Identity unknown: man of many names charged over fraud, forgery and fake ID

Police are calling for help to determine the true identity of an alleged conman facing fraud charges. The 32-year-old goes by the name Paul Sorin Kimpian and investigators believe he has also used the aliases Roman Janecek and Jean Paul Fontaine in the past. He is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 24 after he was arrested by Queensland Police over a string of fraud and theft charges. But his true name and address remain unknown, police said. "Anyone with information that may assist ongoing investigations, including the man's identity and residence, or anyone connected to him, is encouraged to contact police," investigators said. The alleged conman is accused of committing fraud, attempted fraud, stealing and receiving tainted property by police. He was also charged with forgery, possessing false foreign travel documents and dealing with identification information. The 32-year-old was known to spend time in Brisbane and Gold Coast, and to travel on public transport. Police also believe he may have visited Cairns. Investigators described him as being of Romanian appearance, around 184 centimetres tall, with balding dark brown hair and a moustache. He has been remanded in custody as the investigation continues. "Police encourage anyone who notices fraudulent transactions on their accounts to immediately notify their financial institution, then report the matter to police and seek any personal support you may need," Queensland Police said. Illegal garden act caught on Aussie mum's home camera highlights strange new trend

In what appears to be a growing trend nationwide, yet another suburban Aussie homeowner has fallen victim to the strange surge in plant theft. This time, a Queensland mother has lost her prized lemon tree, with the outrageous late-night act caught on home security footage. Ineke McMahon had a vision when she planted her lemon tree out the front of her Brisbane home. Her neighbours would "come home with their kids from school" and "pick a lemon to have with their gin and tonics". But pretty quickly that dream was dashed. CCTV shows a mystery figure recently approaching Ineke's yard at about 4.30am in a seemingly targeted takedown. Ineke believes the offender had likely been circling the suburb "looking for something to steal" before they set their sights on the fruit tree. "It's unbelievable, we just couldn't believe it," the mother-of-two said of the robbery. "It's distressing and also highly amusing at the same time," she told A Current Affair. Other than grainy footage of a shadowy figure appearing on home surveillance cameras, little else is known about the offender. While Queensland Police are aware of the incident, all that remains of the tree is the trail of dirt left behind after it was plucked from the ground. As for Ineke, she "has no idea" who might've had their eyes on it before it was taken. "And why are you driving around at 4.30am on a Friday morning?" she wondered. Australia's lucrative plant theft trend It's the latest example of plant snatching to take place in the country, and local homeowners who are falling victim say they are fed up. In May, a South Australian gardener branded a late-night plant thief "despicable" and called for the alleged robber to "get a job", after his property was targeted twice in three weeks. Moment tradie takes alleged tool thief 'out like a wheelie bin' Brazen thief caught on CCTV robbing funeral minutes after procession Man's act with mum's $170 Woolworths delivery caught on CCTV Andy Luke, from the Adelaide suburb of Eden Hills, said both he and his neighbours had repeatedly been targeted by the thief. But because the CCTV footage did not capture the offender's face or vehicle registration, there's little police can do until they strike again. Andy believed the alleged robber was selling the plants elsewhere. "I think someone is either taking them and selling them, or they're dodgy landscapers and someone had an order for English hedges and they decided to come and take them," he said. Earlier in Adelaide, a resident resorted to placing Apple Airtags in the pots of their plants to track down plant thieves after months of theirs going missing in the night. Further east, A Sydney student recently told Yahoo she was left "devastated" after robbers pinched $300 worth of new plants from her front garden. In yet another incident, a 36-year-old man, also from New South Wales, found parts of his newly planted hedge had been stolen, prompting him to leave a very disparaging sign for the culprit. "I was absolutely gutted and instantly irate," he told Yahoo at the time. Love Australia's weird and wonderful environment? 🐊🦘😳 Get our new newsletter showcasing the week's best stories.

Police chase man onto roof to make arrest in Ipswich, southwest of Brisbane

Several police vehicles have been damaged trying to stop a driver who allegedly fled the scene of a hit-and-run crash, before he was dramatically arrested on a rooftop. Police said the ordeal was sparked when a Honda HR-V drove into the back of a Hyundai i40 on Pine Mountain Rd in the Ipswich suburb of Brassall, 40 minutes southwest of Brisbane, about 8.40am on Wednesday. Instead of stopping to exchange details, authorities said the driver of the 'stolen Honda fled the scene'. Polair tracked the car as it travelled through Ipswich, before police used a tyre deflation device to bring it to a stop. 'The driver and sole occupant, a 20-year-old Brassall man, fled the scene on foot and climbed onto the roof of a property, where he was subsequently arrested,' Queensland Police said. 'It will be alleged the vehicle attempted to evade police a number of times, resulting in several police vehicles being damaged due to impact.' No one was seriously injured and no charges have been laid, with the investigation ongoing.
