AirAsia's digital platform ordered to halt airline ticket sales in Manila
KUALA LUMPUR: The Philippines has ordered AirAsia's digital platform, AirAsia Move, to cease all airline ticket sales in the country following complaints that it was charging illegally high fares. reported that the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) issued a cease-and-desist order against the platform, with Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announcing on Sunday that police had been instructed to take down its website. The move came after reports surfaced of exorbitant ticket prices during recent transport disruptions in Tacloban City. According to the Philippines' Transportation Department, a one-way ticket from Manila to Tacloban listed on AirAsia Move costs as much as 77,000 pesos (about RM6,300), nearly three times the price offered by Philippine Airlines for the same route. "The government will not tolerate these abusive practices. We will use the full force of the law against unscrupulous online platforms exploiting the public," Dizon was quoted as saying in a press conference. He said the authorities were preparing to file a case of criminal economic sabotage against the platform, which is owned by Capital A Berhad and affiliated with budget airline Philippines AirAsia. The CAB, which regulates airfare pricing in the country, noted that the excessive fares appeared to take advantage of limited transport options in Tacloban after a key bridge closure disrupted trucking routes.

Police detain man, seize 365kg of syabu worth over RM13mil
KANGAR: Perak police seized over 365kg of methamphetamine estimated at RM13.14mil and detained a 40-year-old man at Kampung Belat Batu, Beseri near Padang Besar on Sunday (June 1). State police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the drug seizure and arrest were carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department of the Perlis police headquarters at 3.30am. He said before the arrest, the suspect was seen alighting from a sedan and heading towards another sedan. "The results of an inspection on the second car found 17 stitched bags containing drugs suspected to be methamphetamine, believed to have originated from Thailand," he said at a press conference at the Perlis headquarters here Monday. Muhammad said initial investigations found that the suspect is believed to have used a forested area in the Padang Besar district as a transit point before the drugs were sent to the southern part of the peninsula, with the amount of the illicit substance being enough for 3.6 million users. He said the initial urine screening of the man found him positive for methamphetamine and he has a criminal record related to drug cases. "The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting Sunday and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are looking for another suspect who fled to assist in the investigation," he said. Meanwhile, Muhammad also said that a 30-year-old Thai man was arrested along with the seizure of two packages of compressed ganja (cannabis), weighing 2kg, hidden in a garbage bin in the Taman Singgah Sana area, Padang Besar at 2.15am on Sunday. "The drugs are estimated to be worth RM6,200 and can be used by around 20,000 addicts. 'The suspect was also found to be positive for methamphetamine. The man was also remanded for seven days starting Sunday, and the investigation is being conducted under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he added. - Bernama

Man convicted of cyberbullying now accused of extortion, harassment
KUALA LUMPUR: A man, previously convicted in a cyberbullying case linked to the death of a social media influencer, is now accused of harassing and extorting a 28-year-old disabled woman, just two months after his release from prison. The man was sentenced to 12 months in jail in Sept last year after pleading guilty to cyberbullying A. Rajeswary, better known as "Esha", who was found dead in July 2024 following months of online harassment. He was released from prison in March this year. The latest accusation against him came from a visually impaired woman from Bestari Jaya, who claimed she had engaged a TikTok influencer to help recover RM6,000 from her ex-boyfriend. In a police report sighted by the New Straits Times, the victim, identified as Thiviah, claimed that the influencer had introduced her to the suspect, who offered to 'mediate' the issue in exchange for a monetary reward. On May 27, the suspect allegedly hosted a live TikTok broadcast, during which he confronted the victim's ex-boyfriend online and demanded he repay the sum. Thiviah claimed that after the live session ended, the suspect contacted her and asked for RM3,000 as payment. She claimed that while she had agreed to give him a token sum beforehand, the amount was never discussed. When she said she could not pay the amount as she was her family's sole breadwinner, he told he to pay him RM500 first and to settle the rest later. She however maintained she could not afford the amount. Thiviah, in her report, claimed that the suspect then began harassing her. She claimed that on May 28, the suspect rang her and threatened to release her personal details and photographs if he did not pay him the RM3,000. She also claimed that he coerced her into a live TikTok session with him, where she was allegedly subjected to slurs and insults over her physical appearance and disability. Speaking to the NST, Thiviah claimed she was subjected to bullying. "I am partially blind. For someone like me to be bullied and threatened so aggressively — it was completely unacceptable. "I am thankful my parents are not on social media. The words he used on me were deeply degrading and abusive. "Just because I couldn't pay him for 'mediating' and getting my money back from my ex, he said so many nasty things, which were all untrue," she claimed. Thiviah has since lodged a report at the Sentul police headquarters, citing fear for her safety and concern that her images could be misused online. Meanwhile, Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sukarno Mohd Zahari when contacted today, said the case is under police investigation. "We are tracking down the suspect to facilitate investigations," he said. Sukarno said police have opened an investigation under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting a person's modesty.

