Gauteng businessman jailed for R66 million Transnet fraud after 6 years on the run
A Gauteng businessman has been jailed for an effective five years in connection with R66million Transnet fraud. A Gauteng businessman has been jailed for an effective five years in connection with R66million Transnet fraud. Yakub Ahmed Suleman Bhikhu and his company, Homix (Pty) Ltd, were convicted on 81 counts that include fraud, forgery, uttering, money laundering, and the Contravention of the Tax Administration Act in the Pretoria Regional Court. According to the IDAC, Bhikhu pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years' direct imprisonment, of which five years were suspended for a period of five years. He was further ordered to reimburse an amount of R300,000 to Transnet, which he received as gratification. His company was sentenced to a fine of R500,000, which was suspended on the condition that it does not commit a similar offence. Explaining the charges, the IDAC spokesperson, Henry Mamothame said: "This conviction is as a result of the commissioning of the 81 offences by Bhiku and his company during the period 2012 and 2015, valued at approximately R66 million, which was a loss to Transnet. "The Accused opened accounts at various banks and forex entities, on behalf of Homix, where at the time he was the sole director. "Payments stemming from Transnet were then paid into these accounts and dispersed to various other persons and entities by making use of fraudulent paperwork to execute fraudulent imports and exports. "In the process, the SARS, SAR,B and various private entities and banks were defrauded to allow the export of currency, which was proved to be illegal." The Accused was informed of the matter against him in about 2017. "He then evaded arrest for 6 years until he was apprehended on the border whilst trying to enter Botswana." The IDAC said he has been in custody since 2017. The NPA's IDAC welcomes the conviction and the direct imprisonment, coming from evidence that was presented in the State Capture Commission and further investigated by IDAC and its stakeholders in the law enforcement fraternity. ‘She said she was a cop' – Pinetown pensioners scammed out of half a million rand
'She said she was a cop' – Pinetown pensioners scammed out of half a million rand AN elderly Pinetown couple is shattered after being scammed of their hard-earned savings of R500 000 by a woman posing as a police officer. Recalling the ordeal, Donald Bristol told the Highway Mail that he received a phone call from a woman who introduced herself as Detective Mudalay, claiming to represent the SAPS. The woman informed him that there was an ongoing issue involving the cloning of his bank cards and that she was investigating the matter. 'She stated that she needed to visit me personally to discuss the case. I notified the security at the gate of my residential complex to allow her access. The woman arrived at my flat, presented herself professionally, and explained the alleged card cloning issue in detail. Also read: BEWARE: Scammers target job seekers She mentioned that the case was being handled in co-ordination with the Pinetown SAPS. Her demeanor and presentation led me to trust her,' said the the 87-year-old Bristol. During the woman's visit, Bristol said the scammer requested his bank debit and cheque cards, including the PINs, and also took his cellphone, saying it was needed for the investigation. 'I complied with her request but I never gave her my pin number. I have never used any form of online banking prior to this incident.' Over the following days, the woman contacted Bristol on his wife's phone with a private number, instructing him not to speak to anyone about the case, as it could compromise the investigation. 'On Thursday, May 8, I received another call, allegedly from the bank, stating that the cards would only be ready by Monday, May 12, but I now believed this was also the impersonator. On Friday, May 9, she called again and instructed me to meet her at the bank in Josiah Gumede Road, Pinetown, to receive my new bank cards and have my cellphone returned.' On Monday, May 12, the couple went to the branch. While inside the bank, Bristol said he received another call from the same woman, again insisting he say nothing to anyone and asked me to meet her outside the bank. Also read: Don't fall for romance scams in this month of love 'We went outside but could not find her. We returned inside and spoke with a bank employee. After checking my account, we discovered I had been a victim of fraud and that multiple unauthorised transactions had occurred. 'The bank staff printed out the list of fraudulent transactions for us.' The statements show a number of transactions at various grocery shops, liquor outlets and clothing stores, which includes sophisticated shops which sell designer brands. When they realised it was a scam, they proceeded to Pinetown SAPS and opened a criminal case. The couple has a CCTV footage of the impersonator entering the residential complex. The devastated Pinetown residents said it has been over two months and they have not received any assistance. 'We do not know how this woman got hold of my contact details and my address. We do not even have family in the country, my family is overseas.' Pinetown SAPS communications officer Jennifer Naidu said a case of fraud is being investigated. 'The investigating officer has obtained video footage and held a meeting with the complainant to gather further information. Police are following leads,' said Naidu. Planned power outage to affect these Johannesburg areas
City Power Johannesburg has implemented an 8-hour power outage in the city as part of its regular maintenance. City Power mentioned, 'The interruption is necessary to do maintenance work on our network, which is part of our programme of constantly striving to provide a better service.' Customers are urged to always treat their supply points as live. The power outage will occur at Khanyisa Substation on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, from 9:00 until 17:00 in these areas: Bryanston Bryanston 40 Bryanston ext. 75 Cowdray Park ext. 1 Lyme Park Bryanston ext. 8 Bryanston ext. 64 Bryanston ext. 95 Hurlingham ext.5 City Power has removed illegal connections in Crown informal settlement on Wednesday, 16 July 2025. The multi-disciplinary operation confiscated more than 10 000 kilograms of illegally connected aluminium cable, valued at approximately R500 000. The illegal connections in the area have been removed multiple times in the past. 'This is not the first time illegal connections have been removed in the Crown informal settlement. Previous disconnection efforts over the past year in the same areas have been undermined by repeated illegal reconnections, indicating a persistent and organised effort by criminal syndicates,' said City Power. Six businesses, including a building housing a higher education institution, owes R4.9 million. The power utility encouraged customers who earn less than R7 503 to register for its Free Basic Electricity (FBE) which provides free electricity to help meet essential needs. 'Customers on the resident prepaid low tariff will remain exempt from the R70 service charge and R130 network capacity charge,' added the power utility.
