Woman accused of punching 73-year-old subway rider in NYC train station
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A woman is accused of attacking a 73-year-old subway rider in a Manhattan train station last month, police said. Bronx resident Marie McWilliams, 36, was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault in connection with the May 1 incident in the Fifth Avenue-53rd Street subway station in Midtown, according to the NYPD. McWilliams allegedly started yelling at the 73-year-old woman while they were on the Manhattan-bound E train before repeatedly punching the woman as she got off the train at around 4:30 p.m., authorities said. The victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The suspect got on a Queens-bound E train after the incident, police said. McWilliams' arraignment was pending Tuesday. The arrest was announced the same day that authorities said crime in the city's subway system has decreased, especially on trains and platforms. Transit crime is down about 5% this year. But when it comes to assaults, the primary cause is mental illness, police said. 'We have done a very good job targeting areas that we do see more prolific people who assault individuals in transit,' police said. NYC subways has deadly 24 hours as four people jump in front of trains: sources
Four people are believed to have jumped in front of New York City subway trains in less than 24 hours, transit sources told the Daily News Thursday, characterizing it as a particularly grim day on the system. Service was delayed on the No. 7 line Thursday afternoon after an unidentified person jumped in front of a Queens-bound train as it entered the 103rd St. Station in Corona shortly after 2:30 p.m. The incident happened barely an hour after another person was hit by an uptown No. 1 train as the subway entered the 191st St. Station in Washington Heights. A transit source told The News that that person survived the apparent suicide attempt, and was rushed to an area hospital. Another person was killed Wednesday night after sources say they jumped in front of a No. 2 train at the 96th St. Station on the Upper West Side around 7:30 p.m., less than an hour after another apparent Wednesday night suicide-by-train at the 207th St. Station on the No. 1 line. An NYPD spokesperson confirmed that no criminality was suspected in any of the four incidents.

Overweight trucks on BQE stretch down 60% with new weight sensors
The number of overweight trucks crossing the creakiest section of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway has been more than halved by the installation of overweight vehicle sensors, city transportation officials announced Tuesday. Beginning in November 2023, the city has used automated sensors on the Queens-bound side of the BQE triple-cantilever in downtown Brooklyn to assess fines to overweight trucks. An analysis of a years worth of data shows that overweight crossings of the triple-cantilever have fallen by 60% since the automated fines began — an average of 3,041 overweight trucks each month, down from 7,920 a month prior to the program beginning. 'I hope our productive partnership with legislative leaders and the Governor to bring weigh-in-motion to New York City, and the results it has yielded, can serve as a national model for other cities and states, including the rest of New York State,' city transportation commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement. Some 130,000 vehicles traverse the BQE each day, according to city data, a number that includes roughly 13,000 trucks. The route includes the aging triple cantilever structure that skirts Brooklyn Heights — a stacked set of roadways that has long been in need of serious repair. Weight sensors were first installed along the Queens-bound lane of the structure, and were authorized by lawmakers in Albany to interface with license-plate cameras and automatically issue fines to trucks carrying more than the allowable per-axle weight or gross vehicle weight. The DOT had initially planned to install the system on the Staten Island-bound side by the end of 2024, an upgrade officials say is coming this year. But the automated ticket system's authorization is set to expire on December 1. Transportation officials Tuesday called on Albany to re-authorize and expand the program, allowing for it to be used on other sections of road under NYC DOT's auspices. As previously reported, work to overhaul the triple cantilever is expected to begin in 2028.
