The seven health benefits of a daily walk

'Ten thousand steps a day.' It has become almost a religious mantra for anyone embarking on walking as an exercise routine. But you don't need to adhere to this to feel the benefits of getting outside and stretching your legs. And this magic number has less scientific value than you'd think. It dates back to a Japanese marketing campaign from the 1960s designed to promote a commercial pedometer – and for some reason it has stuck, making us feel guilty for not hitting this made-up target ever since. Britain's leading walking charity, Ramblers, says the benefits of walking little and often are not to be sniffed at. 'Walking in the great outdoors is one of the most effective things we can do to improve our health and wellbeing,' says George Salmon, a spokesperson for the charity. 'Even a short stroll around your local park can make a drastic difference.' A growing body of scientific evidence supports this. If you're among the 60 per cent of people who suffer from back pain it might well be time to put your best foot forward. Walking for 30 minutes five times a week can help ward off back pain, according to a new study. The research found that people with lower back pain who took regular strolls remained pain-free for twice as long as those who did not follow a regular walking programme. And if that isn't enough to persuade you to rise from your deskright this moment and go for a stroll, then perhaps the following will spur you into action... Benefits of walking How far should you walk? Walking faster vs walking longer What to wear when walking Tips on getting started Staying motivated FAQs Seven health benefits of walking Walking can have the following benefits: 1. Burns calories It burns calories and contributes to weight loss – but just how many calories does walking burn? It all depends on your: Age Weight Height Gender Walking speed An average 180lb person roughly burns around 100 calories walking one mile at a brisk pace. Increase the pace to vigorous and that figure rises to 130 calories. By accelerating and decelerating the pace of your walking, you can burn even more. A study by engineering researchers at the Ohio State University discovered that mixing up the speed of your walking (which is natural when you're outdoors) can burn up to 20 per cent more calories compared to going at a steady pace (which would most likely be on a treadmill). 'Walking at any speed costs some energy, but when you're changing the speed, you're pressing the gas pedal, so to speak,' explained the study's lead author, Nidhi Seethapathi. 'Changing the kinetic energy of the person requires more work from the legs and that process certainly burns more energy.'

Griffin and Bosnjak goals win Munster Senior Cup for Cobh Ramblers

Munster Senior Cup final: Cobh Ramblers 2-0 Rockmount Cobh Ramblers excellent start to the season continued with a 2-0 victory over Rockmount in the Grandons Toyota Munster Senior Cup final at Turner's Cross. Mick McDermott and his players wrapped things up in the first half with Waterford native Shane Griffin and David Bosnjak hitting the back of the net. This is the club's eighth overall success and their third in four seasons, following victories in 2022 and 2023 over Cork City. Rockmount were out to lift the trophy for just the second time, and the sat back from kick-off as Cobh dominated possession. With that came chances, starting with a stunning Bosnjak shot that Oisin Barry pushed out for a corner. Cobh went on to take the lead in the 12th minute after the Rockmount goalkeeper parried the ball inside the box, and Griffin was in the right place head in. The Ramblers kept going, and this drive almost saw Cian Murphy turn in a James O'Leary cross for an own goal. Rockmount eventually broke and Ian Mylod's run was short lived as Cobh easily won the ball-back at the St Anne's End. The Ramblers got their second in the dying seconds of the half, with Bosnjak firing in after the Munster Senior League side struggled to deal with a corner. McDermott wanted more and that mean bringing on Barry Coffey, who did score but that was ruled out over an offside. Samuel Bellis also got into space after collecting a pass from John O'Donovan, and effort was blocked down by the Rockmount defence. The Munster Senior League side went for it late on, and an opportunity to pull a goal back was poked wide by Kieran Keneally at the back post in the 75th minute. The Ramblers responded by closing the game out by simply passing the ball around, something helped by substitute Jonas Hakkinen coming forward and boosting numbers in the middle of the park. COBH RAMBLERS: Timothy Martin; Nolan Evers, Brendeán Frahill, Cian Coleman (Jonas Hakkinen 66), John O'Donovan, Dale Holland (Barry Coffey HT), Jason Abbott, James O'Leary, David Bosnjak, Shane Griffin (Niall O'Keeffe 55), Samuel Bellis (Cian Murphy 75). Dundalk go four clear as Daryl Horgan runs the show in victory over Cobh Ramblers

