Paddy Power offer: Bet £5 on Epsom Derby and get £30 free bets

Paddy Power is offering new customers £30 in free bets when they bet on the Epsom Oaks using promo code YSKAST Paddy Power is no stranger to the big horse racing action and the Epsom Oaks will be a big part of their calendar especially with the new customer offer they on. Right now, new customers can enjoy £30 in free bets when they sign-up and bet £5 on the Epsom Oaks this week. The Oaks, a distinguished Group 1 flat race for three-year-old fillies, stands as a testament to the rich tradition of British horse racing. Held at Epsom and managed by the Jockey Club, this race spans an arduous distance of one mile, four furlongs, and six yards. Since its first run in 1779, when Bridget claimed victory, The Oaks has firmly established itself as a highlight of the racing calendar. As one of the five annual Classic races, The Oaks holds the honour of being the second oldest, with only the St Leger preceding it. Intriguingly, it predates even the renowned Derby by a year, enhancing its historical significance. The origins of The Oaks trace back to a gathering in 1778 at an estate near Epsom Downs. It was here that the idea for this iconic race was conceived, lending the race its name. Lord Derby, a pivotal figure in racing history who hosted this gathering, also owned Bridget, the filly who won the inaugural race. Throughout its storied history, The Oaks has been the stage for many unforgettable performances. One standout moment came in 2017 when Enable stormed to victory. Her win at The Oaks was just the beginning of an extraordinary career that saw her triumph in other major races such as the Irish Oaks, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks, and the illustrious Prix De L'Arc de Triomphe. Billionaire owner's brutal put-down of racing sheikh in ongoing public feud

Mike Repole shared a video of Sheikh Fahad Al Thani falling off a horse in a charity race at Newmarket after he stuck up for rival owner John Stewart A billionaire racehorse owner has brutally put down a racing sheikh after he intervened in an ongoing public feud with another rival. Mike Repole is one of the most successful owners in US horse racing. The New Yorker, who sold his drinks manufacturing businesses to Coca Cola for nearly £8 billion, poured his fortune into establishing a racing stable which has produced star names such as Uncle Mo and Breeders' Cup winners Fierceness and Forte. ‌ In the last 12 months he has been engaged in increasingly spiky exchanges on social media with a relative newcomer to the sport, John Stewart. ‌ Former Toyota production line worker Stewart, who runs his own private equity business, has spent millions establishing his Resolute Racing racing and breeding operation since 2023. The vocal Repole has branded himself the 'commissioner' of horse racing in the US who is committed to unifying the factions in the sport but his banter with Stewart has become increasingly bitter. Last year, after Stewart described Repole as 'divisive', the New Yorker responded by calling his rival an 'arrogant, free spending new kid on the block' and a 'shallow rich guy'. Stewart, who last year added the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Goliath to his string, is sponsoring races this weekend at the Belmont Stakes fixture at Saratoga. He explained he had become involved for 'for the horseplayers and the fans. Without the horseplayers and the fans the sport doesn't exist in the US.' ‌ He added: 'There are enough 'look at me' people in the horse industry that are just in it for what they can get from it. 'I believe that in order to be a true participant in horse racing you have to support the broader industry. I am not a breed to sell operation and we don't stand stallions so some may argue that we shouldn't sponsor races. 'Resolute sponsors races for the same reason we participate in stallions shares and hold free promotional events for fans and industry participants. ‌ 'I want Resolute to promote the sport and to engage with others. Of course we like winning races and we do, but we like handing out trophies to others and celebrating others success.' Repole could not resist commenting on the post, and responded: 'I have to give credit where credit is due. In the 150 year history of Thoroughbred Racing, Little John is the ONLY owner to ever sponsor more races than he has won!!!!! This is an historic and epic feat that will never be duplicated!!!!! ‌ 'I am ashamed and embarrassed to admit that Repole Stable has won over 1000 career races, over 100 stake races, Classics, Breeders Cups, won the Travers 2x, Multiple Eclipse Awards etc, etc, and NEVER sponsored a race. 'I would like to 'sincerely' apologize to my family, friends, all of Gioia's stuffed animals and the Thoroughbred industry for any embarrassment I have caused you by consistently winning races. Will you forgive me?' Rallying to Stewart's side, Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, whose Qatar Racing is a partner in some of Stewart's horses and who through Qipco has been a major sponsor in Britain, remarked: 'At least someone gives back to the races. We all have to do our part not just take.' But Repole dug up a clip of Sheikh Fahad falling off his horse and crashing through the rail during the 2017 Newmarket Town Plate. The sheikh suffered minor cuts to his head and face. He said: 'Sheikh Fahad, I will take the high road on this disappointing post, because we both know this is untrue. I am just happy you and the horse were both OK after this incident.' He signed it :'Mike From Queens.'

