Kannada Kasturi translation software will be launched soon, says Bilimale
Karwar: Purushottama Bilimale, chairman of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), announced that the Kannada Kasturi software, which translates from English to Kannada with precision, will soon be made available for public use. Speaking to the media at the district commissioner's office here on Thursday, he said there are many errors when translating from English to Kannada using Google, and to address this, the Kannada Kasturi software was developed. It will provide highly accurate translations and will initially be available to Vidhana Soudha officials before being released to the public. Currently, there are only 20 font designs in Kannada, but 200 new designs are being prepared, which will be completed by Nov, he added. The KDA has prepared 500 famous Kannada slogans, and by Nov 1, 92 of these will be installed at key locations in Vidhana Soudha. All 500 slogans will be sent to all districts with instructions to display them in all govt offices. He also mentioned that there are about 230 minor languages in the state, and a committee will be formed to empower them. He added that a request was submitted to the Union minister of culture and senior officials of the department of archaeology to install plaques in Kannada at more than 5,000 historical sites in the state, highlighting their significance. There are 3,000 schools in the state, which are a century old, and reports on the progress of these schools and their alumni are being prepared. Additionally, 17,000 schools do not have accounts, and the education department should create accounts for these schools, he noted. In this year's SSLC examination, more than 200,000 students failed in Kannada, and a separate committee will be formed to investigate the reasons for the failures, with a report to be submitted to the govt within three months. Due to Karwar district's proximity to the Goa border, steps will be taken to organise a border festival at the end of this year, he said. It was also mentioned that the All India Kannada Literary Conference was held in this region 60 years ago, and there will be a push for the next conference to be held here, with requests made to the chief minister, the minister of Kannada and culture, and the State Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Dr Santosh Hanagallu, secretary, Yakub Khader Gulwadi, member of KDA and BN Vasare, district president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, were present.

KDA for Kannada information boards at tourist places, monuments
Chairman of Kannada Development Authority (KDA), Purushottama Bilimale, on Tuesday, said that they are asking district administrations in the State to set up display boards with basic information in Kannada at tourist places and monuments. Addressing the press in Udupi, Mr. Bilimale said that there were many tourist attractions in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts that lacked Kannada information boards highlighting the significance of those places. Many such places had boards only in English, he added. 'Let there be boards in Kannada, English and Hindi,' he said. The KDA addressed the matter in a meeting with Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on December 17, 2024. The Union Minister was apprised of the need to display boards in regional languages, Mr. Bilimale said. Mr. Bilimale said that during his meeting with the district administration in Udupi on Tuesday, he drew the attention of both the tourism department and the Deputy Commissioner to the display of Kannada boards. The Deputy Commissioner was asked to hold meetings with pro-Kannada organisations at least once in two or three months, he said. Kannada Bhavan in Udupi Mr. Bilimale said that Udupi city is likely to get a Kannada Bhavan. It required 11 cents of land to build the bhavan. The proposal to construct the building has been pending for three years. Once the Udupi Urban Development Authority gives its approval, the proposal is likely to be a reality. Constructing the building might cost ₹5 crore, he said. He said that KDA has apprised the Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, of the need to post Kannada-speaking staff in bank branches throughout the State. The KDA chairman said that government schools in the State have been instructed to register their land in their names with the RTCs to prevent encroachments. In Udupi district, eight such schools will have to get their RTCs.

Kannada Development Authority to come up with ‘Bhasha neeti' soon: Purushottama Bilimale
Chairman of Kannada Development Authority (KDA), Purushottama Bilimale, said on Tuesday that the KDA will draft a 'Bhasha neeti', a language policy for the State. Speaking to the press in Udupi, he said that the State has an education policy but not a language policy. Even India does not have a language policy. 'A committee constituted by the authority is now framing the draft of the policy. It has already collected data on 230 languages spoken in Karnataka,' Mr. Bilimale said. He said that KDA will, within a year, come up with its recommendations on what the government, district administrations and education department should do to save so many languages, including the minor ones, in the State. Mr. Bilimale hailed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, saying that it has recognised the importance of regional and local languages, as well as the mother tongue, in the overall development of a child. 'National Education Policy recommends teaching in the regional language of a State, speaking with students in the local language, and, if given an opportunity, including the mother tongue in the curriculum.' Mr. Bilimale said that the NEP came into force in Karnataka, but not its recommendations. Its original objective related to languages failed to take shape in the State.
