's doubtful Dallas has a consistent attack on the ground. Knowing he's going to be getting up a lot of pass attempts each week, it's possible Prescott at least comes close to this mark. Especially considering the upgraded cast of talent around him. Tight end Jake Ferguson is healthy and eager to get back to the level of production from his Pro-Bowl season, and Dallas acquired wide receiver George Pickens in the offseason. Prescott has no shortage of viable targets around him, which should result in another strong season from him. Also read: NFL Insider Reveals Shocking Update on Dallas Cowboys Star Prescott has never eclipsed 5,000 yards, but he's come close on a few occasions. He nearly did it in 2019, finishing the regular season with 4,902. His second-highest mark came in 2023 with just over 4,500. If he's able to return to the caliber of player he was pre-injury, Prescott might have a chance to make Broussard's prediction a reality. Giants' Brian Burns, Wan'Dale Robinson shaken up after scary collision at training camp

Brian Burns and Wan'Dale Robinson headed to the locker room at Giants training camp Friday after a big collision during practice. Trainers rushed onto the field to tend to the two players, The Post's Ryan Dunleavy reported. The injury scare happened when Burns, the two-time Pro-Bowl linebacker, and Robinson, a wide receiver entering his fourth NFL season, collided during a play. Both players walked off the field and into the facility following the big hit. Robinson got up first, with his hand on his lower back. Brian Burns at Giants training camp on July 23.
