Minor girl dies two days after wedding in Erode; man arrested

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Sathyamangalam taluk on Sunday (July 20, 2025) on charges of marrying a minor girl, who died two days after the wedding. The police said the accused Sakthivel, a daily-wage labourer from Thandampalayam village in Bhavanisagar, had allegedly lured the 17-year-old girl, a school dropout, and sexually assaulted her. He reportedly married her on July 15 and brought her to his residence. On the following day, the girl developed abdominal pain and was taken to the Government Hospital in Sathyamangalam. As her condition worsened, she was referred to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where she died on July 17. Acting on a complaint filed by the girl's mother, the Punjai Puliyampatti police registered a case and conducted an inquiry. Initial investigations revealed that the girl had been given medication purchased from a local pharmacy to relieve her symptoms. The police booked Sakthivel under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. He was produced before a magistrate in Sathyamangalam and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigations are under way to determine the exact cause of the girl's death.

Tamil Nadu Cops Seek Public Help In Child Rape Case, Post Photos Of Suspect

Chennai: The local police in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district have released images of an unidentified man and appealed to the public for information, nearly a week after a 10-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly sexually assaulted. The disturbing incident has ignited serious concerns over child safety and the efficacy of protection systems in the state. CCTV footage, which has since circulated, shows the man stalking the minor girl before forcibly lifting her, according to initial police accounts. The police have formally registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and multiple special teams have been formed to trace the perpetrator, though no arrests have been made yet. "We have formed special teams and expect a breakthrough soon," a senior police officer told NDTV. The Tiruvallur Police had shared pictures of the suspect on their official social media, urging public assistance to identify him: The suspect in the photos/video is involved in a heinous crime of sexually assaulting a child. It is requested to communicate any information pertaining to him on 9952060948 — Thiruvallur District Police (@TNTVLRPOLICE) July 20, 2025 Child rights activists have voiced profound alarm, highlighting the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers children face in public spaces and the existing gaps in surveillance, community vigilance, and awareness. "Every time a child is harmed, it's not just a law and order issue - it's a failure of the system meant to protect them," said an advocate who preferred to remain anonymous. The incident has also drawn political condemnation, with the AIADMK slamming the ruling DMK saying "There is no safety for women under the DMK rule". Former state BJP chief K Annamalai had earlier urged immediate action, warning that the suspect's freedom poses a continued threat to society. The crime comes amid a worrying rise in offenses against women and children across the state. The state police and the ruling DMK maintain that stringent action is being taken in each case. The authorities have pointed to recent fast-tracked trials and convictions - such as the life sentence awarded in the Anna University sexual assault case and another in which a pregnant woman was assaulted on a moving train - as evidence of their commitment to delivering justice.

According to police, the accused had been working as a construction labourer in Guwahati and had allegedly abused the minor on July 16. Officer-in-charge of the designated police station, Uttam Tamang, said the accused had fled the scene immediately after committing the crime, before a case was registered against him on the same day, following a complaint filed by the girl's mother. Following his arrest, the accused was brought back to Guwahati and was produced before the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (Metro). Arunachal minister reiterates state govts commitment to ensure child safety

Agency: Itanagar, July 20 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Women and Child Development minister Dasanglu Pul has expressed deep concern over the recent child abuse case reported in Lower Dibang Valley district of the state, and reiterated the state government's commitment to ensuring justice and safety of children. In a meeting convened with key child welfare stakeholders at Roing on Saturday, Pul assured full government support to the victims and their families, an official statement said. The stakeholders include members of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), and the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of the district. 'My heart goes out to the victims and their families. We stand united to ensure justice and healing. No child should ever feel unsafe," the minister said, underscoring the importance of coordinated action in such cases. At least eight minor girls were subjected to physical abuse in a private school at Roing, by a migrant youth from neighbouring Assam, who was later lynched by a mob on July 11. The 19-year-old man, identified as Riaz-Ul Kurim from Bongaigaon in Assam, was taken into police custody on Friday after it came to light that he had allegedly sexually assaulted several girls of a school, police had said. The parents of the girls, who filed a complaint with the school authorities, had nabbed the youth and thrashed him before police rescued him and took him into custody. However, a mob barged into the police station, dragged the youth outside and beat him up. As he was rescued and taken to the hospital, they followed him and thrashed him again, ultimately leading to his death. The youth used to work at a construction site near the school, police said. The minister also welcomed the state cabinet's recent approval to implement the 'Support Person' provision under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The initiative aims to provide emotional and procedural assistance to child victims during police and court processes. 'Children facing such trauma often feel scared, confused, and isolated. This important step ensures they receive emotional and procedural support, bringing us closer to a truly child-friendly justice system, one that protects, empowers, and upholds the dignity of our youngest citizens," the minister said. The move is being seen as a significant milestone in Arunachal Pradesh's efforts to build a robust and compassionate child protection framework.
