Gracie Abrams puts on magical, love-filled sell-out debut Perth concert at RAC Arena
'I'll never forget my first show with you, I love you.' So much love was in the air inside RAC Arena on Friday night where American singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams performed her first headline show in Perth. Our city was also the last stop on her The Secret Of Us tour and the 25-year-old didn't hold back with pouring her heart out. Opening her show with Felt Good About You, the star appeared on stage hidden from the light until she revealed herself and her cute outfit, a beautiful red dress with black bows on the shoulders. Abrams fans — mostly teenage girls in white maxi skirts and pastel colour bows in their hair — showed endless love and support for their idol throughout the entire night — from singing every lyric from some of her older songs to more recent tracks like Us featuring Taylor Swift, Risk and I Love You, I'm Sorry. The intense interactions Abrams had with her fans showed how much they meant to her and she took every opportunity to accept gifts from the crowd. Some of these presents included the Australian flag, koala teddies and a huge handmade scrapbook. Addressing her thousands-strong crowd, Abrams said it was 'so nice to meet you.' 'This is my first show I've ever done in your city. I can't tell you how much it means thanks so much for being here, camping and waiting outside,' she said. 'It's an honour to know you and to be here.' It was incredible to see an artist have that type of relationship with her fans and actually take time out of her show to spend it more intimately with them. The last part of the concert involved Abrams running through the centre of mosh pit to a second stage that was in fact a bed. Abrams said the bedroom was a replica of her own and was where she spent the early days of her career writing songs and sharing snippets of them on social media. She sang several songs, including fan request Camden, while playing the keyboard. She also took a moment to sing happy birthday to fellow musician and friend, Tucker from Role Model, with the entire arena joining in. Abrams closed her show with two of more well known tunes That's So True and Close To You which had most fans up and dancing and belting out the love songs. Abrams' stunning debut show in Perth was a clear crowd pleaser. From her powerful vocals, to fun visualisers on the LED screens to her musical talent playing guitar and piano, it's no doubt her fan base is only going to grow exponentially. Abrams is definitely one to keep an eye on as it seems she is following in Taylor Swift's footsteps. The verdict: 4 stars Gracie Abrams is set to perform another sold-out show at RAC Arena on Saturday night.

‘Thank you so much Australia!': Gracie Abrams takes to the stage in Perth as she bids to become the next Taylor Swift
Gracie Abrams kicked off the first of two sell out shows in Perth on Friday night as she embarked on the final leg of her Australian tour. Taylor Swift's bestie had already performed packed shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide, and unlike so many big pop stars of recent times, Abrams refused to give her fans in Perth the cold shoulder. It's been a meteoric rise to the top for Abrams, who is the daughter of Hollywood director JJ Abrams. While she began on few people's radar as an up and coming singer-songwriter, a starring position as support on pal Taylor Swift's Eras Tour was the nudge she needed to send her soaring into the mainstream much like fellow Eras Tour act Sabrina Carpenter. Despite it being her first arena tour following her breakout success, Abrams clearly wanted to keep things intimate despite the grand setting of the RAC Arena as she pranced through the crowd from the main stage to the B-stage which had been dressed up to look like her childhood bedroom. As she belted out some of her lesser known tracks you'd be mistaken for thinking they were all world conquering smash hits listening to fans singing back every word to her. She had the crowd, filled mostly with teenage girls enamoured by the singer's girl next door smile and talent for writing a hook, in the palm of her hand and one thing quickly became clear; Abrams is here to stay. 'Thank you for making me feel so welcome' she gushed of the Australian crowds before later proudly waving an Aussie flag thrown to her from the crowd. The entire experience was elevated further thanks to watching the show from one of RAC Arena's 30 fully customisable private suites, allowing the feeling of being embedded in the crowd without having to scramble through whenever a bathroom break is needed - simply a must for any millennial concertgoer. Despite all her talents, it's hard to shake off the feeling that we still don't quite know who Abrams is as an artist or what her sound is outside of her many influences. From her distinct vocal delivery (Halsey, Olivia Rodrigo), to her songwriting style (Taylor Swift, Lorde) to her persona (Michelle Branch, Natalie Imbruglia), Abrams is yet to carve out a distinguishable identity of her own. At present, she's still - while clearly very talented - an amalgamation of the pop stars she no doubt listened to in her childhood bedroom while dreaming of one day becoming just like them. That doesn't mean it won't happen for Abrams. Olivia Rodrigo faced similar critiques when she first emerged. But just a handful of years later and the former High School Musical star quickly found her niche and became responsible for bringing back female fronted pop rock to the charts where it had long been considered an essentially dead genre since dying out in the late 2000s. Abrams' interactions with her adoring fans while sat on a model of her childhood bed was very sweet, and she seemed genuinely grateful to have formed such a close connection with a demographic that has become synonymous with seeking out parasocial relationships with their idols. She ended her two hour-ish set with her two biggest hits, Close To You and then the global smash That's So True, which surprised even Abrams' diehard fans when it soared to the top of the charts at the tail-end of 2024. With such a big hit to her name just as she begins work on a follow-up album, she seems poised to cement herself within the pantheon of pop with her next release - but for now, for this writer at least, the question remains: Who is Gracie Abrams? However, one thing's for sure, I look forward to finding out.

Smiley has teased Drake is working on new music. The 27-year-old rapper - who is signed to the 'Hotline Bling' hitmaker's record label, OVO Sound - claimed in a video on his Instagram Stories that Drake, 38, has been working on new material during events, as well as on the set of Drake's 'Nokia' music video. Smiley, whose real name is Alexander Morand, said in the clip - which was shared by Drake: "Brother, I'm telling you, I seen him the other day. 'We're at a party and he was in the other room by himself eating pasta with wired headphones writing music while we have a whole party going on. He's on a different mode right now. 'Even at the 'Nokia' video shoot, during breaks, he had a bunch of producers and he was just recording. "So he's in that crazy mode, right now. (sic)' Smiley - who collaborated with Drake on 'Over The Top' in 2021 - made the comments just weeks after Drake confirmed he is working on a new album, which he spilled is "a slap" on Adin Ross' livestream on Kick. Drake said: "Thank you to everybody that's streaming the album. Every time, every journey. Working on a new album, it's a slap." Asked if it's a solo record, he replied: "Yeah." Drake released a joint album with fellow rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR, '$ome $exy $ongs 4 U', in February, which topped the charts. And the five-time Grammys winner's confirmation of a new LP came just months after he told the crowd during his 'Anita Max Win' tour at RAC Arena in Peth, Australia, in February that he is working on an untitled LP, which he described as a "one-on-one talk" with his fans. Drake teased the new project - which will be his first solo LP since 2023's 'For All the Dogs': "I got a new album coming out on Valentine's Day with PARTYNEXTDOOR. It's called '$ome $exy $ongs 4 U.' 'And you know, eventually when the time is right, Drizzy Drake alone by himself is gonna have to have a one-on-one talk to y'all. "When the time is right, I'll be back with another album, a one-on-one conversation with y'all that you need to hear."
