Census delayed to speed up delimitation: P Chidambaram

Chennai: Former union finance minister P Chidambaram said on Thursday that the Union govt had delayed the census deliberately to undertake the delimitation exercise. "A delayed Census after 2026 will trigger the provision that delimitation shall be done immediately afterwards. That is why the announcement to conduct a Census in 2027. Since the Census will be conducted in 2027, delimitation will follow," Chidambaram said in a social media post. Claiming that Tamil Nadu and several states will stand to lose seats in the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram said Prime Minister Modi is moving "step-by-step to achieve the RSS-BJP's mischievous goal of reducing the representation of the southern states and increasing the representation of the northern states." The BJP govt at the centre had announced that the decadal census, which was scheduled to have happened in 2021, will commence from March, 2027. Chidambaram said some political parties undermine the dangers of delimitation exercise. "Even now, not all the political parties in the to-be-affected states are alive to the dangers of delimitation on the basis of proportional representation (one person, one vote)," Chidambaram said. Appreciating chief minister M K Stalin for voicing out his opposition to the delay in census, Chidambaram said he was glad that Stalin has articulated the dangers of census in 2027 and delimitation soon after the census.

Opposition Party Does Not Mean, To Oppose Nation: Rijiju Slams Rahul Gandhi Over His Narender Surrender Remark

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his 'Narender Surrender' remark, saying that there is a limit to stupidity and opposition. Rijiju added that being from the opposition party does not mean opposing the country. 'There is a limit to stupidity and opposition. There's nobody in Congress Party to tell him that being in the Opposition Party does not mean, to oppose the nation?' Rijiju said in a post on X. मूर्खता और विरोध की भी एक सीमा होती है! TMC MP Mahua Moitra ties the knot in Germany, husband Odisha politician

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, known for her fiery speeches in Parliament, has married Supreme Court lawyer Pinaki Misra, a former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP from Odisha. Moitra confirmed the news to The Indian Express over the phone from Germany, where she got married in a low-key ceremony on May 30, according to sources. A photograph of the two, all decked up, at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate was published by The Telegraph. The two-term MP from Krishnanagar, who had a successful career as a banker with JP Morgan's London and New York operations before quitting her cushy job to return to the country and join politics, was earlier married to Danish financier Lars Brorson, but they later divorced. Moitra, 50, was in a relationship with lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, but the two had a public fallout amid the 'cash for query' allegations that led to her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December 2023, months before the parliamentary elections. She was accused of accepting gifts and cash from Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for sharing her Parliament login ID with him and asking questions on his behalf. Dehadrai, whom Moitra later described as a 'jilted ex', was the complainant in the case. Born in Assam's Cachar district in 1974, Moitra had a fairly affluent upbringing in a family of tea planters and graduated from a college in Massachusetts, US, with a degree in economics and mathematics. After leaving her corporate job and returning to the country, Moitra dived headfirst into politics. She first joined the Congress in 2008, where the party gave her the job of leading the 'aam aadmi ka sipahi (common man's soldier)' booth-level campaign that Rahul Gandhi had conceived. With the Trinamool Congress (TMC) increasingly looking poised to end decades of Left Front rule and the Congress a shadow of its past self, Moitra joined the Mamata Banerjee-led party two years later. After toiling away in district politics for a few years, her big break came in 2016 when she won from the largely rural Karimpur constituency in Nadia district. Three years later, the party fielded her in the Lok Sabha elections, looking to utilise her oratorical skills on the national stage. Her debut speech in Parliament in which she targeted the BJP government over the 'early signs of fascism' went viral on social media and established Moitra as an articulate spokesperson of the TMC on the national politics stage. Since then, she has made the headlines several times with her speeches targeting the Modi government and the RSS-BJP ideology. Moitra has also often been at the centre of focus over her relationship with her party. Before the Lok Sabha polls, party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee admonished her during an administrative review meeting in Nadia because of bickering over ticket distribution. In April, she was involved in a public spat with her Lok Sabha party colleague Kalyan Banerjee. Who is Pinaki Misra? Pinaki Misra, Moitra's husband, is a veteran politician from Odisha who was the Congress MP from Puri in 1996. A senior lawyer, he later joined Naveen Patnaik's BJD and won Puri again in the 2009 and 2014 elections, becoming the party's face in Delhi. Misra, who has a son and a daughter from a previous marriage, also came under fire during the 'cash-for-query' scandal, with the BJP demanding his expulsion from the BJD, citing Hiranandani's affidavit to the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee. Misra dismissed the allegations as false and warned of legal action against the BJP. Belonging to a prominent Odia Brahmin family, Misra is the grandson of eminent poet and socialist leader Godabarish Misra, a Gandhian who opposed the caste system. Pinaki's father Lokanath Misra was a two-term MLA who was initially with the Congress and later the Swatantra Party. He served as the Assam governor from 1991 to 1997. Misra's uncle Ranganath Misra was the 21st Chief Justice of India. His cousin Justice Dipak Misra became the 45th CJI in 2017. Ravik Bhattacharya is the Chief of Bureau of The Indian Express, Kolkata. Over 20 years of experience in the media industry and covered politics, crime, major incidents and issues, apart from investigative stories in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Andaman Nicobar islands. Ravik won the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award in 2007 for political reporting. What Shashi Tharoor said when asked about Rahul Gandhi's ‘PM Modi surrender' remark

