Tokyo Consumer Prices Signal Rise in Japan-Wide Inflation

TOKYO—Consumer inflation in the Tokyo metropolitan area picked up in May, signaling persistent price pressures nationwide. Excluding fresh food, consumer prices in Tokyo rose 3.6% in May from a year earlier as food prices continued to rise, official data showed Friday. That compared with April's 3.4% increase and the 3.5% growth expected in a poll of economists by data provider Quick.

JGBs Edge Lower, Weighed by Signs of Faster Inflation in Japan

0015 GMT — JGBs edge lower in price terms in early Tokyo trade, weighed by signs of faster inflation in Japan. Data released earlier showed consumer prices excluding volatile fresh food rose 3.5% in April from a year earlier, compared with March's 3.2% increase and 3.4% growth expected in a poll of economists by data provider Quick. 'Underlying inflation remained strong in April despite the slashing of public high school fees,' Capital Economics' Marcel Thieliant says in a commentary. 'We still expect the Bank of Japan to tighten policy further this year,' the head of Asia-Pacific adds. The five-year JGB yield is up 0.5 bp at 1.035%; the 10-year yield is up 0.5 bp at 1.565%. (

GNFL round four wrap: Brigades and Railways headline game of the round while Mullewa break losing streak

Round four of the GNFL included a major upset that saw Mullewa break a 750-day winless streak and a tight tussle between Brigades and Railways. Touted as game of the round, the battle at GBSC Sports Park was an arm wrestle between the Hawks and Blues on Saturday, before the Blues ran away with it in the last quarter. However, that match was arguably overshadowed by Mullewa's shock 10-point win over Towns at Wonthella Oval. The contest between Brigades and Railways marked a special occasion for two individuals with Brigades captain Mick Quick chalking up his 100th league game and umpire Steve Pratt officiating his 300th. Quick ticked off the 100-game milestone after debuting in 2011. It has been a long journey for Quick with a stint in the Army and a knee reconstruction along the way, as well as issues with concussion. Pratt's milestone was reached when he umpired the match between Brigades and Railways. Widely known in the football community for his communication skills with players and consistency week in week out, Pratt is a well-respected character in the GNFL. It was the battle out of the midfield that got the fans excited with last year's JJ Clune medallist Hayden Johnson rucking against Railways' Flynn Dillon. The pair went to war all day with neither looking to give an inch. Railways' captain Jesse Adamini led front the front yet again with an impressive four-goal bag while vice-captain Elliot Delaney booted two. Among the best on ground for Brigades were Izac Ronan, Joel Pattrick, Dylan Ralph, Quick and Klay Sipila while for Railways it was Matthew Kimberley, Dillon, Adamini, Drew Tunbridge and Darcy Rowe. The first half was a deadlock, with neither team able to draw away to much of a margin in between the breaks. Brigades drew first blood in the first term through Daniel Leach before Railways bounced back in the second quarter kicking three goals. After the third there were only four points in it in a low-scoring affair, with the scoreboard reading, Brigades 3.9 (27) to Railways 3.5 (23). However, an onslaught in the final term from Railways saw the Blues run away with it with a seven-goal term, kicking to the northern end of the ground and winning by 35 points. The final scores were Railways 10.9 (69) to Brigades' 4.10 (34). Also on Saturday, a massive upset unfolded at WA Country Builders Stadium with Towns going down at home to Mullewa. Prior to the weekend, the Saints had not had a win since round one in 2023, a 42-point victory over Towns. It means the Saints went 750 days between wins, in a victory the club will hope is the first of many going forward. In a much-needed boost for the Saints, Mullewa got the four points, 9.12 (66) to Towns 8.8 (56). In the other league game of round four, Rovers hosted Chapman Valley at Greenough Oval, with the Royals running over the top of the Demons in a 94-point win, bouncing back after their loss at home to Railways. The final scores were Rovers 2.5 (17) to Chapman Valley 16.15 (111). AROUND THE GROUNDS WOMEN Chapman Valley def. Rovers: 19.13 (127) to 0.1 (1) Brigades def. Zomato ends rain fee waiver for Gold members as losses balloon

