Cong suggests no trust move against govt, BJP says it will backfire
1 2 3 4 Bhubaneswar: Revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari on Thursday warned that any attempt by the opposition to introduce a no-confidence vote against the Mohan Charan Majhi-led govt would backfire. This comes in response to OPCC chief Bhakta Charan Das's suggestion that his party might consider such a move due to increasing concerns over rising crimes against women in the state. "We are prepared to face any motion. We will highlight the govt's achievements. It will boomerang for them," Pujari said in response to the Cong leader's statement. Bhakta on Wednesday said the principal opposition party, BJD, should bring a no-trust motion against the BJP govt, which his party would support. Otherwise, BJD should support such a move by the Congress. Stating that the current govt is just one year and three months old, while Congress ruled Odisha for 40 years and BJD and its earlier avatar of Janata Dal governed the state for 35 years, Pujari said they have much to answer. "I would suggest they better come prepared with sufficient homework. We are ready," he said, adding that the track record of the two parties on women's issues is very bad, while the current govt has been very proactive in taking action. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! "Let the time come. BJD will take an appropriate decision keeping in mind people's and party's interest," he said. In the 147-member house, BJP has 78 members. While BJD has 51 MLAs, Congress has 14, besides four others. In case of a voting, BJP is comfortably placed, though Congress would use such a motion to draw attention to the perceived rise in crimes against women in recent days.

26 ‘illegal' Bangladeshi immigrants arrested in Meghalaya by BSF; four others held for aiding their illegal entry
At least 26 Bangladeshis were apprehended by the Border Security Force near the international border in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district. Officials said on Tuesday they were arrested for entering Indian 'without valid documents'. According to a PTI report, four persons were also nabbed for facilitating the illegal entry of the Bangladeshi nationals, they said. Personnel of the 22nd Battalion intercepted three vehicles travelling from Purakhasia to Barengapara along the state highway-12 near Matchokpara on Monday after specific intelligence inputs were received, an official said. "During checking, it was found that the Bangladeshi nationals were being assisted by Indian facilitators in an infiltration attempt. All individuals were taken to custody for questioning," he said. The number of Bangladeshi nationals, apprehended in Meghalaya in 2025 so far, has risen to at least 46, according to BSF data. Earlier this year, seven Bangladeshis were apprehended in East Khasi Hills, five in South Garo Hills, and four each in West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hill, the PTI report said. The BSF termed Monday's operation a major success in its ongoing efforts to curb cross-border crimes and infiltration along the India-Bangladesh frontier. "This operation reflects the unwavering vigilance and operational commitment of our personnel in safeguarding national security," a BSF spokesperson said. Further investigation is underway in collaboration with the Meghalaya Police, the report quoted the spokesperson as saying. Odisha's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari on July 10 said that as many as 335 of the 444 people held in Jharsuguda district on suspicion of being Bangladeshis were found possessing fake Indian documents. He asserted that the BJP government in Odisha would not allow the state to become a "shelter home" for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Pujari, who held a meeting with senior officials, including the northern division revenue divisional commissioner, Jharsuguda collector and IG of the region, told PTI, "We found that 335 of the 444 people held for verification on suspicion of being Bangladeshis were possessing fake Indian documents. They all have Aadhar card, voter card and other documents showing them as residents of West Bengal." "We have decided to hand over these people to the district collectors of their respective places to which they claim to belong in West Bengal. Let the West Bengal government take whatever action they want to," the minister said, adding that there is a conspiracy to push illegal Bangladeshis into Odisha from the adjoining state.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place in the central prison last week.(AFP FILE) No one was injured in the incident which took place in the central prison last week, they said. The police have registered a case against seven persons, including Pujari, for indulging in the fight, the officials said. The incident occurred on July 6 after a heated argument over an inmate spreading his legs when a prisoner from another group was passing through an area in a barrack, an official said. As it was creating a hurdle in walking, the prisoner objected, following which the person who had spread his legs abused the former. This led to a scuffle between the two groups, he said. Pujari had tried to intervene, but was beaten up by members of the other group, the official said. The gangster and his associates also beat up inmates of the other group, he said. Priest Not Landowner, Can't Claim Temple Property: Chhattisgarh High Court
Last Updated: The bench of Justice Bibhu Datta Guru underscored that a pujari is merely a grantee with the limited duty of offering prayers and managing temple rituals. The Chhattisgarh High Court recently observed that a pujari (priest) is not the owner of temple land and cannot claim proprietary rights over it. Court dismissed a writ petition filed by the Shri Vindhyavasini Maa Bilaimata Pujari Parishad Committee challenging the authority of the Vindhyavasini Mandir Trust Samiti to manage the affairs of the temple and its land. The bench of Justice Bibhu Datta Guru, while hearing the matter, underscored that a pujari is merely a grantee with the limited duty of offering prayers and managing temple rituals. 'The law is clear on the distinction that the Pujari is not a Kashtkar Mourushi…He cannot be thus treated as a Bhumiswami," the court said, clarifying the legal distinction between religious service and property ownership. In 2003, an order was issued by the Tahsildar of Dhamtari, who had directed that the petitioner's name be entered into the land records of the temple trust. That order was overturned by the Sub-Divisional Officer (Revenue), and the petitioner's subsequent appeals to the Additional Commissioner and the Board of Revenue were also rejected. The petitioner then approached the high court under Article 227 of the Constitution, seeking to quash the Board of Revenue's 2015 order. However, the court observed that the petitioner body was not even a party to the original proceedings before the Board and hence lacked legal standing to maintain the writ. More critically, the court referred to a 1989 judgment by the Civil Judge, Class-II, Dhamtari, which had conclusively declared the Vindhyavasini Mandir Trust Samiti as a duly registered body since 1974, entrusted with managing the temple's affairs. That judgment had attained finality and was never challenged before a higher court. The single judge bench emphasised that temple properties are not ancestral or personal properties of pujaris, and any attempt by a priest to claim ownership is an act of mismanagement. 'If the Pujari claims proprietary rights over the property of the temple, it is an act of mismanagement, and he is not fit to remain in possession or to continue as a Pujari," the court noted. Court concluded that merely possessing a lease or patta does not entitle the petitioner to assert ownership or control over temple assets. The lease granted in 1985 was already subject to the civil court's decision from 1989. Finding no merit in the petitioner's arguments, the high court dismissed the writ petition, noting that the challenge was sans substratum.
