‘Urgent need for improvements' discussed at NCDMV press conference with Gov. Josh Stein

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Website upgrades, better pay, new positions and more efficient processes were some of the promises made by Gov. Stein and NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine Friday morning as they addressed the widespread issues being felt by customers. They joined Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins at the agency's East Raleigh office to highlight the 'urgent need for improvements' amid statewide challenges and what the future looks like. The press conference began with Sec. Hopkins inviting a DMV customer named Jocelyn to share her personal experience getting her daughter her driver's license. After driving over an hour to make it to the DMV office, she said she pleaded with staff after standing in line outside so long that her feet swelled. She was not only advocating to get them a seat, but to also come in and out of the rain to be helped before they closed. They were the last people served that day, Jocelyn said. As the NCDMV's new leader, Commissioner Tine said there is 'no shortage of opportunities to improve in the department.' As part of a 'Team DMV' plan, Tine said he visited many offices from the mountains to the coast to see where improvements are most needed to make the offices function better for North Carolinians. In that time, he said he observed issued from systems and processes to the physical facilities. At the core, however, he said a great need is making sure staff have what they need from compensation to resources. 'I want us to become a premiere customer service organization and to do that we need to empower our frontline staff,' he added. With a long way to go and many changes yet to be made, Tine said this is just the tip of the iceberg. The future, he said will focus on these four pillars: service, efficiency, agility and accountability. Gov. Stein said stories like Jocelyn's should be unique, but are not. Her story resembles thousands of others, he said. In addition to prioritizing raising pay for the state's DMV examiners, Gov. Stein said efforts are underway to simplify the agency's website and to ramp up efficiency as soon as this summer by creating 85 new positions. See which NCDMV offices are starting Saturday summer hours this weekend 'The DMV is not political. It's about service — service to the people of North Carolina,' the governor said. CBS 17 asked what tangible changes customers can see in these next few days and weeks. Commissioner Tine said the first round of changes can already be seen on the DMV website and encourages people to take a look. Off the top, he pointed to their homepage which directs people to a few questions which can help people determine if that need a Real ID right now. It also displays the message that REAL ID is 'completely optional.' As they work to address a lot of issues head-on, all at once, the commissioner said if people do not have an urgent need for something today, to not come to an office right now. Also coming soon to DMV offices will be changes that target the way appointments are processed and the efficiency of training individuals conducting road tests. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. North Syracuse neighbors not happy with new trash rollout

VILLAGE OF NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Some viewers have reached out to the Your Stories Team, wondering why the Village of North Syracuse didn't give its residents more notice about changes to its trash pickup. Neighbors who contacted us and those posting online said they were surprised when their trash and recycling bins were picked up this week and driven away by Syracuse Trash Haulers. Several people claimed they had no clue what was happening until an 'Urgent Notice' from the village was put on their door telling them of the trash change. 'Talk about poor planning,' one resident wrote on the Village of North Syracuse Facebook page. According to North Syracuse Mayor Gary Butterfield, the village's contract with Syracuse Haulers expires at the end of the month. Starting June 1, Butler Disposal will become the village's new trash and recycling hauler. He said the village is required to accept the lowest bid, which was Butler. Butterfield said the village worked with Onondaga County to help with the bidding process. He said they had a short window to alert the people of North Syracuse of the contract change. He added they posted the information on their website and Facebook page, but admits the communication wasn't perfect. He said they could have done better with the transition and getting the word out. The village said Butler will drop off new trash and recycling carts starting June 5. 'So, where is the trash supposed to be stored in the meantime?' Another resident posted on Facebook. The mayor said that while the carts will not be delivered until June 5, Butler will start picking up trash on the week of June 2nd. 'June 2nd, June 3rd, and June 4th, will have manual trash pickup that will pick up your bags at the road….trash on one side, recyclables on the other side. If you can save your recyclables/trash until the following week – perfect – you will have a tote available for the following week. Again, we apologize for any of these difficulties,' The Village of North Syracuse wrote on its Facebook page. Submit a form. Main St. This year, the division is expanding from 16 to 20 the number of offices offering services from 8 a.m.-noon on 11 Saturdays from May 31-Aug. 23 (offices will be closed on June 28 and July 5). Kernersville is among the four new offices with Saturday hours, along with Elizabeth City, Clayton and Durham East. Services that will be offered during the Saturday hours include driver license or ID cards, renewals or duplicate orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances, and road tests for customers that have already completed the knowledge and written tests. Anyone considering a visit to the DMV should first check to determine if they can complete their business online. NCDMV offers many online services, including driver license and ID card renewals, ordering duplicate licenses and ID cards, address changes and voter registration applications. With TSA now checking for REAL IDs, DMV Commissioner Paul Tine is encouraging North Carolinians to be informed about requirements for air travel: Unless you have upcoming air travel or will be visiting a federal building, there is no need to rush to the DMV. DMV continues to issue REAL IDs. Passports, military IDs, and global entry cards are all acceptable substitutes for a REAL ID. To learn more about REAL ID requirements and guidance, visit
