Shah Rukh Khan complained all hit songs of debut Deewana went to Rishi Kapoor, Nadeem Shravan didn't trust a newcomer: Sameer

Don't we all remember Shah Rukh Khan making a memorable entry in Mumbai and Bollywood, riding a bike across the city, lip-syncing to 'Koi Na Koi Chahiye' in his 1992 debut film, Raj Kanwar's romantic drama Deewana? However, initially, Shah Rukh didn't have that song, or for that matter, any songs in Deewana. All the songs were picturized on Rishi Kapoor and the late Divya Bharti. Veteran lyricist Sameer, who wrote the songs of the film, recently recalled Shah Rukh approaching him before the filming, requesting to write a song for him. 'When I was writing Deewana, most of the songs were filmed on Rishi Kapoor. After hearing the songs, when Shah Rukh met me, he said, 'Please give me one or two hit songs too. All songs are for Rishi bhaiya,'' said Sameer. In the interview with DD Urdu, Sameer added that Nadeem Saifi of the music composer duo Nadeem-Shravan initially didn't have too much trust in Shah Rukh because he was a newcomer. 'Pehle Nadeem ko laga naya-naya launda hai, kya karega maloom nahi (He's a newcomer, not sure how he'd do it). Then he thought the boy looks good, so let's do something for him,' added Sameer. That's how Shah Rukh got two songs — his intro track 'Koi Na Koi Chahiye' and his romantic song with Bharti, 'Aisi Deewangi.' 'His career reached a different level altogether with those two songs and that film,' said Sameer, adding that Shah Rukh did call him up after the film's success to thank the lyricist. 'In my time, Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan started their struggle in the film industry with me. I've spent so many nights together with Aamir sitting at Mansoor Khan's home,' recalled Sameer. Aamir, who made his debut with Ketan Mehta's 1984 coming-of-age film Holi, got his breakthrough in Bollywood with his cousin Mansoor's 1988 directorial debut romantic drama Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. 'We had such close relations. I used to meet Shah Rukh regularly. I used to go for dinner to the place of Salman's father, great writer Salim Khan. He's a wonderful person, it used to feel so good to talk to him. All of us got success at around the same time. We also had great contributions in each other's success. The actors needed good music, we needed good performers. When the time is right, everything falls into place,' added Sameer. After Deewana, Sameer wrote several other popular songs for Shah Rukh, including the tracks of Anjaam (1994), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Baadshah (1999), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), and More Piya in Devdas (2002).

Anupam Kher recalls shutting down Aamir Khan on Dil He Ke Manta Nahin sets ‘with an English phrase': ‘He complained to Mahesh Bhatt'

Anupam Kher and Aamir Khan have most famously worked in three films — Indra Kumar's Dil (1990), Yash Chopra's Parampara (1993), and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991). At the time of filming the Mahesh Bhatt directorial, Aamir was on the cusp of becoming a superstar, having already delivered hits like Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and Dil. Kher feels that's probably why Aamir had a disagreement with him on the sets of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, while filming the climax. 'In the climax of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, the father tells his daughter to run away from the wedding. The moment was very exaggerated,' recalled Kher, who played Seth Dharamchand, father to the bride, played by Pooja Bhatt. 'I was fully ready to portray it, but Aamir Khan complained to Mahesh Bhatt saab about my interpretation. He found it wrong and different. Bhatt saab added fuel to the matter and told me about Aamir's comment. I used an English phrase for Aamir Khan to shut him down,' added Kher, who wanted to remind Aamir he's a gold medallist from the National School of Drama, unlike Aamir who isn't a trained actor. 'Aamir was upset with me throughout the film. He was at that stage of becoming Aamir Khan, which he wanted to become. All my love for him,' said Kher. Aamir gained more popularity right after Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin with Mansoor's 1994 cult college caper Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar the following year. Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin marked the first time Aamir worked with Mahesh Bhatt. They followed it up with the 1993 romantic comedy Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. Meanwhile, Bhatt gave Kher his big break in Bollywood with his 1984 relationship drama Saaransh. Post that, they collaborated for Janam (1985), Kaash (1987), Thikana (1987), Kabzaa (1988), Daddy (1989), Awaargi (1990), Gumrah (1993), Tadipaar (1993), Papa Kahte Hain (1996), and Chaahat (1996). In a new, exclusive interview with SCREEN, Kher claimed that seasoned actors like him and Neena Gupta can perform even on their feet because of their education at NSD and experience in theatre. 'Without realizing, we've worked like theatre in this film (Metro… In Dino). Even in the case of Shiv Shastri Balboa, we did that. That film can be adapted into a very good play. So that's the advantage of being experienced, educated actors. We can incorporate our experiences into these films which we probably can't in others,' said Kher. Kher is also returning to direction 23 years after Om Jai Jagdish with Tanvi the Great, a coming-of-age film about an autistic girl's dream to join the Indian Army. Kher also plays a supporting role in the movie.