Daryl Horgan claimed a goal and an assist as Dundalk defeated title rivals Cobh Ramblers 2-1 in the League of Ireland First Division at St Colman's Park. The Lilywhites knew a defeat would have put their Cork rivals on top, and first-half goals were the difference as Ciarán Kilduff's side gained a four point cushion at the summit. Dundalk wasted no time, with a Sean Keogh free-kick in the third minute hitting the near post Horgan also cut inside and got two shots off, and each one was stopped by Timothy Martin. The Ramblers soaked up the pressure and Cian Murphy created their first opening by holding the ball up and releasing Cian Bargary on the right wing. The Tipperary native dropped a cross between the Dundalk back-line and Enda Minogue had to awkwardly come off his line to deal with this. These moments were rare for Cobh, who won their first corner in the 32nd minute and saw this headed wide by Barry Coffey. Dundalk, on the other hand, were getting into space easier, and this showed with Horgan's opener. The winger dug an opening for himself on that occasion at the edge of the area and fired into the opposite corner in the 37th minute. The former Republic of Ireland international created Dundalk's second with a cross, and Gbemi Arubi nodded this in the dying seconds of the first half. Cobh regrouped over the break and went for it at the restart, and they pulled one back in the 54th minute. That came from Waterford's Shane Griffin curling in a free-kick at the Liam McMahon Stand after Dundalk were penalised for a jersey pull. The Ramblers kept going, but a frantic spell around the penalty area ended with nothing as this drive petered out. Dundalk held firm and Kilduff refreshened his team in the 61st minute by bringing on Dean Ebbe, Andy Paraschiv, and Eoin Kenny for Arubi, Harry Groome, and Keith Ward. This injected a new lease of life into their team, and out of this Vincent Leonard saw a close range shot hit the roof of the net. McDermott went for it late on by bringing on David Bosnjak, who has six goals this season between two different competitions. It came down to a Dale Holland attempt from distance, and Minogue stopped this on the goal-line. Cobh Ramblers: Timothy Martin; Jonas Hakkinen (Nolan Evers 59), Cian Coleman, Shane Griffin, Luka Le Bervet, Shane Griffin, Jason Abbott (Niall O'Keeffe 59), Cian Bargary (Dale Holland 30), Cian Bargary, Samuel Bellis (David Bosnjak 75), Cian Murphy. Dundalk: Enda Minogue; Sean Keogh, Vincent Leonard, Mayowa Animasahun, Conor O'Keeffe, Harry Groome (Andy Paraschiv 61), Keith Ward (Eoin Kenny 61), Aodh Dervin, Daryl Horgan, Leonardo Gaxha, Gbemi Arubi (Dean Ebbe 61). Elsewhere, Bray Wanderers kept pace with Dundalk with a 3-1 win at home to Athlone Town. Jamie Duggan opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a well-placed header while Conor Knight doubled his side's lead eight minutes later when he scored with a curling right footed shot that went in off the far post. Billy O'Neill's second-half goal made sure of the points before Kyle Robinson scored a late consolation goal for Athlone. Treaty United strolled to a 4-0 victory against UCD. Lee Devitt's first-half goal separated the sides at the break but the game turned on the 63rd minute when goalkeeper Niall Holohan was shown a red card and Treaty awarded a penalty for a foul in the box. Karl O'Sullivan converted from the penalty spot and from there on out Treaty took advantage of the extra-man with further goals from Devitt and Trpimir Vrljicak sealing the victory. In the First Division's other game of the evening, Kerry and Wexford played out a 1-1 draw. Niall Brookwell opened the scoring for Kerry before Mikie Rowe levelled things up in the second-half.

Corach Ramblers and Rosslare Rangers march on to Neil O'Sullivan Cup final

Corach Ramblers 'A' and Rosslare Rangers 'A' will go head to head in the decider of the Neil O'Sullivan Cup after coming through their semi-final clashes. Ramblers booked their place in the final with a 3-1 win over North End United 'B' at the Enniscorthy Astro on Thursday evening. Darryl Murphy fired the Danescastle side in front midway through the opening half and Cathal Cummins doubled their advantage in the 54th minute. John Tormey halved the deficit on the hour mark, but Gareth McCurtin grabbed the insurance goal for Ramblers with six minutes remaining. Division 2 side Rosslare Rangers fought back from the concession of a first-half goal to overcome Glynn Barntown 4-2 after extra-time. A superb Callum McDonald free-kick gave Glynn Barntown the advantage in the 27th minute, and it looked to be enough until Luke Homan grabbed a late equaliser to force extra-time. Robbie Byrne and Callum Farrell (two) netted in extra-time to send Denny Carthy's side through to the final, with Ruairí Ennis replying. Wexford FC Cup Gorey Rangers 'A', North End United 'A' and Bunclody AFC 'A' all booked their spots in the final four of the Wexford FC Cup with comfortable quarter-final wins on Sunday. Gorey Rangers hit Ajax Athletic for six goals without reply in Altura Credit Union Park. Philly Yeates fired the hosts in front early on and a Glen O'Brien double had them three goals to the good before the midway point of the opening half. Pádraig Wafer made it 4-0 in the 31st minute and Ethan Vickers added a brace after the interval. A Robbie Kane hat-trick helped North End to a 4-0 success against fellow Premier Division side Moyne Rangers 'A' in Hollygrove. ADVERTISEMENT Kane broke the deadlock before half-time and he added a second shortly after the change of ends. The prolific Eoin Rhodes then got in on the act to make it 3-0 and Kane completed his treble just past the hour mark. Top-flight outfit Bunclody ended the good run of Division 3A high-flyers Rosslare Strand by coming out on top 4-0 at Rosslare Community Centre. Luke Boxwell opened the scoring after seven minutes and Eoin Dunne got their second goal five minutes before the interval. Joe Finn made it 3-0 midway through the second-half and Boxwell wrapped up the victory with his second with 20 minutes remaining. Billy Browne Cup Blackwater FC and Rosslare Strand, who are battling it out for the Division 3A crown, will meet in the Billy Browne Cup final after the former beat Ferns United 'B' in their final four clash in Grove Park on Sunday. Aaron Moorehouse fired Ferns in front in the 26th minute, but Blackwater were back on level terms on the half-hour mark as Tomás Murphy hit the back of the net. Jake Nobbs put them ahead midway through the second-half and Darragh Byrne cemented their place in the final with their third goal in injury-time.
