NHAI's annual pass could reduce cost of travel on highways for private vehicles

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced an annual pass that will allow those using private vehicles to take 200 trips a year on national highways and expressways. By paying ₹3,000, one can make trips for one year or make 200 trips (whichever comes first) without the need to recharge. Virender Sambyal, Regional Officer, NHAI, Chennai, said that it would be applicable only to private cars, jeeps, and vans. 'At toll plazas on expressways, State Highways managed by State governments or local bodies, and parking lots and malls, the regular Fastag will continue to operate,' he said. 'The annual pass, which will come into force on August 15, can be activated only through the Rajmargyatra mobile app or on the NHAI website. It will be activated on the existing Fastag ID,' he said. Each time a vehicle crosses a toll plaza, it will be counted as one trip. For example, if a person takes a private vehicle from Chennai to Tiruchi, it will be counted as seven trips, as there are seven toll plazas on that stretch. A round trip would be counted as 14 trips. Under Fastag, a return trip to Tiruchi would cost ₹990 and 10 return trips would cost ₹9,900. With this annual pass, it would only take 140 trips and a potential saving of up to ₹6,900. Once the 200 trips are over, the users can recharge.

FASTag Annual Pass: 8 Key Questions Answered Ahead Of Its Launch

The FASTag annual pass will be launched next month on August 15. It was introduced by the Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, who claimed that it would benefit the users and provide hassle-free travel. The Annual Pass will be available only for private vehicles, such as cars, jeeps and vans, at designated National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas for one year or 200 trips (whichever comes first). There will be no per-trip charges. Here Are 8 Frequently Asked Questions Around FASTag Annual Pass Q1. Where to get the Annual Pass? The government said that the Annual Pass can be activated only on the Rajmargyatra mobile application and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) website. Q2. How will the Annual Pass be activated? The Annual Pass will be activated after verifying the eligibility of the vehicle and the associated FASTag. The user must make a payment of Rs3,000 for the base year 2025-26 through the Rajmargyatra mobile application or the NHAI website after verification. The pass will be activated on the registered FASTag normally within two hours. Q3. If I already have a FASTag, do I need to buy a new one for the Annual Pass? The government has said that the Annual Pass can be activated on your existing FASTag; there's no need to buy a new one. But make sure the FASTag is properly affixed on the vehicle's windshield, linked to a valid Vehicle Registration Number (VRN), not blacklisted. Q4. How long is the Annual Pass valid? The Annual Pass is valid for one year from the date of activation or 200 transactions (trips), whichever comes first. Once the Annual Pass completes either 200 trips or one year from the date of activation, it will automatically revert to a regular FASTag. The user can reactivate. Q5. Can an Annual Pass be transferred to another vehicle? No, the pass is non-transferable and is valid only for the vehicle on which the FASTag is affixed and registered. If a user uses it on another vehicle, it will be deactivated. Q6. Can I get an Annual Pass if my FASTag is registered using a chassis number? The Annual Pass can't be issued on FASTags registered only with a chassis number. The users need to update the VRN to activate the Annual Pass. Q7. What counts as a single trip under the Annual Pass? As per NHAI, for point-based fee plazas, each crossing of fee plaza counts as one trip. A round trip (to and fro) counts as two trips. Meanwhile, for closed tolling fee plazas, one pair of entry and exit counts as one trip. Q8. Is the Annual Pass mandatory, or what if a road user doesn't want to opt for the Annual Pass? The Annual Pass is not mandatory; the existing FASTag system will continue to operate as is. If users don't want to opt for the Annual Pass, they can continue to use their FASTag for regular transactions.

NHAI will tie up with Google Maps to chalk out routes with low toll charges

NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working with Google Maps to introduce a new feature in its Rajmargyatra mobile application, which will suggest different routes, including an alternative with lowest toll charges to the motorists. This service will be available from next month. Officials said that the highway users would be at liberty to choose a route to reach a destination as per their convenience to save travelling time or toll fee. 'There are two best possible routes to reach Agra from Delhi. One can take the Yamuna Expressway or National Highway 44 (Mathura Road). The app will inform users which route will attract a lower toll,' said officials. Google Maps provides live traffic data and real-time GPS navigation for driving, walking, cycling and public transport. It also suggests routes with estimated toll charges. Moreover, it offers options to avoid tolls entirely or prioritise routes based on the preferences of the user. The move is being seen as another strategic attempt by the NHAI to increase downloads and usage of the Rajmargyatra app. A dedicated link for activation and renewal of annual FASTag pass for non-commercial private vehicles will also be made available on the app next month. In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari last month announced the plan to launch a pass that will cost `3,000. It will be valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips, whichever is earlier.

Motorists will soon be able to know highway route attracting least toll amount. Here's how

NHAI's Rajmargyatra mobile app will show the best route to motorists, depending on the least toll from July 2025. (HT_PRINT) Check Offers The Rajmargyatra mobile application from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will inform the motorists about the route attracting the least amount of toll between two destinations. The application provides the motorists with comprehensive information about the national highways and also comes with a grievance redressal system. Speaking to news agency PTI, Amrit Singha, Chief Product Officer, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) of Indian Highways Management Company (IHMCL), said if there are three routes to travel to Lucknow from Delhi, the application will help the commuter choose the best one. Also, it will show which route commands the least amount of toll between these two destinations. "You can travel to Lucknow from Delhi via Yamuna Expressway, or travel by crossing Ghaziabad-Aligarh-Kanpur-Lucknow or app will inform motorists about the route which will attract the least amount of toll between Delhi and Lucknow," Singha reportedly said. He also said that two-wheelers and three-wheelers illegally enter the access-controlled Delhi-Gurgaon and Dwarka Expressway, citing the data compiled by NHAI's Advanced Traffic Management System(ATMS). As per the ATMS sample data, between June 21 and June 23, a total of 1.73 lakh violations were recorded, and more than one lakh of these were related to banned vehicles. Singha further said that NHAI is likely to open a 67-km-long spur connecting Bandikui to Jaipur via the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which will reduce travel time between these destinations. NHAI Rajasthan regional officer Pradeep Atri said that this new four-lane access-controlled Bandikui-Jaipur stretch, built at a cost of ₹ 1,368 crore, is expected to open for traffic trials by mid-July this year. This road was constructed in about 2.5 years and is expected to shift a major chunk of traffic from the old Delhi-Jaipur highway. Currently, it takes around four hours to drive from Delhi to Jaipur, 2.5 hours to reach Bandikui via the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and another 1.5 hours to cover the last 67 km. With the new spur, this journey could be completed in about three hours.
