MCA Youth calls for suspension of Selangor parking concessionaire plans
MCA Youth is urging the suspension of plans for the state government's controversial decision to appoint a new parking concessionaire, pending greater transparency on the details. "Announce all the terms and conditions first," said Petaling Jaya MCA Youth Chief Andy Teoh. Teoh, along with several MCA Youth leaders, addressed the parking concessionaire issue outside the Menara Petaling Jaya City Council today (July 19), highlighting its impact on four local councils in Selangor: Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS). Teoh pointed out that the initial announcement for the new privatisation by the state was set for August 1, as declared by State Local Government and Tourism Committee Chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim on July 9. However, last week (July 15), Ng stated that the matter was not finalised. Teoh believes this is an opportunity for the state to disclose more information about the concessionaire. He expressed concern that the terms might not necessarily result in cost savings for the state. The state announced that the concessionaire would invest RM200mil in infrastructure for Selangor's Intelligent Parking (SIP), including approximately 1,800 CCTV cameras across the four local councils' jurisdictions. Teoh calculated that each CCTV camera would cost between RM110,000 and RM120,000, suggesting they should be technologically advanced. He found this cost unreasonable and instead advocated for improving services offered by local councils, questioning the necessity of privatising the service. Teoh also echoed Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung's call to review the privatisation process, noting that the local council would lose out on parking collection revenue, especially given the recent increase in Petaling Jaya City Council's assessment rates. He highlighted that previous privatisation concessionaires faced intense scrutiny from elected representatives, and this situation should be no different. "Listen to the rakyat, and we can safeguard the benefit of the local residents," he concluded.

Churches play vital role in fostering strong, caring society, says S'wak minister

MIRI (July 12): Religious institutions such as churches play a vital role in shaping society, not only by providing spiritual guidance but also by strengthening families, promoting moral values, and fostering unity, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Speaking at the Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) Morsjaya Charity Sale here today, Lee underscored the church's importance in cultivating a resilient and values-driven community – an effort that aligns closely with the state government's vision of holistic human development. 'The church does more than offer spiritual support. It contributes to family building, community cohesion, and the cultivation of ethics and values. 'These are the pillars of a strong and caring society,' said Lee, who is also Senadin assemblyman. The charity event was held to raise funds for a van recently acquired by the church to support its ministry and outreach activities. Commending the initiative, Lee described it as a noble effort that reflects the spirit of cooperation and empathy among the local community. He said the Sarawak government's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) supports such community-driven efforts, as the state aspires to build not just an economically resilient society, but one that is also socially and morally grounded. Lee also highlighted the vital role of the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) in supporting non-Islamic religious institutions across the state. He noted that RM110 million has been allocated under Unifor this year to assist with infrastructure upgrades and other support services for non-Muslim communities. 'Sarawak is the only state in Malaysia to consistently allocate significant annual funding to support religious diversity. This reflects our commitment to inclusion and mutual respect,' he said. On a related note, Lee pledged continued support for community initiatives and said his office had received several requests from the church, which he would carefully consider to determine how best to assist. He also voiced his support for the church's aspiration to establish a permanent facility that could double as a community activity centre, benefitting the wider public. 'This is not just about building infrastructure – it's about building stronger community ties,' he added. Lee also called on all Mirians to play their part in nurturing a caring and united society based on love, support, and mutual respect. During the event, he announced an allocation of RM5,000 for the church's activities, as well as RM10,000 to assist with financing the newly purchased van. The programme also saw the presentation of food baskets to senior members of the BEM congregation. Also present were BEM Miri chairman Pastor Loter Sakai; BEM Morsjaya pastors-in-charge Alan Lutu and Pastor Petrus Matias; and charity sales organising chairman Deacon Penghulu Randi Elon. Two in Sibu lose over RM300,000 to separate online scams
An elderly victim lost RM200,000 while a businesswoman in her 40s lost over RM110,000. — Bernama photo SIBU (July 9): A senior citizen here reported the loss of RM200,000 after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme. Sibu police chief ACP Zulkilpi Suhaili said the victim, in his 70s, had come across an advertisement on Facebook regarding the scheme. 'The victim was later contacted by two persons who introduced themselves as Timothy and Amy, who then added him to a WhatsApp group called 'Wealth Freedom KLSE'. 'They promised the victim high returns and convinced him to make two payments of RM100,000 each into a local bank account on June 25 and July 2,' he said in a statement today. Zulkipli said after transferring the money, the victim was shown fake investment profit statements to convince him of the scheme's legitimacy. However, the victim began sensing something was amiss when he was asked to pay an additional RM992,525 to supposedly redeem a 'lucky draw prize' involving shares of a company. 'He then lodged a police report and to date has not received any returns from his so-called investment,' said Zulkipli. In a separate case, Zulkipli said a businesswoman in her 40s lost over RM110,000 to a phishing scam after clicking on a link in an advertisement on Facebook regarding the sale of fruits. He said the victim's mobile phone suddenly shut down after she clicked on the link. 'Upon restarting the device, she found multiple unauthorised fund transfers had been made through her bank account and credit cards. 'A total of nine transactions were made to eight local bank accounts without her consent,' he said. Zulkipli said both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and urged the public not to click on dubious investment-related advertisements or links on social media, especially ones that promise high returns. 'Always verify the legitimacy of the companies through official channels such as Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission,' he said. online investment scam Sibu
