Advocates Rajat Kalsan and others granted bail in case of assaulting cops in Hisar

1 2 Hisar: Three local lawyers arrested on the charges of assaulting police officers secured bail on Monday, prompting jubilant scenes at the local court and reigniting accusations of caste-based targeting in Haryana. The chief judicial magistrate of Hisar, Rajeev Kumar, approved the bail application of advocate Rajat Kalsan and co-accused Pravesh Mahipal and Deepak Saini, who were arrested following a July 30 altercation with police in Hisar's Old Auto Market area. Police alleged the trio had obstructed official duties and assaulted officers physically after being found drinking in a parked vehicle. It was written in the FIR (first-information report) filed at City police station, that Kalsan — already named in a separate case registered a day earlier — had allegedly refused to accept an official notice and, along with his companions, attacked the officers, injuring a sub-inspector. The accused were remanded in 14 days of judicial custody on Saturday, with bail granted after police filed their response to the defence application on Monday. Fellow lawyers distributed sweets within the Hisar court complex, hailing the decision as a "victory of constitutional rights". Meanwhile, the Hisar unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) submitted a memorandum addressed to the President to the deputy commissioner, calling the arrests of the three advocates and YouTuber Sanjay Chauhan "unconstitutional" and "politically motivated". The party alleged a broader pattern of systemic oppression against Dalits and other marginalised groups by the Haryana govt and police. No official comment has yet come from the state authorities regarding the BSP's claims.

John Abrahams Tehran to release on ZEE5 on August 14

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) 'Tehran", headlined by Bollywood star John Abraham, will stream on ZEE5 from August 14. Inspired by true events, 'Tehran" is written by Ritesh Shah and Ashish Prakash Verma, and marks the feature directorial debut of ad filmmaker Arun Gopalan. It also stars Manushi Chhillar, Neeru Bajwa and Madhurima Tuli. The film 'dives into the shadowy world of international espionage where one man's allegiance could tip the balance between loyalty and betrayal," according to a press release. The story draws inspiration from the 2012 bomb explosion near the Israeli Embassy in Delhi, a real-life incident that spiraled into complex diplomatic ripples. Amidst this, ACP Rajeev Kumar (Abraham) is pulled into a covert operation that spans continents, ideologies, and fractured alliances, the lines between right and wrong begin to blur. Abraham said he had one of the most intense and layered roles of his career in 'Tehran' ''Tehran' is a truly global film—rooted in real events but resonating far beyond borders. Playing ACP Rajeev Kumar in 'Tehran' has been one of the most intense and layered roles of my career as he is not your conventional patriot. He's a man constantly torn between duty and conscience, and that moral conflict is what makes this story so compelling," he said in the statement. 'This film isn't about good versus evil—it's about navigating the grey. I'm proud to be part of a project that dares to explore these complexities, and I can't wait for audiences to experience it this Independence Day on ZEE5. I am also thankful to ZEE5 for giving a global platform to this film because in all honesty, Tehran is India's first international film," he added. Gopalan called the film 'a mirror held up to a fractured world". ''Tehran', to me, is a mirror held up to a fractured world. A story about shifting loyalties, blurred identities, and the human cost hidden in the shadows of global politics. We approached it with honesty and restraint because the truth it draws from is far from fiction. 'Every decision these characters make carries weight; every silence, every betrayal leaves a mark. I'm thankful to John, Manushi, and the cast for stepping into this world with such courage and authenticity." 'Tehran" is a Maddock Films production in association with Bake My Cake Films. Besides Vijan, Shobhna Yadav and Sandeep Leyzell are also credited as producers on the film. Forest dept & villagers build fence to keep elephants out

Kozhikode: At a time when forest department and residents of many forest fringe villages across the state are at odds, department officers and villagers at Neikkuppa under south Wayanad forest division joined hands to build a 4.5km hanging fence to stop wild elephants from entering human habitats. Authorities proposed the participatory fencing initiative in an area that had seen severe elephant intrusions in recent months. They acted after realizing that the crash guard fencing project, already sanctioned by the state govt, would take months to complete. Work on a permanent fence was also halted due to the monsoon. South Wayanad divisional forest officer Ajith K Raman said that under the participatory initiative, forest department provided the fencing materials, battery and energizing unit while residents carried out the work by contributing labour. As there was no labour cost, the department completed the fencing with just the material cost of Rs 50,000. In the first phase, a 1.5km temporary fence was built from Kakkodan block to Manalvayal. Encouraged by its success, the project was extended in the second phase with another 1km of fencing from Manalvayal to Neikkuppa. Now, the third phase — a 2km stretch connecting Neikkuppa to Pathramoola — has also been completed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Residents of Manalvayal, Pathramoola, Chenchadi, Changalamoola, Neikkuppa and Kakkodan Block are expected to benefit from the fencing. Forest department and the local community will jointly maintain the temporary structure. Farmers and residents from Kakkodan Block, Neikkuppa and Pathramoola — areas badly affected by wildlife intrusion — took the lead in completing the fencing work with support from Neikkuppa Forest Protection Committee. Villages along this forest border have faced regular attacks by wild elephants, leading to the destruction of crops, vehicles and buildings. Over 40 farmers and residents took part in the effort. They were joined by Chedalath range officer MK Rajeev Kumar, deputy range officer A Nijeesh, staff from the Pulpally station and forest watchers.

