Twins Place All-Star CF Byron Buxton On 10-Day Injured List With Rib Injury
The Minnesota Twins placed All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a rib injury. The move, retroactive to Sunday, comes after Buxton was removed from the Twins' game against the Washington Nationals in the seventh inning on Saturday with soreness in his side. An MRI on Sunday revealed irritation in the cartilage in his rib cage. Buxton is in the midst of a career season. In 85 games, Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 home runs and 59 RBIs. He's also 17 for 17 in stolen bases. The 31-year-old has been mostly healthy this season, which has not always been the case. Since playing in 140 games in 2017, he hadn't played in more than 102 games in any season. Buxton spent 15 days on the IL in late May with a concussion and rebounded to earn his second All-Star Game nod. Reporting by The Associated Press. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Cubs Honor Ryne Sandberg With Ceremonial Patch on Uniform
The Chicago Cubs have unveiled a ceremonial patch on their uniform in memory of Ryne Sandberg one day after the Hall of Famer's death. Sandberg, who made 10 All-Star teams with the Cubs before his retirement in 1997, died Monday at the age of 65. The blue patch has a red 23 – Sandberg's uniform number – and features his signature in white lettering. It sits over the Cubs logo on an arm sleeve. The Cubs posted a video on social media of the patch being sewn onto the uniforms before Tuesday night's game at Milwaukee. During pregame warmups, the Cubs wore T-shirts with the message, "FO23VER." "It's sad because it kind of hits home I think a little more, but in the other way, you want to honor Ryno the best we can and shine a spotlight on a great life lived, for all the great things he represented as a man and as a Chicago Cub," Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. As Sandberg fought cancer last year, the Cubs unveiled a statue outside Wrigley Field that showed the second baseman in his familiar defensive crouch. As he talked about Sandberg before Tuesday's game, Counsell looked back on that ceremony from June 2024. "I was thinking about the day the statue was unveiled," Counsell said. "That's my favorite day as a Chicago Cub, just the team being there and fans in a different setting than in the ballpark, and watching Ryno and his family and knowing what he was going through and everything." Sandberg hit .285 with 282 homers, 1,061 RBIs and 344 steals in 15 years with the Cubs and was named NL MVP in 1984. The second baseman played 13 games for Philadelphia in 1981 but got traded to Chicago the following January. The Cubs also designated Chris Flexen for assignment before their matchup with the Brewers. Fellow right-hander Gavin Hollowell was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. The 31-year-old Flexen got off to a strong start this year, but he had surrendered 15 runs and 22 hits in 14 2/3 innings over his last five appearances at the time of the move. "It wasn't a fun conversation," Counsell said. "It never is. Chris has been a contributor on this team. He's contributed in some big ways to this team. Sometimes it doesn't feel fair." Former LSU baseball slugger Tommy White earns promotions in A's minor leagues
Former LSU slugger Tommy White earned a promotion in the minor leagues on Tuesday, per MiLB Central. White will make the jump from the High-A Lansing Lugnuts to the Double-A Midland RockHounds within the Athletics' farm system. The move comes after an appearance for the American League in the 2025 Futures Game in July and a stint on the seven-day injured list in March. White remains one of the top prospects in the Athletics' organization. In 2025, his second minor league season, White had a .260 batting average, 66 hits, 38 runs, and 36 RBIs through 66 games in High-A. He started 2024 in single-A after a No. 40 overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft. White is the No. 6 prospect in the Athletics' farm system. Here is what scouting report says about him. "White's right-handed power is legitimate and he can hit the ball a long way to all fields thanks to his strength and bat speed. He might be known for his home run totals but he's a better overall hitter than people think, finding the barrel consistently and limiting strikeouts. His knack for contact can lead to him expanding his strike zone, but he doesn't swing and miss very often."

Juan Soto leaves game after fouling ball off his left foot
SAN DIEGO (AP) — New York Mets slugger Juan Soto was removed from Tuesday night's game at San Diego a half inning after fouling a ball off his left foot in the fourth inning. Soto appeared to be in considerable pain. He hopped down the first base line on his right foot and then crouched down. He was checked by a trainer, took a few swings and then finished his at-bat, grounding out to second baseman Jake Cronenworth, who made a nice diving stop. The Mets announced that Soto had a bruised foot. Jeff McNeil moved from center field to right field while Tyrone Taylor entered the game batting third and playing center. Soto came in batting .249 with 25 homers and 62 RBIs. Soto joined the Mets in December when he signed the biggest contract in baseball history, a $765 million, 15-year deal.
