Geely Unveils Galaxy A7 EM-i Plug-in Hybrid Sedan with Over 2,100km Driving Range

Geely has officially introduced the Galaxy A7 EM-i, a new plug-in hybrid sedan under its Galaxy sub-brand, aiming to combine high efficiency with extended range in a sleek, modern package. The car, which sits below the Galaxy Star 8 EM-i in the model hierarchy, enters the competitive mid-size sedan segment with a focus on affordability, practicality, and cutting-edge hybrid technology. The Galaxy A7 EM-i promises exceptional fuel economy, consuming just over 2 litres per 100km when running on petrol alone. With its hybrid powertrain, the car is capable of achieving a total driving range of more than 2,100km under certain configurations, according to Geely's internal testing. Designed to appeal to budget-conscious consumers, the model is expected to be priced around 100,000 yuan (RM58,937), positioning it as a compelling option in the growing plug-in hybrid market. Stylistically, the A7 EM-i reflects a strong contemporary aesthetic. A wide LED light bar stretches across the front fascia, linking angular headlamps that give the car an assertive stance. Aggressive lower air intakes reinforce the sporty feel, while the bodywork incorporates sculpted sides and turbine-inspired alloy wheels. Gloss black trim around the windows and a clean rear profile — highlighted by a full-width taillight and subtle ducktail spoiler — round off the striking exterior. Unlike some modern rivals, Geely retains traditional door handles, prioritising practicality over novelty. Inside, the A7 EM-i features a redesigned cabin that blends digital sophistication with ergonomic usability. The dashboard includes a dual-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a prominent digital instrument panel, and a floating central touchscreen infotainment system. Practical elements remain, with rotary media controls, physical climate control buttons, and cleverly concealed cupholders all contributing to user convenience. Under the bonnet, the A7 EM-i utilises a 1.5-litre petrol engine delivering 112hp, working in tandem with an electric motor. While Geely has not released full performance specifications, it is widely expected that the A7 EM-i will share its drivetrain architecture with the larger Star 8 EM-i, which combines a 238hp electric motor with a single-speed DHT transmission and offers a total system output of up to 350hp. Two electric-only variants will be available, with driving ranges of either 60km or 130km on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Depending on the selected battery configuration, the total range reaches up to 1,600 km, with one high-capacity version reportedly capable of surpassing 2,100km — an impressive figure in the hybrid category. Geely is expected to confirm final pricing and the official launch date of the Galaxy A7 EM-i in the coming weeks, as anticipation builds around this new contender in the plug-in hybrid market.

KPWKM reviewing welfare support for families of FRU officers killed in road crash

K UCHING: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) is reviewing financial assistance, through the Social Welfare Department (JKM), for the families of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers killed in a recent road accident in Perak. KPWKM Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the review would consider support already provided through insurance and police welfare schemes. 'We are looking into what has been given so far. There are insurance payouts and police contributions, and from there, we will assess what more we can provide. 'Generally, we can offer additional support,' she told reporters at today's press conference on the 2025 Nyamai festival. Nancy added that the ministry has obtained all necessary family information in collaboration with the police and the Home Affairs Ministry. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay previously said that the victims' next of kin would receive compensation and financial aid amounting to between RM58,000 and RM269,700, including RM25,000 from the National Heroes and Defence Trust Fund (TAPPN). The Social Welfare Department (JKM) is also prepared to provide psychological assistance to the families. However, Nancy said counselling would be offered only once families have had time to grieve. 'The sessions will be provided, but for now, we want to give the families space as they are still coping emotionally,' she said. The crash occurred on May 13, when the FRU truck collided with a lorry carrying gravel stone while the officers returned to Ipoh after completing their duties under 'Op Chariot' in Teluk Intan. Five officers were seriously injured in the incident, while four others sustained minor injuries.

No drugs found in lorry involved in fatal crash causing 9 deaths, says Malaysian police

The 45-year-old lorry driver has a criminal record of six previous cases. PHOTO: THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK No drugs found in lorry involved in fatal crash causing 9 deaths, says Malaysian police PERAK - There were no drugs found in the lorry that crashed into the vehicle carrying Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) officers, said Perak deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay on May 13. 'There were rumours suggesting he (the driver) had ketum in the lorry but we found nothing. The urine test confirmed no drugs,' he said at a press conference at the Hilir Perak police headquarters in Teluk Intan, Perak. Ketum refers to a plant used in herbal medicine, and while it is used as a traditional medicine to treat certain illnesses, it can also be misused as it contains psychoactive substances, which can have stimulant, sedative and euphoria effects, leading to addiction. It is banned in Malaysia. Mr Ayob said the 45-year-old lorry driver has a criminal record of six previous cases - one for drugs, one for rape and four for theft. However, he said all these cases have already been tried in court and sentencing was passed down. He added that the suspect would be remanded on May 14. Asked about claims the driver tried to avoid another vehicle, Mr Ayob said they would investigate all aspects and could not confirm anything at this early stage of the investigation. Providing more details on the incident, he said the FRU's Unit 5 vehicle involved was heading back to Ipoh from Sungai Senam in a convoy when the head-on collision occurred at KM15 Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam at 8.30am on May 6. The convoy consisted of seven FRU vehicles – four lorries, one bus and two four-wheel-drive vehicles. One of the lorries carrying 18 personnel, crashed into the fifth vehicle in the convoy. Eight died on the spot and one subsequently died from injuries while receiving treatment at the Teluk Intan hospital around 10.50am. Mr Ayob said another nine people were injured – six in critical condition at the hospital's red zone and three in the yellow zone, which is for the less critical. He added one has been transferred to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for surgery. 'Out of the nine who died, seven were Malays, one was Indian and one was Orang Asli (indigenous person),' Mr Ayob said. He said that three post-mortem examinations have been completed so far. 'Once (all examinations have been) completed, the bodies will be bathed at the hospital, followed by funeral prayers at the police surau here. The bodies will then be taken to Sungai Senam for another round of prayers. 'After that, we will pay our respects before the bodies are transported to their respective burial locations. Eight are in various locations in Perak and one in Kulim, Kedah,' Mr Ayob said. Mr Ayob also said financial aid to families of the victims would be provided under the police welfare fund. 'Families may receive between RM58,000 (S$301) and RM299,000 each,' he said. THE STAR/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