A yr on, 310-bed Rims shelter home battles operational challenges

1 2 Ranchi: The shelter home (Vishram Sadan) of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), built to offer affordable accommodation to attendants and relatives of patients, is grappling with operational challenges. The facility was projected to benefit around 90,000 people annually. But only 62 beds on the first floor is on offer against the structure's capacity to accommodate 310 people. The Power Grid Corporation of India began constructing the ground-plus-five floors' structure with a basement on a 5,034sq mt plot in 2019 and handed it over to Rims in July last year. The land acquisition cost Rs 17.82 crore. A total of 217 people availed the facility in January, 184 in February, 261 in March, 244 in April, 218 in May, and 164 till June 18. The public relations officer (PRO) of Rims, Dr Rajeev Kumar, said, "The aim is to ensure dignified and affordable accommodation to the attendants, especially from rural and remote areas. The shelter home is being operated internally by Rims owing to the lack of effective management and delay in onboarding an external agency." Rims had floated a tender for hiring a private agency to manage the facility in January 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But the attempt failed as as those who applied did not meet the eligibility criteria. The hospital authorities reissued the expression of interest (EOI) last Monday, hoping to find a capable agency to take over operations. "Hospital authortities aim to ensure proper healthcare management. Hence, there is a need for a dedicated agency to run the accommodation properly," said a source. Accommodation is available at a subsidised cost of Rs 100 per day for families presenting an OPD or IPD slip, with payment accepted at any Rims cash counter. An amount of Rs 150 is charged per day from those staying beyond seven days. Dr Rajeev said, "Posters have been put up at multiple points of the hospital to generate awareness about the available accommodation among the patients and their family members." "We came from Simdega for my wife's treatment and had no idea that such a facility existed. We ended up paying over Rs 700 per day for a lodge nearby. If we had known earlier, we could have saved a lot," said Lakhiram Oraon, an attendant waiting outside the hospital ward. Rims would manage the shelter till an agency is finalised. One person has been assigned the task of a caretaker of the shelter home while a few take care of day-to-day maintenance, sources said.

Plant. Post. Repeat: As Van Mahotsav celebrations take root, Delhi-NCR turns tree planting into a ritual

Van Mahotsav or Forest Festival, which is celebrated every year in the first week of July, has found a strong footing in the Capital. Recently, at Bharat Mandapam, an exhibition was held on the same theme. But, the green festivities don't pause there since residents of NCR have taken up tree planting as a perennial ritual. Converting their weekend hobby into a social media moment, some are throwing seed bombs whereas others are indulging in tree journaling alongside being part of the usual plantation drives. Young Delhiites are making tree planting a year-round movement. 'It's more than just a green habit, it's a fun ritual that allows one to reconnect with Nature,' says Sanya Mitra, a second-year student of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), adding, 'For me and my friends, now tree planting has become another one of our regular outings. We love being amid the greens during the rains and making our contribution to our city. Recently we lost so many trees during the several windstorms, and that has added momentum to our cause.' 'There's something about planting in the rain that feels very fulfilling and magical. Our mission is to plant 100 crore trees across the country, and we have already planted over right lakh trees. The monsoon season really brings fresh energy to our work and multiplies the output great folds,' says Rajeev Kumar from the Think Good Foundation (087506 05092). 'Every weekend, we organise plantation drives in Greater Noida where nearly 50 volunteers from across NCR come together. Young, college students become a part along and some families arrive along with kids. We even see corporates showing up to bond outdoors, and everyone makes bombs using seed varieties like bamboo, babul, jangal jalebi, papri, and baken. We provide everything that's required and in turn the volunteers help plant saplings or even water and compost to the ones we've already planted. It's not just about planting trees but a full community experience.' The Think Good Foundation is on a mission to plant 100 crore trees across the country. But that's not all that Delhiites do, for most ask whether 'the tree they plant will be taken care of,' shares Dhirender Sharma, from Delhi Greens (9811330214), adding: 'That's exactly what we take pride in! We ensure no one has to worry. Once a tree is planted, our team follows up regularly to nurture and maintain it. If one wants to volunteer they can either become part of one of our drives or we also have the option for them to invite us to their office complex, or college, school etc where we can conduct one such drive. Anyone can reach out and join us in the initiative.' Delhi Greens ensures each tree planted is also looked after with regular maintenance drives. And if tree planting is the key word than Deepak Gaur (9313709050) aka Gurugram's Tree Man can't keep calm! Having given his mission a fresh social media twist, Deepak tells us: 'I wanted to add more to the usual plantation drives and create something that actually connects with today's generation, people who love photography and social media. That's how the concept of the Three P's was born: Plantation, Procurement, and Presentation. First, participants plant a tree and document the moment. Then comes Procurement, where they continue to document the tree's journey: watering it, caring for it, ensuring it grows. It's about long-term commitment and not a one-time photo opportunity. Finally, there's Presentation, where they are supposed to share deeper details like its age, location, and even possible threats like stray animals or human interference. I receive so many emails especially with young professionals and students who are trying to reconnect with Nature.' For more, follow HT City Delhi Junction
