Popular Ipoh food vendor defends RM35 Khao Mok chicken rice pricing following online criticism
A Malaysian man recently criticised a popular food vendor based in Ipoh, Perak, for allegedly charging exorbitant prices for a Thai-style chicken and rice dish. The vendor, Dania Sedek, previously went viral in 2023 for selling an omelette dish priced at RM13. Sharing his frustration on Threads, the man urged local businesses to stop 'normalising' inflated prices for what is essentially a simple dish. In a screenshot attached to the post, the Khao Mok-style chicken with rice, served with sauce and toppings, was priced at RM35 — labelled as the 'tour price'. 'Yes, you can say I'm not the target market. If one cannot afford it, then don't buy it,' he wrote. He also warned that other vendors may follow suit and increase their prices, encouraged by the support and hype such businesses receive. On TikTok, Dania received pushback over the pricing, with the comments echoing similar sentiments as the man. Dania has since responded to these comments in another TikTok post, justifying the expensive pricing by stating the use of good quality ingredients, hygienic food preparation and fair wages for her staff. She further explained that her establishment does not 'mark up' costs at a whim and only prices her food following the actual value she and her team have 'worked on'. 'We understand that not everyone will agree but we are confident that once customers taste the food themselves, looking at several aspects, InsyaAllah, they will understand why,' she concluded the TikTok video.

MyKiosk: All Tabuan Jaya Old Market stalls taken up, Friendship Park tenants awaiting final selection
Wee speaks to reporters after the site visit. He is flanked by Zaiedi and Kho. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (July 18): All 28 MyKiosk stalls at the Tabuan Jaya Old Market parking lot have now been fully taken up, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng. He pointed out the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) received a total of 53 applications for the kiosks. 'Among the 28 kiosks, there are nine fruit and vegetable stalls, 14 stalls that sell packed food and drinks, and five drink and fruit juice stalls,' Wee said during a site visit today. The project funded by the federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government allows formerly illegal hawkers and B40 traders from the surrounding area to run businesses in a legal, safe, and clean space. 'So, we must say this is a good initiative that allows the low-income traders to earn a sustainable income by operating in a regulated environment. 'We encourage residents in the surrounding area to support these traders by patronising the MyKiosk stalls here,' Wee said. In response to feedback about blocked parking spaces, he said the kiosks have been repositioned. 'We have extra car parks for the people nearby and for the people who come in to shop with the MyKiosk here,' he said. Wee (right) buys a pineapple from a trader. Also seen are Kho and Zaiedi. – Photo by Chimon Upon He shared that each stall was constructed under a transparent tender process for RM13,500, well below comparable schemes, and built to strict specifications. Traders enjoy six months' free rent, after which they pay a quarterly rental of approximately RM140, he explained. Regarding the two kiosks at Friendship Park, Wee said applications are still being evaluated. 'We must be fair to select them and to select that, you know, the one that should be there rather than having to be there. 'We don't want it to spoil the actual image of Taman Sahabat,' he said. He added MBKS will monitor all hawker centres within its jurisdiction to ensure that subsidised rents translate into genuinely affordable prices for consumers, not just benefits for traders. 'We want you to still be able to find RM3, RM3.50 kolo mee, coffee that you don't have to pay RM4.80 but just RM1 in areas like Kenyalang, Bintawa, and Sungai Apong. 'Subsidies must benefit the rakyat, not operate without purpose,' he said. He emphasised that every step, from calling tenders to selecting traders, followed established procedures designed to serve public interests. Also present were Kuching South deputy mayor Datuk Dr Zaiedi Suhaili and MyKiosk project organising chairperson councillor Judy Kho. lead MyKiosk Tabuan Jaya Wee Hong Seng

Digital platform aids over 88,000 S'gor businesses
ALMOST 90,000 small-scale businesses have benefitted from Platform Selangor (PLATS), created to help tide them over during the Covid-19 pandemic. The digital directory and promotional platform was developed in 2020 to aid hawkers and small-scale retailers who could not conduct their business during the movement control order (MCO). 'Over 88,000 businesses have participated and benefitted from this platform. 'We hope by the end of this year, we will reach 100,000 users,' said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari during the Platform Selangor strategic partners' appreciation ceremony at the Selangor state secretariat building in Shah Alam. 'Selangor became the first to offer Ramadan bazaar traders the opportunity to shift their business online through this digital platform. 'It has been around for five years and has enabled business opportunities beyond physical spaces, thus reaching a wider market. Several business owners have also achieved record sales.' Amirudin said PLATS recorded RM2.3mil in sales with 71,294 business transactions between Oct 20, 2024, and July 7, 2025. 'On average, daily sales are about RM13,417.70 for each active business operator between October last year and July this year,' he elaborated. He cited the success story of Dapur Kak Mala, a food and beverage business operator from Sabak Bernam that has been active on PLATS since December 2024. The business, he said, had total accumulated sales of RM262,443, with average monthly sales of RM50,000. 'This is comparable to the amount of sales achieved at food kiosks in prominent malls.' Amirudin said PLATS' success was proof that with access to opportunities, small village traders were able to reap sales like city business players. He attributed the success of PLATS to Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) Selangor and Yayasan MBI. State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said six new strategic partners were now part of PLATS to further enhance the system's success. They are Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (Pernas), MYNIC Bhd, Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), Red Giant Creative House Sdn Bhd (RGCH), Sirim Bhd and Media Selangor Sdn Bhd. Selangor's 12 local councils were also acknowledged for collectively throwing their support behind PLATS. Mohd Najwan said Agrobank also provided business infrastructure and tents this year for 1,500 Ramadan bazaars in 15 locations across five local councils. 'As a result of this initiative, total sales transactions this year recorded through Agrobank's facilities reached RM7.11mil,' he said, noting that among the locations with the highest performance was the Stadium Shah Alam Ramadan bazaar. 'It recorded participation from over 200 traders and sales transactions amounting to RM2.18mil, making it the most active bazaar in Selangor,' said Mohd Najwan.