Pride Of Jenni in Anniversary Vase quandary

Watching Pride Of Jenni as the first horse beaten in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2,000m) felt like worrying deja vu of her last place in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1,600m) last November. Back then, she bled from both nostrils, with flamboyant owner Tony Ottobre deciding with trainer Ciaron Maher soon after to retire the Australian Horse of the Year. It brought an inauspicious end to a stunning career better remembered for her almost supernatural win in the 2024 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2,000m) where she led the field by 30 lengths at one stage, but never faltered to the line - relegating a certain Via Sistina to second place more than six lengths astern. Against all odds, the seven-year-old daughter of Pride Of Dubai returned to racing after serving the mandatory three-month suspension for bleeding. While her "run of the century" was put down by many to a second set of lungs, it remained to be seen how the original set had cleared up and would withstand the rigours of racing at her comeback. The answer could not have been more resounding. With new partner Craig Newitt aboard, the old Jenni was back with a vengeance in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1,800m) at Caulfield on March 15. Granted, the ninth win was not as breathtaking as the Queen Elizabeth - and it is doubtful she will ever emulate that performance - but the catch-me-if-you-can style was still unmistakable. Two weeks later, she started as the 5-2 favourite in the Australian Cup at Flemington, but the warning signs popped up as early as the halfway mark. Usually at that point, she is sooled away to a commanding break while her hapless rivals are seen paddling away in her wake. Not this time. Even more foreboding was the sight of Newitt pulling the whip at the home turn. She was engulfed in no time, finishing in a canter 15 lengths off winning stablemate Light Infantry Man, beating one home. The knee-jerk reaction from such a dismal run in some quarters would be to pull the pin on her racing days for good this time. However, unlike her post-Champions Mile run, she did not exhibit any untoward signs and was soon given a clean bill of health. Pride Of Jenni was down but not out. Ottobre was not content with eight wins, three at Group 1 level and A$10.3 million (S$8.62 million) in stakes as the final statistics. A decision to skip a probably futile attempt to defend her Queen Elizabeth Stakes crown on April 12 in favour of a shot at the Brisbane Winter Carnival sounded wise. As expected, Via Sistina was too good. The A$175,000 Listed Anniversary Vase (1,600m) at Caulfield on May 3 (at 2.20pm Singapore time) as the launch pad to a second Lazarus-like winning comeback does raise a few eyebrows, though. She is down in easy grade against opposition which would have been rated as easy kill 12 months ago, but the top impost of 61kg while giving 5.5kg to the next horse Regal Zeus is a major deterrent. That same Regal Zeus being a noted front runner may set Pride Of Jenni for a cut-throat battle, which could only result in the same agonising outcome for fans and connections - a rearward finish. The one tick of approval is the Caulfield mile, which suits better than the 2,000m at Flemington. To Maher, the race is a crucial gauge to the Brisbane riches, even if it may still point to the paddocks. "Jenni is in really good order," Maher told RSN. "She's en route to Queensland and we will have a look at her on Saturday. "We have used races like that before, these quality handicaps with the maximum topweight. I think we did it with Gold Trip (2022 Melbourne Cup winner)." However, the odds are still stacked against her. Swoopers ready to pounce on her vulnerability are not in a short supply. Last-start Listed City of Adelaide winner Hellsing, Pounding and Makram are among those who can put another dent on the wounded Pride of Australian racing. manyan@

