Coastal erosion closes in on village homes in Tanjung Dawai
SUNGAI PETANI: Once a quiet coastal village, Kampung Huma in Tanjung Dawai is now teetering on the edge as coastal erosion threatens residents' homes. Powerful waves and creeping coastal erosion are threatening to swallow homes, some of which now stand mere feet from the sea. Dozens of families who have lived there for decades find themselves in trouble, unsure how much longer their houses can hold against the tides. Fifty-six-year-old fisherman Abdullah Ahmad said his house, built more than 20 years ago, has suffered significant damage due to the unrelenting wave impact. "My home used to be two kilometres from the shore. "Now, the sea is right there. Even the stone breakwater that we hoped would protect us is slowly disappearing beneath the waves," he said when met. He said a storm in August last year destroyed his kitchen and toilet, forcing him and his family to evacuate. "They now live with his son, having deemed their home unsafe. "When the waves came, nearly two metres high, we fled with only some clothes and important documents. "It felt like a nightmare. We stayed at a temporary shelter for a few days before moving in with my son," he said. Abdullah is one of at least 23 families in the village facing similar struggles. With no financial means to rebuild, he said he has no choice but to wait and hope. Ailing from diabetes and unable to fish, Abdullah said the family now relies solely on his wife, who earns RM60 a day as a shop assistant. "We can't afford a new house, and it's too dangerous to move back." Checks at the village yesterday found strong waves still visibly crashing against the remaining defences, which consisted of crumbling rocks. Another villager, Suhaida Abu Hassan, 44, said recent waves on July 13 surged into homes, shaking them violently. "Every time there's a storm, our house trembles like it's a tsunami. We can't sleep. If there's a warning, we grab our things and flee to the hall. Last year, 24 families had to evacuate," she said. "Some homes are already hollowed out underneath, just waiting to collapse," she added. For Mohd Razif Nayan, 57, who has lived in Kampung Huma all his life, the erosion became critical after the 2004 tsunami. "Back then, we still had thick forests, and the water never reached our homes. But since then, the sea has been eating away at the land, year after year," he said. The makeshift breakwater, he added, offers little protection. "Waves can crash in anytime. It's too close. If nothing is done, our homes will vanish. If the sea rises at night, we might not even have time to escape," Razif warned. Ismail Dan, 45, echoed the plea for immediate action. "If our homes collapse, I wouldn't know where to bring my wife and children. "We urge the authorities to raise and reinforce the stone barrier before more homes are lost. At this rate, they won't survive the year," he said. Universiti Utara Malaysia maritime affairs expert Dr Mohammad Zaki Ahmad had previously told the New Straits Times that such coastal events have grown in frequency and severity in recent years due to climate change and gravitational tidal forces. He said the current spell of intense wave activity along the Tanjung Dawai coastline highlights the urgent need for lasting mitigation measures as erosion creeps ever closer.

Siti Kasim awarded RM160k in damages over arrest
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has awarded lawyer and activist Siti Kasim RM160,000 in damages after allowing her civil suit against the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), 15 of its officers and seven others over her unlawful arrest and detention during a private fundraising event in 2016. Justice Su Tiang Joo ordered the defendants to pay RM100,000 in exemplary damages, RM60,000 in aggravated damages and RM100,000 in legal costs to the plaintiff, reported Bernama. The court held that Siti Kasim, whose full name is Siti Zabedah Kasim, had proven on the balance of probabilities that she was wrongfully arrested and falsely imprisoned by two Jawi officers after exiting the ballroom of the hotel where the event was held. 'In my considered view, there was misfeasance in public office by the defendants in conducting a raid and apprehending a participant at a state event, without ensuring the lawful exercise of their powers, thereby causing unnecessary fear and discomfort,' the judge said. Siti Kasim filed the suit in September 2019, where she claimed false imprisonment, misfeasance in public office and a violation of her constitutional right to personal liberty under the Federal Constitution. She maintained that she had not obstructed any officer and was merely carrying out her duties as a legal practitioner. On Aug 21, 2020, the Magistrate's Court here acquitted and discharged Siti Kasim of the charge of obstructing public servants, ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case under Section 186 of the Penal Code.

100pc rental hike for Sandakan stalls draws ire
Published on: Saturday, July 19, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 19, 2025 By: Abbey Junior Text Size: Tan talking to an affected hawker. SANDAKAN: A 100pc rental hike for stalls at Sandakan's central market night wholesale section has sparked outrage among traders, with a local leader urging the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) to step in. Warisan Pekan Sandakan branch chief Stanley Tan Vui Chung said he received complaints from hawkers operating in the late-night to early-morning section, where monthly rental has reportedly surged from RM150 to RM300. Advertisement This prompted him to visit the site and speak to the hawkers, many of whom were unhappy with the sudden increase. 'Most of them are upset because they don't understand why the rent has doubled overnight,' he said, adding that the section is managed by a private company appointed by MPS. About 80 hawkers are affected. Tan said they were previously charged RM2 per night (RM60 monthly), which was later raised to RM5 (RM150), and is now set to increase to RM10 per night (RM300 monthly). 'What makes this absurd is that these stalls don't even have basic amenities. No electricity, no water, no canopy — just a bare lot,' he said. In comparison, stalls inside MPS-controlled markets only pay RM60 a month and are equipped with fans, lighting, water supply and proper structures. 'Outside hawkers have to bring their own tents, lights, fans and water — and still pay more. It's unfair,' he added. Tan hopes the private company will reconsider the hike and take responsibility for providing basic facilities, saying the current situation is unacceptable. Although the fee was imposed by a private company, Tan reminded that the area still falls under the Council's jurisdiction and oversight. 'I urge MPS to inspect the site, review the charges imposed by the company and ensure fairness. The people are already burdened by the rising cost of living,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Green Tech Water Pump Brings Clean Water To Pulau Teluk Renjuna
TUMPAT, July 18 (Bernama) -- A green technology water pump that began full operations today has ended the need for about 3,000 residents in the Tumpat island cluster, particularly on Pulau Teluk Renjuna, to rely on murky river water. Yayasan Infaq Infra Malaysia chairman Azuhan Fauzi said the RM60,000 project utilises a 3kW solar system and a 5kWh lithium battery, and is equipped with a 500-litre rainwater harvesting system. He said the water is sourced from a borehole at the Mukim Teluk Renjuna Mosque and filtered through three filters in the pump system. 'This pump can supply up to 1,000 gallons of clean water per day to 200 households here,' he told reporters on the island today. Meanwhile, resident Paudin Yunus, 69, said they had been facing low water pressure and murky water issues for over 20 years, forcing them to rely on the unclean waters of the Sungai Kelantan for bathing and washing. 'We are grateful to finally receive clean water supply through the construction of this pump house. It has been a great help to us,' he said. Another resident, Zakaria Rafi, 54, said previously they had to purchase filtered water from the mainland and transport it by boat, their only means of transport. 'This clean water pump resolves the water shortage issues frequently faced by residents. Alhamdulillah, we no longer need to buy water as we now have a supply of clean water on the island,' he said. -- BERNAMA
