Doctor baffled by R2. 7 million electricity bill due to meter reading error
The eThekwini Municipality stated that the high electricity bill that a Reservoir Hills doctor received of R2.7 million was due to an incorrect meter reading that was submitted. Image: Supplied The eThekwini Municipality stated that the high electricity bill that a Reservoir Hills doctor received of R2.7 million in April 2025 was due to an incorrect meter reading that was submitted. Doctor Terence Govender said his average monthly bill was R8 500 and was left bemused by his latest bill. For March, Govender was billed R2.7 million in total. His bill for April totalled R91 000. This included water of R1 680, electricity of R55 000, cleansing and solid waste of R256, interest on arrears of R23 641, and VAT of R8 636. The total bill for March and April amounted to R2.8 million. eThekwini Municipality's Spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said they have noted the recent inquiry regarding an unusually high electricity bill reflected on a customer's account. The municipality stated that it wanted to provide clarity on the issue after investigating the matter. According to the municipality, the circumstances that led to this situation were: The cause of the high bill was an incorrect reading submitted to e-services by the customer. On March 25, 2025, the customer submitted a meter reading through the municipality's e-services platform. The reading submitted was 20364, which has fewer digits than the 6-digit reading, which ought to have been submitted. The municipality has also been advocating for customers to submit their readings on e-services as an alternative and appreciate the use of it. Subsequently, a routine meter reading was conducted on May 6, 2025, by municipal staff and captured the correct reading of 204020 units. However, this reading is currently pending final billing, and in the next billing, the adjustment of the R2m will be corrected. Sisilana said the municipality acknowledges the inconvenience this has caused and wishes to reassure both the customer and the public that this matter is receiving urgent attention. 'The customer will be contacted and will be educated on how to read their meter and submit on e-services. However, all necessary adjustments have been made already and will reflect actual consumption and correct the billing anomaly in the next bill of June 2025,' Sisilana said. She said that if residents have queries, the municipality's Revenue Management Unit (RMU) remains available for direct engagement. Krisendra Bisetty of Bisetty Attorneys said he is handling approximately 60 cases of high bills in eThekwini. 'I also have a client who owns a petrol station in Westville who has a R1.5m bill. I recently got a Sydenham woman's R1.5m water bill reversed in two days. She tried for two years without success,' Bisetty stated. In January 2025, a Tongaat homeowner, Arumoogum 'Reggie' Pillay, won his case at the Durban Regional Court after being billed approximately R322 900. Ish Prahladh, chairperson of the eThekwini Residents and Ratepayers Association (ERRA), said residents throughout the municipality were also experiencing similar challenges. Asad Gaffar, eThekwini Ratepayers Protest Movement (ERPM), said there is also no clear political will to change the management of the city and the department to address this serious crisis. 'The city has put its citizens into a predicament, and quite frankly, they simply just don't care. It is about time that the residents and ratepayers of eThekwini unite and stand united in a defiance campaign against this city,' Gaffar said. [email protected]

Local 12-year-old boy shares passion for golf ahead of 2025 Oakmont US Open
There's a short window for golf in Western Pennsylvania, but a 6th grader has found a way to put a club to a ball every day. And all this practice set him up to return to the home of the Masters to compete. 'I think his story is that by grace he's been given a gift, and it's what you do with that gift,' said TJ Ameredes. At 12 years old, Niko Ameredes already knows what he wants to be when he grows up. Advertisement 'I want to be a golfer,' said Niko Ameredes. 'A PGA Tour golfer.' At 2 years old, he'd ride around in the cart with his dad. 'By the age of 6, he was shooting even par from about 100-150 yards out,' said TJ. So at 6 years old, he started competing. 'My first win was probably US Kids Local Tour, but my first big win was probably Ohio State,' said Niko. And then, an accomplishment some wait decades for. 'Hit the five iron,' said Niko. 'It hit right above the pin. Spun back. It looked like it was going off the green. Then it went in the hole. I jumped around, and then I said it's about time. Then I started crying a little bit.' Advertisement He even recently played in a tournament with a broken hand. 'I broke my hand in the middle of a golf round yeah, and I played with it,' said Niko. Fast-forward five months, and he'll compete on April 6th in the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia ahead of the Masters. He also qualified in 2022. 'It was very exciting to call up my husband and say we're going back,' said Samantha Ameredes. 'Augusta,' said Niko. 'It's going to be fabulous.' 'Competitive golf is high pressure,' said TJ. 'So when we get done with his tournaments, we make sure that he has the ability to decompress and do things that a 12-year-old would want to do.' Advertisement But for Niko, golf is what this 12-year-old wants to do. 'I love the sport,' said Niko. 'It's so much fun.' 'He's the first one jumping out of the car,' said The Club at Nevillewood Head Golf Professional Cory Livingston. 'And then, he's the last one where his dad is like 'Come on we got to get in' and he's still pounding balls. The number of balls that he hits during his practice sessions is pretty unbelievable, but they all mean something.' 'He practices seven days a week,' said Samantha. 