Jaipur jail breach: Med referrals enabled hotel stays for inmates
Jaipur: A day after Jaipur police arrested 13 people — including four inmates of Jaipur Central Jail and five police personnel — in connection with a brazen criminal racket that allowed inmates to spend time in hotels under the guise of medical referrals, a primary probe hints at a key inmate suspected of orchestrating the operation. According to officials, the inmate forged close ties with jail staff and bribed them to procure fake medical referral slips from the prison doctor. These slips enabled prisoners to be temporarily released under the pretext of treatment at SMS Hospital. Once the referrals were secured, cooperative guards were allegedly assigned escort duty. Instead of the hospital, inmates were taken to hotels across the city to meet relatives or enjoy time outside prison. On Saturday, inmates Rafiq Bakri, Bhanwar Yadav, Ankit Bansal, and Karan Gupta were taken out citing medical reasons but were later found in two hotels. Rafiq and Bhanwar were at one hotel, while Ankit and Karan were tracked to Hotel Belacasa near Jaipur Airport. "We are examining the jail's internal processes related to medical referrals to determine where protocol was flouted and identify the officials involved," a senior police officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Manchester: If You Were Born Between 1940-1975 You Could Be Eligible For This Life Cover Reassured Get Quote Undo The hotel-prison racket has sparked a political storm, with former CM Ashok Gehlot accusing the BJP-led govt of failing to maintain law and order. "Rajasthan is seeing a surge in organised crime under BJP rule. Now convicts are walking out on fake medical slips to meet wives and girlfriends in hotels. This exposes deep rot in the system," Gehlot said, citing past incidents of assassination threats from jail.

Jaipur jail inmates met wives, partners in hotel while cops lounged outside; 5 constables suspended
When they received a tip off of a possible jail break, Jaipur Police were expecting some intense drama. What they didn't expect was the sight that met them – some policemen lounging about in a lobby of a city hotel, apparently standing guard as two jail inmates were meeting their spouses and partners in the rooms above. On Sunday, Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George suspended the five constables after they allegedly took bribes to allow four of five inmates who they had taken to the city's SMS Medical College and Hospital for medical examination to escape their custody and go gallivanting around the city. The inmates were facing grave charges that ranged from sexual assault to murder. While two of them, Rafiq Bakri and Bhanwar Lal, were eventually found in hotel rooms at the airport road, two others — Ankit and Karan — were found eating poha at a hotel booked by one of their girlfriends. The suspects were recaptured and produced before a magistrate Monday. Meanwhile, the constables — as well as four of the inmates' relatives who helped set up the jail break — were arrested in connection with the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Jaipur East) Tejaswini Gautam said in a press release Sunday. In the press note, the police said they received a tip about a possible prison break from SMS Hospital, where the four – along with yet another inmate – had been taken for a medical checkup. But at the hospital, the police allegedly found an empty police van and only one of the five inmates was still there. There were also no policemen in sight, the press release said, adding that the inmates were eventually tracked down. According to the police sources, the inmates would frequently make such visits under the guise of medical checkups and had paid some officials Rs 25,000 for the latest venture. The inmates, the sources said, were scheduled to return to the prison by 5.30 pm but missed that deadline. 'This has been going on for a long time but this is the first time it was caught,' one police officer told The Indian Express on the condition of anonymity, adding that investigation is underway to uncover the role of prison guards as well as doctors in the incident.
