Relocation for traders as work to upgrade Kepayan Square starts

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Ewon handing over a canopy to one of the traders at Kepayan Square - Kuskop Pic PENAMPANG: A total of 72 small traders from Kepayan Square began preparing for a temporary relocation this week, as construction work starts on long-awaited upgrade to the public market space. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Kuskop) Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Government is taking steps to ensure that traders continue to earn a living while improvements are made to their work environment. At a handover ceremony on Tuesday, Ewon distributed canopies, tables and chairs to the affected traders, who will move to a temporary trading site nearby for the next few months. 'We want to ensure that even during this transition, their livelihood is protected,' he said. 'This is about providing a safer and more comfortable space for the community to trade in the long run.' The RM2.4 million upgrade is being jointly funded by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), City Hall (DBKK) and the Kapayan state constituency. KPKT and DBKK are each contributing RM1 million, while Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang is allocating RM400,000 from her constituency fund. Ewon said planning for the project started after he was elected Penampang MP in 2022, when he and Jannie visited the site with DBKK officials to assess its condition. 'What we saw back then was that the traders needed more than just shelter from the sun and rain. The space needed proper facilities, a roof, better flooring and proper drainage,' he said. He thanked Jannie for taking the lead in pushing for the project and raising the matter with the KPKT Minister Nga Kor Ming. 'This is a good example of what can happen when local and federal leaders work together,' he said. Jannie said the upgrade was something she had been pursuing since 2019, after hearing concerns directly from the traders. She said the location has always served more than just commercial purposes. 'This space is not just about business. It's a place where people meet, talk, share food and build connection. 'Once it has a proper roof and layout, it can serve the whole community during festive seasons, government programmes or even just a normal weekend,' she said. Also present were DBKK Deputy Director-General (Operations) Robert Lipon and local leaders involved in coordinating the relocation plan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Raid puts speedy end to 10-minute passport forgers

Compiled by TARRENCE TAN and BEH YUEN HUI A DOCUMENT forgery syndicate operating out of an apartment unit in Kepong has been dismantled by the police, reported Malay daily Sinar Harian . According to the report, the syndicate's activities were uncovered during a raid on July 22 by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department's enforcement division following public tip-off and investigations. During the raid, hundreds of passports in the midst of being forged were discovered in the three-bedroom apartment and two Bangladeshi men in their twenties were caught red-handed processing the fake passports. It is understood that the syndicate charged RM400 for each fake passport, and that they are able to produce a fake passport in just 10 minutes. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff, who led the operation after one month of surveillance, said the syndicate's modus operandi involved providing fake passports to deceive clinics in obtaining health reports from Foreign Workers Medical Examination Monitoring Agency. > Actress and entrepreneur Wawa Zainal has denied that her health issues over the past year were related to 'penyakit ain', or the evil eye, reported Berita Harian . 'Before this, I rarely got fever, but now, I often suffer from gastritis. But I can't say I am afflicted by 'ain.' If I have hurt anyone's feelings, I apologise,' said the 34-year-old Wawa, whose real name in Nur Hawa Zainal Abidin. Earlier this month, Wawa, a mother of four, was hospitalised for a severe gastritis attack. Sarawak named among world's top transitioning industrial clusters

KUCHING: Sarawak has been acknowledged as one of only 36 Transitioning Industrial Clusters worldwide and the sole representative from Malaysia, announced Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The recognition, granted by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, highlights the state's commitment to green energy development. 'Last month, I was invited to speak at the World Economic Forum - Summer Davos 2025. However, due to my wife's health, I sent Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, as my representative. The organisers later requested my personal participation, but the slot was eventually given to the Prime Minister of Singapore. This demonstrates Sarawak's growing global influence,' he said during the Marina bridge project groundbreaking ceremony. Abang Johari attributed Sarawak's international standing to its sustainable development policies. 'During my recent visit to Japan, officials commended Sarawak's focus on new energy solutions. We must maintain this momentum while ensuring development benefits the people, such as through projects like the RM400 million Marina bridge in Miri,' he added. The Public Works Department (JKR) confirmed that the Marina bridge contract is expected to be awarded in Q4 2025. Once completed, the bridge will connect Miri Marina to Miri Peninsula, reducing travel distance to Pulau Melayu and Lutong from 10km to just 2km, cutting travel time from 25 minutes to five. Abang Johari also revealed ongoing exploration in Miri's Adong area for potential natural resource reserves. 'Studies are underway to assess its viability. If results are positive, the state will proceed with extraction,' he said. Additionally, Sarawak is planning to boost Miri's tourism sector with a new road linking Miri to Marudi and Long Terawan, enhancing accessibility to northern Sarawak's key attractions. - Bernama