'He's usually dragging my husband to Nevillewood when it's nice out or the dome at RMU. They're stopping anywhere and everywhere to hit balls.' Advertisement 'It's amazing how gracious people have been,' said TJ. 'How kind they have been. From the members coming up to him and speaking to him directly, congratulating him, to the Head Pro Cory Livingston, to our instructor here, Kevin Shields. And how much they have embraced the journey that he is on.' At the US Open at Oakmont in June, Niko's mom, Samantha, is volunteering on Hole 9 for their home club, Nevillewood. Niko will be at a golf camp at Wake Forest for the week but plans to be there for the weekend championship rounds. 'He's going to have the ability to watch a Major in his backyard in Pittsburgh,' said TJ. 'Oakmont itself does a fabulous job. I've been to the Open there before. The ability to have that Major event there. And for him to see the professionals up close and take in how they approach the game and approach golf, it's priceless.' Niko's Past Accomplishments: Advertisement 2022/2025 Drive Chip and Putt Finalist 2024 US Kids Worlds: Finished Runner-up 2023 US Kids Worlds: Finished 14 2022 US Kids Worlds: Finished 10 2021 US Kids Worlds: Finished 6 2x Notah Begay Regional Champion Niko's PGA Jr. League Team made it to the 2024 PGA Jr. League Championship in Texas 4x US Kids Ohio State Champion Regional Championship wins in Punta Cana, Canada and Virginia 2024 North Ohio Qualifier Optimist Champion Many top 5 finishes in regional tournaments Many local tour championships in PA and Ohio Niko won longest drive at PGA Jr. League Championship in Texas. Robert Morris falls 90-81 after tough fight against Alabama in NCAA Tournament
Robert Morris fell to Alabama 90-81 on Friday, knocking the Colonials out of the NCAA Tournament. No. 15 Robert Morris put up a tough fight at Rocket Arena in Cleveland but ultimately lost to No. 2 Crimson Tide. Robert Morris punched their ticket to the dance after winning the Horizon League tournament 89-78 over Youngstown State. The Colonials last qualified for the tournament in 2020, when they won the Northeast Conference tournament championship, but that tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so this is their first appearance in a tournament game since 2015. RMU came close to a big upset in 2010, when they lost to No. 2 seed Villanova in overtime. Friday morning, some students boarded a bus to go watch the game at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, which is only a few hours from Pittsburgh. A strong contingent of RMU fans was expected. Their ticket allotment sold out on Monday. For some of the students, the early wake-up call was no match for them. "Oh, I've been up since 5 in the morning," RMU sophomore Gianna Canova said. Canova and Julia Klonowski were part of a group riding to the game. It was them and over a hundred of their fellow students. "I've been really wanting to go because I've never seen a basketball game," Klonowski said. Earlier Friday morning, RMU's band and cheer squads made the trip to Cleveland. "It's a whole new generation of people getting a chance to do this," said Marty Galosi, RMU's deputy athletic director and chief of staff. The students wouldn't have been able to go without some help. "We had a generous RMU alum who purchased some tickets and t-shirts and buses to send our students to go have a memorable experience," said RMU chief experience officer John Locke. They were hoping the "memorable experience" would end with an upset win. "I remember the game versus [University of Kentucky] whenever we beat them in 2013," Canova said. "I really hope we get that same feeling tonight."

College basketball fans celebrate first full day of March Madness at Pittsburgh bars
Busted brackets or not, it's the best day of the year for college basketball fans who are watching the games morning to night from their couch or favorite bar. All the brackets are filled out and the first round of the NCAA tournament is underway. We stopped at a popular spot on Pittsburgh's North Shore Thursday where the madness has begun. "I got about 11 brackets, a ton of betting, and then maybe 4 or 5 other types of polls and things that I'm in," Joe Kene said. "Oh, it's bigger than Christmas. Christmas is for the kids, all these holidays are for the kids, and this is for me. I tell my wife every year, you know I'm going out today, and I'm going out tomorrow too. This is for me!" said Kene. "Just nonstop action," said John Cotton. Basketball fans packed into Tom's Watch Bar on the North Shore to root for their favorite team or national champion pick. "The championship I have Florida vs. Duke. I have Florida winning that," said Erik Gensler. "Florida beating Houston in the championship," Kene said. "Oh, Florida!" Cotton said. Yearly traditions were alive and well for just about everyone inside "I've been here all day, just watching games all day, so many TVs, beer, that's what it's all about," Cotton said. "Me and my group of friends come out for the first day of March Madness every year. We've been doing it for over a decade," said Melissa Reese. "I've been doing this for 15 years, it's just the love of the game, I love basketball whether you bet on it or not it doesn't matter to me," Gensler said. "We got here at 11:30 a.m. today, me and my buddies we've been going out since 2009. We went to Robert Morris," said Kene. There were a lot of RMU fans warming up for day two. Robert Morris is set to take on Alabama on Friday afternoon. "I'm rooting for RMU no matter what I gotta root for them...I got them beating Alabama and then losing but that's for the heart. You gotta have them winning at least a game," Kene said. "I went to RMU I'm old, so I graduated a long time so it's good to see them back in it. I honestly think they have a chance, Alabama is a tough team but I honestly think they have a chance to win the game," said Gensler. Several people said they decided to skip work or leave early for the start of the big dance. "That's tomorrow's problem, not today's problem," Kene said.