DBKK urged to stop acting as federal tax collector
Yong KOTA KINABALU (June 1): Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) should stop playing the role of federal tax collector to hunt down inactive taxpayers, said former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee. He said these hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders. They are small, informal traders already battling rising costs, subsidy cuts, and declining purchasing power. Yong said the CEO of Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia (Inland Revenue Board) had announced that LHDN Sabah collected RM5.7 billion in taxes from Sabah in 2024. LHDN also targets tax revenues of RM6.2 billion for this year 2025. This means an average of RM6 billion in taxes from Sabah per year for 2024 and 2025 alone. 'It is not rocket science that 40% of that RM6 billion tax revenues is RM2.4 billion. This RM6 billion tax revenues excludes other tax revenues collected by the Customs Department and other federal agencies in Sabah. 'Yet Sabah has not received its rightful 40 per cent share of that revenue that Sabah is entitled to under the constitution,' he said in a statement on Sunday. Yong said there is absolutely no reason for the federal government to delay making annual payments of at least RM2 billion to the Sabah government. Instead, Sabah is paid an interim amount of only RM600 million, which is a figure plucked from nowhere. He said enforcing tax compliance in this climate, while RM2 billion in Sabah's share remains unreturned, only worsens economic fragility and damages local economic resilience. 'DBKK must adjust its mindset. It should stop aligning with federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. DBKK should not contradicts its role as a local government agency in uplifting livelihoods in Kota Kinabalu city,' said Yong. He called on the federal government to honour the 40 per cent entitlement without further delay. Until then, tax enforcement in this region should be re-evaluated, paused if necessary, and guided by consultation with the Sabah government and Sabah business organisations.

Fama Fest aims RM6mil sales, pushes for youth participation
GOPENG: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry is targeting RM6 million in total sales through the Fama Fest programme organised by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) in six states. Its deputy minister, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the programme will be held in Sarawak, Johor, Perak, Selangor, Sabah and conclude in Negri Sembilan in September. "The Perak government remains one of the key contributors to the Fama Fest series, which is now in its seventh year. "Last year, the sales target for Perak was RM2 million, but due to overwhelming response, we surpassed that with RM2.6 million in total sales," he said when met after the closing ceremony of Fama Fest @Perak 2025 at RTC Perak here today. He said this year's target for Fama Fest @Perak had been raised to RM3 million, with 210 booths operating over five days from May 29. "Fama Fest @Perak is usually the top contributor, accounting for 30 per cent of total nationwide sales at last year's event," he said. Arthur said the programme is one of the government's initiatives to attract youths into the agriculture sector, which is currently dominated by individuals aged 60 and above. "Events like this create more marketing avenues for local producers and demonstrate that agriculture and agri-food are lucrative industries with strong income potential," he said. He emphasised the need to move away from conventional farming methods towards more modern approaches that incorporate technology and innovation, adding that this creates a long value chain, from production to operations and maintenance. He said the ministry strongly encourages participation in agriculture-related Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses offered under the ministry. "We will cover all expenses for these programmes, including courses, accommodation and daily allowances. This is part of our effort to attract young people into agriculture," he said. On May 29, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also energy transition and water transformation minister, revealed that 224,147 agricultural operators aged between 15 and 45 were recorded in the 2024 Agriculture Census, making up 22.2 per cent of the sector's workforce. – Bernama