Owner John Stewart eyes QE II Cup glory with Goliath as the last overseas runners for Champions Day arrive

American owner John Stewart's pursuit of the world's biggest races will take him to Hong Kong for the first time on Sunday when Goliath tackles the Group One QE II Cup (2,000m). Stewart has become a big player in thoroughbred breeding and racing worldwide under the banner of Resolute Racing in recent years, including the acquisition of a majority share in Goliath last year. The Francis-Henri Graffard-trained gelding caught Stewart's attention after his upset win in a star-studded Group One King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2,392m) at Ascot last July. Goliath won the Group Two Prix du Conseil de Paris (2,200m) at his following start in October before running sixth in November's Group One Japan Cup (2,400m). With Hong Kong champion Romantic Warrior resting after an arduous Middle Eastern campaign and multiple Group One winner Dubai Honour absent, Goliath will be the QE II Cup's star attraction. 'He's already at Sha Tin and seems in great shape,' Stewart told the Jockey Club. 'At this stage in his career he's the ideal horse to travel the world and we've had this race in mind for him for a long time. 'As I'm building my stable, competing internationally is at the top of my agenda. The Hong Kong fans are so passionate and it's good for them to get the chance to see him. I tell my trainers I'm not interested in prize money – I just want to run in the best races. The beast has arrived in Hong Kong @HKJC_Racing and is ready to pound the competition! GOLIATH! — Jstewartrr (@jstewartrr) April 19, 2025 'It's a shame some of the bigger names won't be turning up, but it will still be a competitive race as you always have to take the Japanese horses seriously and the local horses deserve respect. 'Christophe (Soumillon) is a world-class rider and he and Francis will sit down and talk about how they want the race to go during the week. We think he could have been ridden more positively in the Japan Cup.' Goliath arrived in Hong Kong on Saturday morning, while the last of the international raiders for FWD Champions Day arrived on Sunday – Japan's Satono Reve and Tastiera and Bahrain's Goemon. Fresh from a last-start Group One triumph in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1,200m) at Chukyo, Satono Reve faces a rematch with Ka Ying Rising in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) after running third to Hong Kong's star sprinter in the Group One Hong Kong Sprint (1,200m) last December. Tastiera clashes with Goliath in the QE II Cup, while Goemon takes on the likes of Voyage Bubble and Mr Brightside in a strong edition of the Group One Champions Mile. Hayes praises apprentice David Hayes lauded Ellis Wong Chi-wang for his perfect ride when the apprentice booted home Solid Shalaa in Sunday's Class Four Cheung Shan Handicap (1,200m). Wong settled Solid Shalaa just behind midfield on the inside rail from gate six and came off the inside approaching the turn to make his run. While Zac Purton shot Fun N Fun Together clear at the 250m to establish a handy lead, Solid Shalaa sprouted wings to edge past that galloper late for a neck victory. 'You can't complain when they go on the inside on the dirt, peel out in the straight and win – really good ride,' Hayes said after Wong notched his seventh win of the term. 'I think he tries hard, he's got a seven-pound allowance and he's getting stronger as the months go on. So he'll keep riding winners.' Solid Shalaa went one better than his first-up run when a close second to California Star. The son of Shalaa didn't race for almost a year after injuring both fore suspensory ligaments last July and his left fore humeral bone last November. 'The Conghua boys did a really good job because he had one year off and now the leg, touch wood, is really good,' Hayes said. 'We'll keep him on the dirt and he'll keep winning.' Ferraris on fire Young jockey Luke Ferraris sailed past his career-best haul of wins for a season after lifting Bright Inheritance to victory in the Class Four Kowloon Tsai Handicap (1,600m). Ferraris hugged the inside rail on Bright Inheritance before coming off the fence to launch a powerful run in the straight, with the Dennis Yip Chor-hong-trained gelding beating Happy Universe by a length. Ferraris, 23, eclipsed his previous best of 35 wins in 2022-23 with 24 meetings left this term. 'It's ticking along OK,' he said. 'It's good to get on the board for Dennis. It's taken me a while to ride him a winner, but never late than never. He had the horse in great condition.'