Responding to a question in the US about Rahul Gandhi's 'PM Modi surrendered' remark, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Wednesday that India will continue to speak the language of force as long as Pakistan continues to speak the language of terrorism. Shashi Tharoor is currently leading a parliamentary delegation aimed at exposing Pakistan's terror links in the wake of India's Operation Sindoor. Rahul Gandhi attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government on Tuesday over allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "followed" Donald Trump after the US leader called him and that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did not budge to the US in the 1971 war. When a journalist asked for his reaction to his own party leader's claim, Shashi Tharoor, after a brief smile at the question, replied, 'Well, all I can say is that we have enormous respect for the American Presidency and the American President. All we can say for ourselves is that we never particularly wanted to ask anyone to mediate. We don't have any difficulty in speaking the same language as the Pakistanis.' Tharoor said as long as Pakistan uses the language of terror, India would use the language of force. 'As long as they use the language of terrorism, we'll use the language of force that doesn't require a third party. If, on the other hand, they were to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism, we can talk to them,' he added. Tharoor pointed out that India didn't need to be told to stop during the recent conflict with the neighbours, as it would all stop the moment Pakistan stopped. 'If they (US) in turn then told the Pakistanis that you better stop and the Indians are willing to stop, that's a wonderful gesture on their part,' the Thiruvananthapuram MP said. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, Rahul Gandhi said, "Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. They run away out of fear if slight pressure is put on them. When Trump called Modiji- Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet came from the US. India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had the habit of writing letters of surrender." Rahul Gandhi doubled down on his attack through a social media post, stating, "Trump's phone came, and PM Narendra Modi ji immediately surrendered. History is witness. This is the character of the BJP-RSS; they always budge. India had bifurcated Pakistan in 1971 despite the threat from the United States. The 'babbar sher' and 'shernis' of Congress fight the Superpowers, they do not bow'.

"Rahul Gandhi's arrow directly hit the target": Congress MP Pramod Tiwari supports Rahul Gandhi's attack over Operation Sindoor

New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said Rahul Gandhi's arrow directly hit the target. Supporting Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's statement questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Operation Sindoor, Tiwari said that the BJP is discouraged and mentally distressed. Speaking to ANI, MP Pramod Tiwari said, 'Rahul Gandhi's arrow directly hit the target. He (Rahul Gandhi) did what was his responsibility towards the country, as a leader of the opposition party. The whole world knows that Donald Trump has said 12 times that he has brokered a ceasefire, by luring both sides in the name of trade. So, Rahul Gandhi fulfilled his duty, and the BJP has become discouraged and mentally distressed. That's why they are attacking in non-parliamentary language.' He demanded that the BJP leaders ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to say that US President Donald Trump is lying. 'I ask that if there is courage in the BJP, then ask its leader, Narendra Modi, to say that Trump is lying...' he said. The row began when, addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, LoP Rahul Gandhi said, 'Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. They run away out of fear if slight pressure is put on them. When Trump called Modiji- Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet (which came from the US), India Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had the habit of writing letters of surrender.' He also reiterated his attack on social media, X, stating, 'Trump's phone came, and PM Narendra Modi ji immediately surrendered. History is witness. This is the character of the BJP-RSS; they always budge. India had bifurcated Pakistan in 1971 despite the threat by the United States.' 'The 'babbar sher' and 'shernis' of Congress fight the Superpowers, they do not bow,' his post read. This was followed by attacks from BJP leaders. Senior BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said, 'Rahul Gandhi has proved again that he does not have the ability and maturity to handle a post like the Leader of the Opposition and has shown his lack of wisdom and low standards,' said Trivedi. Reacting to Rahul Gandhi's remark on the BJP-RSS, Trivedi said, 'This is the same BJP and the same organisation that has reduced the once-invincible Congress to irrelevance in many states.' The BJP MP went on to list what he termed a series of 'surrenders' by Congress governments over the years. 'You said on 15 July 2011 that terrorism cannot be controlled -- that was a surrender to terrorism. After the 26/11 attacks, your government did not permit military retaliation. That, too, was a surrender. In 1971, despite having 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in custody, Indira Gandhi's government failed to reclaim PoK. In 1948, Nehru took the Kashmir issue to the UN and surrendered half of it. At Independence, one-third of the country was surrendered to Jinnah and the Muslim League,' Trivedi stated. BJP MP Sambit Patra said that Rahul Gandhi's speech in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday does not befit any 'civilised politician or any leader of the opposition.' (ANI)