Zomato has quietly announced that it will now charge a ' rain fee ' from its Gold subscription members. The restaurant aggregator has revamped its subscription plan to levy a surcharge even from its premium members for deliveries made during rainy conditions. Most foodtech and quick commerce platforms put an additional rain fee on their deliveries. Zomato too used to charge Rs 10-35 as a rain fee but waived this amount for its Gold members . This benefit will now be rescinded from May 16. The food delivery platform also charges Rs 10 as a platform fee for every order. In an app notification, Zomato said the charges will help it compensate its delivery partners better during rain. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Zomato Q4 performance Eternal , the parent company of Zomato, reported a steep 78% year-on-year (YoY) fall in net profit during the March quarter at Rs 39 crore as losses from quick commerce arm Blinkit continued to weigh on the bottomline. The Gurugram-based company's operating revenue surged 64% on-year to Rs 5,833 crore, primarily led by growth in Blinkit, which has come neck-to-neck in terms of gross order value (GOV) to food delivery. Blinkit's growth came at the cost of its operating losses increasing 75% sequentially to Rs 178 crore. Live Events Food delivery , the company's mature business, continued to grow slowly. CEO Deepinder Goyal attributed the sluggish pace to weak discretionary spends and the rising influence of quick commerce on both operations and demand. Food delivery order volumes were impacted after Zomato delisted around 19,000 restaurants during the March quarter, Goyal said. These restaurants were taken off Zomato for not passing hygiene standards, mimicking established brands, or operating multiple identical menu listings to hog more listing impressions. In an indication of rising dependence on food delivery for consolidated profits, the company also shuttered its 15-minute food delivery service, Quick, and its homely meals offering, Everyday. CEO Deepinder Goyal, in a letter to the shareholders, said the company saw no visible 'path to profitability' for these services 'without compromising customer experience'.

Prosecutors want teens accused in Clovis killing of Caleb Quick tried as adults

Prosecutors will file court petitions requesting that the two 16-year-olds arrested for the deadly shooting of Clovis teen Caleb Quick be tried as adults, the Fresno County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday. The 16-year-olds — a boy and a girl — face murder charges after being accused of the April 23 killing of Caleb Quick, an 18-year-old high school student, the office said. The boy allegedly shot Quick in the head outside of a Clovis McDonald's as he walked through a parking lot, and the girl acted as the getaway driver, according to police. Under California law, a teenager must be at least 16 to be tried as an adult and prosecutors must ask a judge to allow the teen to face an adult trial. The DA's office said Tuesday they will make that request but had no details about when a judge would make a ruling. The trial in a juvenile court carries significantly different potential punishments than an adult criminal trial, according to prosecutors. As adults, the girl would face 26 years to life for participating in the slaying while the boy would potentially be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the enhanced crime of lying in wait, prosecutors said. As juveniles, they each face up to seven years of confinement or up until they turn 25, prosecutors said. Both teens were scheduled for a hearing at the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Center on Wednesday. Officers arrived outside a McDonald's at Willow and Nees avenues shortly before 9 p.m. April 23, and found Quick with at least one gunshot wound to the side of his head. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died. That fast-food location was known to be a popular gathering place for teens, and Quick was there with friends, police said. Once a Buchanan High student, Quick more recently attended Clovis Online School, which is not connected to any specific Clovis school campus. Clovis police began a manhunt that lasted about two weeks. Investigators have not given any specific motives behind the killing, but said the teens knew each other. The accused shooter arrived at the McDonald's, watched Quick and followed the 18-year-old outside before gunning him down, police said. Police seized a Tesla on May 9 they believed was connected to the shooting, and a few days later arrested two suspects who turned themselves in.
